Clinical studies in COVID-related olfactory disorders:review of an institutional experience

Objective:To share a single institutional experience with clinical research on COVID-related olfactory dysfunction(OD).Data Source/Method:Narrative review of published original data and ongoing clinical trials on COVID-related OD at Washington University from 2020 to ***:There were three new diagnostic-/patient-reported outcome measures developed and *** report five clinical trials of interventions for COVID-related olfactory disorders:combined Visual-Olfactory Training(VOLT)with patient-preferred scents versus standard olfactory training(VOLT trial),oral gabapentin versus placebo(Gabapentin for the relief of Acquired Chemosensory Experience trial),nasal theophylline irrigations versus placebo(Smell Changes and Efficacy of Nasal Theophylline trial),stellate ganglion block(single-arm),and mindfulness-based stress reduction(MBSr)versus lifestyle intervention(MBSr trial).Conclusions:Initial intervention trials for COVID-related OD have shown potential for improving subjective and objective olfactory ***,there remains no gold standard treatment that definitively outperforms placebo in controlled ***,continued investigation of novel therapeutic strategies for COVID-related OD is necessary to maximize olfactory outcomes for affected patients.

利用多种实时观测资料和ErA5再分析资料,对造成2021年11月6—8日华北、东北极端暴雪过程多系统的结构特征及热动力机制进行分析。结果表明:此次过程先后由500 hPa高空横槽、河套西风槽及高空冷涡接力影响,其上空的高空急流不断加强并呈现“S”型弯曲,同时低空偏南风急流形成与加强,并在东北地区与高空急流耦合。此次过程阶段性特征明显,其影响系统的结构特征和水汽输送存在差异。回流冷锋形成的冷垫锋面较为浅薄,暖湿气流在其上倾斜上升。寒潮冷锋则较为陡立,上升气流随高度西倾。而锋面气旋结构较为深厚直立,使得气流呈垂直上升运动。随着斜压强迫的不断增强,850 hPa切变线由准东西向分布转为南北向分布,再演变为低涡切变结构。对应的水平涡度由弱转强,其上空正涡度垂直分布也逐渐加强,由弱倾斜上升运动逐步演变为较强垂直上升运动区,并在系统东侧形成次级环流下沉支。此次过程的发生发展与锋生作用密切相关,降雪落区和强度与锋区走向及锋生函数大小较为一致。假相当位温锋区在降雪3个阶段逐渐加强,垂直锋区和低层锋生函数由倾斜状态演变为近乎直立结构;湿位涡诊断表明,3个阶段降雪落区均发生在湿位涡正压项>0而斜压项<0配置的区域,条件性对称不稳定是此次过程的主要动力机制。

为揭示碳中和时期长江流域降水特征,利用CMIP6模式确定了碳中和时间并对比基准期研究了碳中和时期长江流域平均降水和极端降水变化,最后从大气环流的角度分析了其可能原因。结果表明:①SSP-2.6情景达到碳中和时间为2062年,与中国碳中和政策时间基本一致。②通过空间降尺度和偏差订正后,CMIP6模式可以很好地模拟基准期长江流域年平均降水。③与基准期相比,碳中和时期长江流域平均降水整体偏多,降水增幅北部>南侧,上游>下游和中游,春季>夏季>秋季>冬季,其中岷沱江和嘉陵江关键区是降水变化大值区,需重点防控。长江流域中游持续干旱日数偏少,北部极端大雨日数显著增多2.4~4.0 d,上游和下游极端大雨强度显著偏强。④环流分析发现,冬、春和秋季渤海异常反气旋南侧的东风异常和西北侧的东南风异常从中西太平洋带来的暖湿气流,以及夏季西南风异常从孟加拉湾带来的暖湿气流,使得长江流域降水增多。研究成果可为长江流域相关部门制定未来碳中和时期气候变化应对策略提供依据。

Zinc plays many essential roles in *** a strong Lewis acid that lacks redox activity under environ-mental and cellular conditions,the Zn2+cation is central in determining protein structure and catalytic function of nearly 10%of most eukaryotic *** specific functions of zinc have been elucidated at a molecular level in a number of plant proteins,wider issues abound with respect to the acquisition and distribution of zinc by *** important challenge is to understand how plants balance between Zn supply in soil and their own nutritional requirement for zinc,particularly where edaphic factors lead to a lack of bioavailable zinc or,conversely,an excess of zinc that bears a major risk of *** are the ultimate source of zinc in the human diet,and human Zn deficiency accounts for over 400000 deaths ***,we review the current understanding of zinc homeostasis in plants from the molecular and physiological *** provide an overview of approaches pursued so far in Zn biofortification of ***,we outline a"push-pull"model of zinc nutrition in plants as a simplifying *** summary,this review discusses avenues that can potentially deliver wider bene-fits for both plant and human Zn nutrition.

Synoptic-Scale Analysis on Development and Maintenance of the 19–21 July 2021 Extreme Heavy rainfall in Henan,Central China

In this paper,synoptic-scale analyses of frontogenesis,moisture budget,and tropospheric diabatic heating are performed to reveal the development and maintenance mechanisms for the extreme heavy rainfall in Henan Province of central China from 19 to 21 July 2021,based on station observations and the ECMWF reanalysis version 5(ErA5)*** results demonstrate that owing to the blocking effect of local topography,low-level wind convergence in Henan appeared underneath high-level divergence,conducive to development and maintenance of a midtropospheric low-pressure system saddled by the Asian continental high and the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH),during the extreme heavy *** the lower troposphere,frontogenesis occurred in the θ_(se) intensive region,as a result of the divergence and horizontal deformation(which play equally important roles),generating frontal secondary circulation with strong vertical motion favorable to heavy *** budget analysis reveals that 1)with the continuous strengthening of the easterly wind from the north side of Typhoon In-Fa(2106),strong wind shear and orographic uplift led to abnormally strong convergence of water vapor flux in the boundary layer in Henan;2)there occurred extremely strong net inflow of moisture in the boundary layer from the ***,both the apparent heat source and the moisture sink coincided with the area of heavy rainfall;vertically,however,Q_(1)exhibited a single peak with the heating center in the middle and upper troposphere,while large Q_(2)values evenly resided over 850–400 hPa;and Q_(1)(Q_(2))was dominated by vertical(horizontal)transport of potential temperature(moisture).These indicate that the latent heat release from condensation of initial heavy rainfall provided a positive feedback,leading to increasingly heavy *** these synoptic settings sustained the extreme rainfall process.

Additive manufacturing or three dimensional(3D)printing is a promising technique for producing complex geometries and high precision structures from various types of *** technique was particularly developed for polymer materials such as acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene(ABS)and found its way to different industries such as aerospace,automotive,electronics,medicine and ***,during service in outdoor environments,3D printed polymer structures are exposed to different environmental conditions such as UV radiation and moisture,causing a significant degradation in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the *** study offers a novel method to improve durability of 3D printed polymer structures against accelerated environmental conditions by deposition of a metallic thin film(***)on the structural *** specimens are 3D printed using fused deposition modeling(FDM)technique and metalized via DC magnetron *** characterization of durability of 3D printed ABS specimens in outdoor environments is carried out by monitoring flexural properties and microstructure of samples over the course of exposure in a controlled environmental chamber.

In this paper, we consider a new class CS＊s,b of generalized close-to-starlike functions, which is defined by means of the Srivastava-Attiya operator Js,b involving the Hurwitz-Lerch Zeta function φ（z, s, a）. Basic results such as inclusion relations, coefficient inequalities and other interesting properties of this class are investigated. relevant connections of some of the results presented here with those that were obtained in earlier investigations are pointed out briefly.

This paper discusses some previous, and presents some new experimental results on wave transmission over submerged breakwaters. The objective of this study is to evaluate wave transmission coefficient and develop a two-dimensional （2D） model as an improvement to the existing wave transmission coefficient models. Factors which affect wave transmission over stbmerged breakwaters are discussed through a series of laboratory experiments. Basic recommendations for evaluation and design of submerged rubble-monud breakwaters are presented. From the test results, a calculation formula of wave transmission coefficient is proposed.

Clinical effectiveness of palifermin in prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: a case–control study

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of palifermin, an N-terminal truncated version of endogenous keratinocyte growth factor, in the control of oral mucositis during antiblastic therapy. Twenty patients undergoing allogeneic stem-cell transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia were treated with palifermin, and compared to a control group with the same number of subjects and similar inclusion criteria. Statistical analysis were performed to compare the outcomes in the treatment vs. control groups. In the treatment group, we found a statistically significant reduction in the duration of parenteral nutrition （P=0.002）, duration of mucositis （P= 0.003） and the average grade of mucositis （P= 0.03）. The statistical analysis showed that the drug was able to decrease the severity of mucositis. These data, although preliminary, suggest that palifermin could be a valid therapeutic adjuvant to improve the quality of life of patients suffering： from leukaemia.
