A study of pulmonary embolism after abdominal surgery in patients undergoing prophylaxis

AIM： To determine risk factors for pulmonary embolism and estimate effects and benefits of prophylaxis. METHOdS： We included 78 patients who died subsequently to a pulmonary embolism after major abdominal surgery from 1985 to 2003. A first, retrospective analysis involved 41 patients who underwent elective surgery between 1985 and 1990 without receiving any prophylaxis. In the prospectively evaluated subgroup, 37 patients undergoing major surgery between 1991 and 2003 were enrolled： all of them had received a prophylaxis consisting in lowmolecular weight heparin, given subcutaneously at a dose of 2850 IU AXa/0.3 mL （body weight 〈 50 kg） or 5700 IU AXa/0.6 mL （body weight ≥ 50 kg）. RESULTS： A higher incidence of thromboembolism （43.9% and 46.34% in the two groups, respectively） was found in older patients （〉 60 years）. The incidence of pulmonary embolism after major abdominal surgery in patients who had received the prophylaxis was significantly lower compared to the subjects with the same condition who had not received any prophylaxis （P 〈 0.001, OR = 2.825; 95% CI, 1.811-4.408）. Furthermore, the incidence of pulmonary embolism after colorectal cancer surgery was significantly higher compared to incidence of pulmonary embolism after other abdominal surgical procedures. Finally, the incidence of pulmonary embolism after colorectal cancer surgery among the patients who had received the prophylaxis （11/4316, 0.26%） was significantly lower compared to subjects undergoing a surgical procedure for the same indication but without prophylaxis （10/1562, 0.64%）（P 〈 0.05, OR = 2.522; 95% Ct, 1.069-5.949）. CONCLUSION： Prophylaxis with low molecular weight heparin is highly recommended during the preoperative period in patients with diagnosis of colorectal cancer due to high risk of pulmonary embolism after elective surgery.

Pesticide-induced photoluminescence quenching of ultra-small Eu3+-activated phosphate and vanadate nanoparticles

The aim of this research was to investigate the luminescent behavior of ultra-small Eu3+-activated phosphate and vanadate nanoparticles in the presence of *** have an average diameter of approximately 2 nm with a narrow size *** monazite crystal structure of phosphate-based particles(space group P121/n1)and single tetragonal zircon-type structure of vanadate-based particles(space group of I41/amd)have been confirmed using X-ray diffraction *** synthesized Eu3+-activated colloidal nanoparticles show sharp emission peaks in the red spectral *** measurements revealed emission quenching upon addition of millimolar concentrations of following pesticides:4-Chloro-2-methyl-phenoxyacetic acid(MCPA),2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2,4-d)and N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine(Glyphosate).In both phosphate and vanadate-based colloidal nanoparticles luminescence quenching is more evident in the presence of 2,4-d pesticide with the lowest limit of detection(0.7μM)obtained for phosphate-based nanoparticles.

This paper presents a novel power supply system based on the use of fuzzy inference logic to improve the power control of renewable energy *** system comprises renewable solar and wind sources,and an accumulator battery is used as an additional power *** procedure for the parallel connection of multiple energy sources provides a stable power supply and optimal charging of the accumulative *** energy sources are connected in parallel using two serial converters and controlled by the controller based on the fuzzy *** reference voltage control of the serial converter enables an optimal use of available energy *** accumulative element is connected in parallel to compensate for the shortage of solar and wind energies,whereas if the available renewable energy exceeds the needs of the consumers,the surplus energy is accumulated in the *** measurements are conducted on the prototype of the hybrid power system under real conditions and compared with the applied systems of this *** novel system is mainly used in remote telecom locations where there is no power distribution network.

The temporal fluctuations and development of faecal microbiota in commercial layer flocks

The microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract influences gut health,which in turn strongly impacts the general health and productivity of laying *** is essential to characterise the composition and temporal development of the gut microbiota in healthy layers raised under different management systems,to understand the variations in typical healthy microbiota structure,so that deviations from this might be recognised and correlated with production and health issues when they *** present investigation aimed to study the temporal development and phylogenetic composition of the gut microbiota of four commercially raised layer flocks from hatch to end of the production ***-intrusive faecal sampling was undertaken as a proxy to represent the gut *** of 16S rRNA gene amplicons was used to characterise the *** diversity analysis indicated that each faecal microbiota was different across the four flocks and had subtly different temporal development *** these inter-flock differences,common patterns of microbiota development were *** and Proteobacteria were dominant at an early age in all *** microbiota developed gradually during the rearing phase;richness and diversity increased after 42 d of age and then underwent significant changes in composition after the shift to the production farms,with Bacteroidota becoming more dominant in older *** developing a more profound knowledge of normal microbiota development in layers,opportunities to harness the microbiota to aid in the management of layer gut health and productivity may be more clearly seen and realised.

Bioremediation perspective of historically contaminated sediment with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

The purpose of the current study is to compare the influence of different aerobic conditions(biostimulation(BS), bioaugmentation(BA), and a combination of biostimulation and bioaugmentation(BB))on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH) degradation and compare the degraded amount with single step XAd-4 extraction as a new tool for bioavailability assessment for chronically contaminated sediment samples obtained from territory of Autonomous Province Vojvodina of Serbia(S1, S2, and S3). A great number of papers dealing with biodegradation of PAHs in spiked sediment or soil have been published,but to the authors' knowledge, a limited number of papers studied aged, historically polluted sediment and a sum of chosen U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(USEPA) PAHs. A significant reduction(up to67%) in PAH concentration was observed, while the percentage of reduction varied depending on the sediment sample and treatment used. BS treatment successfully stimulated growth of indigenous bacteria. Further, PAH-degrading strain Sphingomonas paucimobilis F8 inoculated in BA and BB treatment survived for up to 7 weeks after it was suppressed by unfavorable conditions or native *** amounts generally showed good correlation with results obtained from XAd-4 *** obtained in the current study represent a good start for standardizing a XAd-4 extraction technique as a simplified, easier, and lower cost method for bioavailability assessment.

Color doppler sonography and angioscintigraphy in hepatic Hodgkin's lymphoma

AIM： To estimate the characteristics of Color doppler findings and the results of hepatic radionuclide angiography （HRA） in secondary Hodgkin＇s hepatic lymphoma. METHOdS： The research included patients with a diagnosis of Hodgkin＇s lymphoma with metastatic focal lesions in the liver and controls. Morphologic characteristics of focal liver lesions and hemodynamic parameters were examined by pulsed and Color doppler in the portal, hepatic and splenic veins were examined. Hepatic perfusion index （HPI） estimated by HRA was calculated. was observed. Lesions were mostly hypoechoic and mixed, solitary or multiple. Some of the patients presented with dilated splenic veins and hepatofugal blood flow. A pulse wave was registered in the centre and at the margins of lymphoma. The average velocity of the pulse wave was higher at the margins （P 〉 0.05）. A continuous venous wave was found only at the margins of lymphoma. There was no linear correlation between lymphoma size and velocity of pulse and continuous wave （r = 390, P 〈 0.01）. HPI was significantly lower in patients with lymphomas than in controls （P 〈 0.05）, pointing out increased arterial perfusion in comparison to portal perfusion. CONCLUSION： Color doppler ultrasonography is a sensitive method for the detection of neovascularization in Hodgkin＇s hepatic lymphoma and estimation of its intensity. Hepatic radionuclide angiography can additionally help in the assesment of vascularisation of liver lesions.

Mechanism of Chalcopyrite Leaching in Oxidative Sulphuric Acid Solution

The mechanism of the leaching process of chalcopyrite concentrate with sodium nitrate in sulphuric acid solution were studied and discussed. Chemical reactions of leaching and their thermodynamic probabilities are predicted based on the calculated Gibbs energies and analysis of E-pH diagrams. Experimental data, thermodynamic analysis, chemical, XRd, and SEM/EdX analyses of concentrate and the leach residues, were performed to develop a better understanding of the chemical reactions that took place in the system. Elemental sulphur was formed as the main leaching product, precipitated at the particle surfaces and tended to inhibit the leaching rate.

2d Images of Astrocytes in the Human Principal Olivary Nucleus: Monofractal Analysis of the Morphology

Introduction: Current knowledge postulated glia as active participants in various metabolic processes within nervous tissue. The most numerous glial cells were astrocytes, and qualitative analysis divided them into two types based on their anatomical locations: fibrous and protoplasmic. The main goal of this research was to examine the morphological difference between types, analyzing four features of the image. The secondary objective of this research was to explore their morphology through maturation and aging. Materials and Methods: The material originated from bilateral sections of the human principal olivary nucleus, without disorders in the central nervous system. The brains were taken from 30 human cadavers (35 - 90 years) and cut into samples corresponding to dimensions of the principal olivary nucleus. A light microscope digitized the histological preparations. The selection of 294 images was analyzed by monofractal parameters derived from the box-counting. These parameters quantified four image properties (size, shape, complexity and homogeneity) of the glial body or whole glial cell. Results: The first results showed that images of two types of astrocytes were significantly different (p d higher) in all properties of whole cells. The second results examined the differences between three age groups in both types of astrocytes. The differences between groups were more evident for protoplasmic than fibrous (nine vs. three parameters). Conclusions: The main limitation of this study lies in the fact that the quantification was performed only by fractal analysis techniques. Nevertheless, a detailed monofractal analysis of astrocytes was performed for the first time. Thus, although this study can be seen as an improvement of the previous qualitative results, future research will provide the complete procedure of the image analysis.

Kinetics of the Chlorination of Copper （I） Sulphide by Calcium Chloride in the Presence of Oxygen

The chemism of the chlorination of copper （I） sulphide by calcium chloride in the presence of oxygen has been determined based on the thermodynamic analysis in the Cu2S-CaCl2-O2 system as well as characterization of used raw materials and obtained products. The influence of temperature （from 473 to 773 K）, time （from 2 to 120 min）, oxygen flow （from 20 to 100 L/h） and calcium chloride quantity （from 5 to 40%） on the chlorination degree has been investigated. Kinetic analysis and the activation energy values of 20.89 kJ/mol showed that the chlorination of copper （I） sulphide by calcium chloride in the presence of oxygen is diffusion controlled.
