Phenotyping has become the rate-limiting step in using large-scale genomic data to understand and improve agricultural crops. Here, the Bellw.ther Phenotyping Platform for controlled-environment plant grow.h and automated multimodal phenotyping is described. The system has capacity for 1140 plants, w.ich pass daily through stations to record fluorescence, near-infrared, and visible images. Plant Computer Vision (PlantCV) w.s developed as open-source, hardw.re platform-independent softw.re for quantitative image analysis. In a 4-w.ek experiment, w.ld Setaria viridis and domesticated Setaria italica had fundamentally different temporal responses to w.ter availability. w.ile both lines produced similar levels of biomass under limited w.ter conditions, Setaria viridis maintained the same w.ter-use efficiency under w.ter replete conditions, w.ile Setaria italica shifted to less efficient grow.h. Overall, the Bellw.ther Phenotyping Platform and PlantCV softw.re detected significant effects of genotype and environment on height, biomass, w.ter-use efficiency, color, plant architecture, and tissue w.ter status traits. All -79 000 images acquired during the course of the experiment are publicly available.

There is evidence that a substantial part of genetic predisposition to prostate cancer (PCa) may be due to low.r penetrance genes w.ich are found by genome-w.de association studies. w. have recently conducted such a study and seven new.regions of the genome linked to PCa risk have been identified. Three of these loci contain candidate susceptibility genes: MSMB, LMTK2 and KLK2/3. The MSMB and KLK2/3 genes may be useful for PCa screening, and the LMTK2 gene might provide a potential therapeutic target. Together w.th results from other groups, there are now.23 germline genetic variants w.ich have been reported. These results have the potential to be developed into a genetic test. How.ver, w. consider that marketing of tests to the public is premature, as PCa risk can not be evaluated fully at this stage and the appropriate screening protocols need to be developed. Follow.up validation studies, as w.ll as studies to explore the psychological implications of genetic profile testing, w.ll be vital prior to roll out into healthcare.
