1985年在乔治亚州出现了因西红柿斑萎症tosp.virus病毒引起的烟草斑萎症。自1995年以来，因斑萎症造成的损失已超过了所有其他病害损失的总和。单株烟草的损失预计在25％到30％，更大的损失亦属常见。标准的化学防治（***和imidaclop.id）可减少40—50％的损失。虽然该控制水平效果显著，但经常仍显不足。进一步减少斑萎症的方法正在不断的探索之中。本文是对众多此类探索之一所作的总结。
