Organization：A new focus on mine safety improvement in a complex operational and business environment

The daily operations in the mining industry are still a significant source of risk with regard to occupational safety and health(OS & H). Various research studies and statistical data world-wide show that the number of serious injuries and fatalities still remains high despite substantial efforts the industry has put in recent years in decreasing those numbers. This paper argues that the next level of safety performance will have to consider a transition from coping solely with workplace dangers, to a more systemic model taking organizational risks in consideration. In this aspect, lessons learned from the nuclear industry may be useful, as organizational learning processes are believed to be more universal than the technologies in which they are used. With the notable exception of major accidents, organizational performance has not received all the attention it deserves. A key element for reaching the next level of performance is to include organizational factors in low level events analyses, and approach the management as a risk control system. These factors will then appear not only in the event analysis,but in supervision activities, audits, change management and the like. Many recent event analyses across various industries have shown that organizational factors play a key role in creating conditions for triggering major accidents(aviation, railway transportation, nuclear industry, oil exploitation, mining, etc.).In this paper, a perspective that may be used in supervisory activities, self-assessments and minor events investigations, is presented. When ingrained in an organizational culture, such perspective has the highest potential for continuous safety improvement.

Quadrilateral 2D linked-interpolation finite elements for micropolar continuum

Quadrilateral finite elements for linear micropolar continuum theory are developed using linked *** order to satisfy convergence criteria,the newly presented finite elements are modified using the Petrov-Galerkin method in which different interpolation is used for the test and trial *** elements are tested through four numerical examples consisting of a set of patch tests,a cantilever beam in pure bending and a stress concentration problem and compared with the analytical solution and quadrilateral micropolar finite elements with standard Lagrangian *** the higher-order patch test,the performance of the first-order element is significantly ***,since the problems analysed are already describable with quadratic polynomials,the enhancement due to linked interpolation for higher-order elements could not be *** the presented elements also faithfully reproduce the micropolar effects in the stress concentration analysis,but the enhancement here is negligible with respect to standard Lagrangian elements,since the higher-order polynomials in this example are not needed.

Search for possible exomoons with the FAST telescope

Our knowledge of the solar system encourages us to believe that we might expect exomoons to be present around some known exoplanets. With present hardware and existing optical astronomy methods, we do not expect to be able to find exomoons for at least 10 years, and even then, it will be a hard task to detect them. Using data from the Exoplanet Orbit Database（EOD） we find stars with Jovian exoplanets within 50 light years. Most of them will be fully accessible by the new radio telescope, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope（FAST）, under construction which is now in the test phase. We suggest radio astronomy based methods to search for possible exomoons around two exoplanets.

Mining tailing ponds are large infrastructure objects whose life cycle spans over several *** are indispensable for certain types of mines where technological process produces and rejects *** also have potential to generate risks for human life,property and *** that reason,it is essential to adequately manage them throughout all the stages of their life *** phase of their closure and abandonment is less studied and *** paper proposes a holistic resilience-based approach for analyzing this phase of their life *** proposed methodology is validated through a case study at an actual surface iron ore mine in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Three-way Subsynchronous Torsional Interactions Between LCC HVDC,MMC HVDC and a Thermal Generator

This paper performs a study on three-way subsynchronous torsional interactions(SSTI)between a hybrid dual-infeed high-voltage direct current(HVDC)system and a nuclear *** test case is based on the French IFA2000 line commutated converter(LCC)HVDC(2 GW)and the new Eleclink modular multilevel converter(MMC)HVDC(1 GW)interacting with the Gravelines generator(1 GW).The analysis is performed by the means of the eigenvalue stability assessment on an analytical model,while the accuracy of the conclusions is verified using the detailed non-linear electromegnetic transient program(EMTP)*** study shows that the dual-infeed system may introduce higher risk of the SSTI compared with the point-to-point HVDC *** shows that MMC operating as static synchronous compensator(STATCOM)may further reduce the torsional damping at 6.3 Hz *** conclusion may be unexpected since it is known fact from literature that STATCOM has a beneficial impact on the transient performance of *** studies show that in a sequential HVDC loading,it may be beneficial to load the MMC HVDC ***,the risk of the SSTI may be minimized by changing HVDC controller gains,in particular,by increasing phaselocked-loop(PLL)gains on the LCC rectifier.

The calculated results of thermodynamic properties in ternary Au-Ga-Sb system by general solution model were presented in this *** calculations were carried out in nine cross sections from all three corners in the temperature range of 973–1,573 K,and integral molar excess Gibbs energies,partial molar Gibbs energies,activity coefficients and activities for all components are *** activity of gold and gallium shows negative deviation from Rault＇s law for all investigated sections,while antimony activity is close to the line of ideal conditions and even coincides with the line for high content of antimony in the *** obtained by calculation were compared with those found in *** is concluded that compared values show reasonable good agreement.

Study of TiO_2 thin films on Si substrate by the photoacoustic elastic bending method

The quantitative photoacoustic investigation of different TiO2 thin films on Si substrates is presented using the elastic bending method. Photoacoustic signal amplitude and phase spectra versus modulation frequency were measured and analyzed using different sample thicknesses. Within the proposed method particular attention is given to the analysis of optical, thermal, elastic and structural sample parameters. Considerable focus is devoted to the fitting procedure of experimental results using the two-layer sample theoretical model. Characteristics of previously developed photoacoustic apparatus are discussed, attempting to search the ideal experimental conditions which can provide a good signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity.

Detailed electro-dynamic model of an ultra-fast disconnector including the failure mode

Ultra-fast disconnector(UFD)is a key component of hybrid DC circuit breakers and it is also studied as the main switch in some DC grid topologies.A UFD model suitable for DC grid studies and considering both normal operation and failure mode is *** dynamic motion of contacts is analysed in detail and it is concluded that Thomson coil inductances including parasitic parameters play an important role and it is recommended to use finite element *** arcing mode of UFD is repressed using a variable resistance in series with an ideal *** variable resistance is calculated analytically based on the instantaneous position of contacts and the circuit *** different arc models are recommended:for the air-insulated UFD and SF6 UFD,and in each case,two operating regimes should be considered:high and low *** UFD model is verified for both normal operation and failure mode using measurements on a 5 kV laboratory UFD and the results show very good *** 320 kV SF6 UFD model is evaluated using limited reported results from manufacturers.

Nitroglycerine effects on portal vein mechanics and oxidative stress in portal hypertension

AIM:Тo examine the effects of nitroglycerine on portal vein haemodynamics and oxidative stress in patients with portal ***:Thirty healthy controls and 39 patients with clinically verified portal hypertension and increasedvascular resistance participated in the *** di-ameters,portal diameters and portal flow velocities were recorded using color flow imaging/pulsed Doppler ***-section area,portal flow and index of vascular resistance were *** collected blood samples,superoxide anion radical (O 2-),hydrogen per-oxide (H 2 O 2),index of lipid peroxidation (measured as TBARS) and nitric oxide (NO) as a marker of endothelial response (measured as nitrite-NO 2-) were ***-dependent analysis was performed at basal state and in 10th and 15th min after nitroglycerine (sublingual 0.5 mg) ***:Oxidative stress parameters changed sig-nificantly during the study.H 2 O 2 decreased at the end of study,probably via O 2-mediated disassembling in Haber Weiss and Fenton reaction;O 2-increased signifi-cantly probably due to increased diameter and tension and decreased shear rate *** O 2-and H 2 O 2 degradation products,like hydroxyl radical,initi-ated lipid *** blood flow was to some extent lower in patients than in controls due to double paradoxes,flow velocity decreased,shear rate decreased significantly indicating non Newtonian char-acteristics of portal blood ***:This pilot study could be a starting point for further investigation and possible implemen-tation of some antioxidants in the treatment of portal hypertension.
