In this work, we study the regional dependence of transport behavior of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris inside microflu- idic channel on applied fluid flow rate. The microalgae are treated as spherical naturally buoyant particles. Deviation from the normal diffusion or Brownian transport is characterized based on the scaling behavior of the mean square displacement （MsD） of the particle trajectories by resolving the displacements in the streamwise （flow） and perpendicular directions. The channel is divided into three different flow regions, namely center region of the channel and two near-wall boundaries and the particle motions are analyzed at different flow rates. We use the scaled Brownian motion to model the transitional characteristics in the scaling behavior of the MsDs. We find that there exist anisotropic anomalous transports in all the three flow regions with mixed sub-diffusive, normal and super-diffusive behavior in both longitudinal and transverse directions.

This study provides a framework of target costing to extend its original scope when the underlying distribution is non-normal. The new specification limits can be derived by listening to the market price from Taguchi loss function. Later, the new specification limits can be linked through the non-normality-based C^^pk value along with non-normality-based X^^-Rcontrol charts to derive goal control limits. Moreover, an example is provided to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed framework of target costing by relentlessly reducing cost and improving product quality to gain competitiveness in the marketplace.

In the metropolises,it is unlikely to use merely solar and wind energy to pursue zero carbon building ***,it would become possible if biofuel-driven trigeneration systems(BDTs)are *** is thus essential to assess the application opportunity of BDTs in a holistic *** this study,BDTs offered definite primary energy saving of up to 15%and carbon emissions reduction of at least 86%in different types of non-residential buildings as compared to the conventional *** 24/7 operation for the hotel and hospital buildings,the corresponding BDTs could even achieve zero carbon *** the BDTs primed with compression-ignition internal combustion engine were not economically viable even in running cost due to the high local biodiesel price *** BDTs primed with spark-ignition engine and fueled by biogas,however,would have economic merit when carbon price was considered for the conventional systems that fully utilize fossil *** of carbon tax and social cost could have the payback ceilings of 8 years and 2 years respectively for most of building ***,the results could reflect the application potential of BDTs for non-residential buildings,leading the pathway to carbon neutrality for sustainable sub-tropical cities.

AIM To test whether Nox1 plays a role in typhlitis induced by salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium(s. Tm) in a mouse *** Eight-week-old male wild-type(WT) and Nox1 knockout(KO) C57BL6/J(B6) mice were administered metronidazole water for 4 d to make them susceptible to s. Tm infection by the oral route. The mice were given plain water and administered with 4 different doses of s. Tm by oral gavage. The mice were followed for another 4 d. From the time of the metronidazole application, the mice were observed twice daily and weighed daily. The ileum, cecum and colon were removed for sampling at the fourth day post-inoculation. Portions of all three tissues were fixed for histology and placed in RNAlater for m RNA/c DNA preparation and quantitative real-time PCR. The contents of the cecum were recovered for estimation of s. Tm *** We found Nox1-knockout(Nox1-KO) mice were not more sensitive to s. Tm colonization and infection than WT B6 mice. This conclusion is based on the following observations:(1) s. Tm-infection induced similar weight loss in Nox1-KO mice compared to WT mice;(2) the same s. Tm CFU was recovered from the cecal content of Nox1-KO and WT mice regardless of the inoculation dose, except the lowest inoculation dose(2 × 106 CFU) for which the Nox1-KO had one-log lower CFU than WT mice;(3) there is no difference in cecal pathology between WT and Nox1-KO groups; and(4) there are no s. Tm infection-induced changes in gene expression levels(IL-1b, TNF-α, and Duox2) between WT and Nox1-KO groups. The Alpi gene expression was more suppressed by s. Tm treatment in WT than the Nox1-KO cecum. CONCLUsION Nox1 does not protect mice from s. Tm colonization. Nox1-KO provides a very minor protective effect against s. Tm infection. Using NOX1-specific inhibitors for colitis therapy should not increase risks in bacterial infection.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether interactive video game(IVG)training is an effective way to improve postural control outcomes and decrease the risk of falls.A convenience sample of 12 prefrail older adults were recruited and divided into two groups:intervention group performed IVG training for 40 minutes,twice per week,for a total of 16 *** control group received no intervention and continued their usual *** measures were centre of pressure(COP),mean velocity,sway area,and sway *** outcomes were Berg Balance scale,Timed Up and Go(TUG),Falls Efficacy scale International(FEs-I),and Activities-specific Balance Confidence(ABC).Assessment was conducted with preintervention(week zero)and postintervention(week eight).The intervention group showed significant improvement in mean velocity,sway area,Berg Balance scale,and TUG(psignificant improvement was observed for sway path(p=0:35),FEs-I(p=0:383),and ABC(p=0:283).This study showed that IVG training led to significant improvements in postural control but not for risk of falls.

Hardware-software Collaborative Techniques for Runtime Profiling and Phase Transition Detection

Dynamic optimization relies on runtime profile information to improve the performance of program execution. Traditional profiling techniques incur significant overhead and are not suitable for dynamic optimization. In this paper, a new profiling technique is proposed, that incorporates the strength of both software and hardware to achieve near-zero overhead profiling. The compiler passes profiling requests as a few bits of information in branch instructions to the hardware, and the processor executes profiling operations asynchronously in available free slots or on dedicated hardware. The compiler instrumentation of this technique is implemented using an Itanium research compiler. The result shows that the accurate block profiling incurs very little overhead to the user program in terms of the program scheduling cycles. For example, the average overhead is 0.6% for the sPECint95 benchmarks. The hardware support required for the new profiling is practical. The technique is extended to collect edge profiles for continuous phase transition detection. It is believed that the hardware-software collaborative scheme will enable many profile-driven dynamic optimizations for EPIC processors such as the Itanium processors.
