Predisposing factors’effects on mortality of oak (Quercus) and hickory (Carya) species in mature forests undergoing mesophication in Appalachian Ohio

Background:Mature oak(Quercus spp.)and hickory(Carya spp.)trees are gradually being replaced by more shadetolerant tree species across the eastern U.S.,likely due to fire suppression and increased *** and hickories are highly valuable to wildlife;therefore,studying their mortality patterns can provide information on the longevity of habitat quality for many animal *** mortality has most often been studied following large oak decline events,but background mortality rates in forests with aging oak and hickory canopies warrant equal attention,especially in the context of widespread oak and hickory regeneration ***:We studied background mortality rates of five oak and one hickory species over a 23–25 year time period(1993–1995 to 2018),using 821/20th hectare permanent plots on the Marietta Unit of the Wayne National Forest in southeastern *** calculated mortality rates based on remeasurement of individual trees for white oak(Quercus alba),chestnut oak(Quercus montana),northern red oak(Quercus rubra),black oak(Quercus velutina),scarlet oak(Quercus coccinea),and pignut hickory(Carya glabra).For each of these species other than scarlet oak,we also modeled the relationships of mortality probability with a priori topographic,soil,stand structural,and individual tree covariates,using a mixed-effects logistic regression ***:The species with the highest mortality rate was scarlet oak(61.3%),followed by northern red oak(41.4%),black oak(26.7%),pignut hickory(23.9%),white oak(23.4%),and chestnut oak(19.1%).In our models,northern red oak mortality was associated with more mesic slope positions,shallower solums,more acidic soils,and older stand *** hickory and chestnut oak mortality rates were associated with higher basal areas on the plot,while white oak mortality showed the opposite ***:Our data suggest that red oak subgenus trees in mature forests of our area will become increasingly uncommon relative t

We construct new fifth-order alternative WENO(A-WENO)schemes for the Euler equations of gas *** new scheme is based on a new adaptive diffusion centralupwind Rankine-Hugoniot(CURH)numerical *** CURH numerical fluxes have been recently proposed in[Garg et al.J Comput Phys 428,2021]in the context of secondorder semi-discrete finite-volume *** proposed adaptive diffusion CURH flux contains a smaller amount of numerical dissipation compared with the adaptive diffusion central numerical flux,which was also developed with the help of the discrete RankineHugoniot conditions and used in the fifth-order A-WENO scheme recently introduced in[Wang et *** J Sci Comput 42,2020].As in that work,we here use the fifth-order characteristic-wise WENO-Z interpolations to evaluate the fifth-order point values required by the numerical *** resulting one-and two-dimensional schemes are tested on a number of numerical examples,which clearly demonstrate that the new schemes outperform the existing fifth-order A-WENO schemes without compromising the robustness.

BACKGROUND Heel pain is a common orthopaedic complaint,and if left untreated can be a source of chronic *** diagnosis can be challenging,owing to the complex anatomy and multiple pain generators present in the *** aim to share our clinical experience managing an unusual case of chronic heel pain secondary to *** SUMMARY A 41-year-old obese male who works as a porter presented with a long-standing history of left plantar heel *** was assessed to have point tenderness over the plantar insertion of the calcaneus as well as a positive Silfverski?ld *** was treated for plantar fasciitis and tight gastrocnemius but failed conservative therapies as well as surgical *** resonance imaging revealed the presence of a pedunculated bony protrusion over the plantar aspect of the *** decision was made for excision of the osteochondroma,and the patient has been pain-free *** Osteochondromas are rarely symptomatic in skeletally mature *** most are benign with a very low risk of malignant transformation,surgical excision can yield excellent results and significant pain relief in symptomatic patients.

The idea of the global manufacturing virtual network (GMVN) was introduced in 2000 in order to highlight an emerging as well as an alternative manufacturing system which will have strong impacts on industry and implications to management theory. During the last three years, more than thirty companies - based in the electronics, bio-pharmaceuticals, garment, and home electronics appliance industries - have been studied in the UK and China. The research project addresses the emergence of the collaborative manufacturing phenomenon at three levels - sector, system and enabling technology. This paper summarises preliminary research findings from fieldwork conducted over the last three years. It seeks to clarify the characteristics and functionality of GMVN through the case studies and to contrast it to other types of business model, such as the multinational corporations (MNC) and international strategic alliances (ISAs). It also raises some new research questions and themes for further research into GMVN.

Notes on the variability of reflected inner core phases

Recent events beneath Central America have produced excellent sets of inner core reflection （PKiKP phase） at high frequency recorded by USArray ranging from 18° to 30°. However, the amplitude of this phase displays considerable scatter with a factor of six or more. Such scatter has been attributed to upper-mantle scattering and the Inner Core Boundary （ICB） in combination. Here, we show that neighboring events share upper-mantle scatterers beneath the receivers, and their ratio allows a clearer image of deep earth structure. Alter confirming some of the measured variation is indeed due to deep structure, we stacked nearby traces to reduce fine scale variations which are mostly due to shallow structure. Then, the remaining relatively large scale variation pattern of PKiKP phase is caused by the inner core boundary, as demonstrated by numerical experiments. After migration of data to the 1CB, we observe a consistent image. We find such a pattern can be explained by a patch of mushy material of a few kilometers high where the material changes gradually from that of the outer core to that of the inner core.

Source model of the 11th July 2004 Zhongba earthquake revealed from the joint inversion of InSAR and seismological data

We use interferometric synthetic aperture radar （InSAR） and broadband seismic waveform data to estimate a source model of the 11th July, 2004 M W 6.2 Zhongba earthquake, Tibet of China. This event occurred within the seismically active zone of southwestern Tibetan Plateau where the east-west extension of the upper crust is observed. Because of limitations in one pair of InSAR data available, there are trade-offs among centroid depth, rupture area and amount of slip. Available seismic data tightly constrain the focal mechanism and centroid depth of the earthquake but not the horizontal location. Together, two complementary data sets can be used to identify the actual fault plane, better constrain the slip model and event location. We first use regional seismic waveform to estimate point source mechanism, then InSAR data is used to obtain better location. Finally, a joint inversion of teleseismic P-waves and InSAR data is performed to obtain a distributed model. Our preferred point source mechanism indicates a seismic moment of ～2.2×10 18 N·m （～M W 6.2）, a fault plane solution of 171° （342 ° ）/42 ° （48 ° ）/-83 ° （-97 ° ）, corresponding to strike/dip/rake, and a depth of 11 km. The fault plane with strike of 171 ？ and dip of 42° is identified as the ruptured fault with the aid of InSAR data. The preferred source model features compact area of slips between depth of 5–11 km and 10 km along strike with maximum slip amplitude of about 1.5 m.

This study aims to investigate the rapid loss of numerical symmetry for problems with symmetrical initial conditions and boundary conditions when solved by the seventh and higher order nonlinear characteristic-wise weighted essentially non-oscillatory(WENO)finite difference *** the one-dimensional double rarefaction wave problem and the Sedov blast-wave problems,and the twodimensional Rayleigh-Taylor instability(RTI)problem as examples,we illustrate numerically that the sensitive interaction of the round-off error due to the numerical unstable explicit form of the local lower order smoothness indicators in the nonlinear weights definition,which are often given and used in the literature,and the nonlinearity of the WENO scheme are responsible for the rapid growth of asymmetry of an otherwise symmetric *** equivalent but compact and numerical stable compact form of the local lower order smoothness indicators is suggested for delaying the onset of and reducing the magnitude of the symmetry *** benefits of using the compact form of the local lower order smoothness indicators should also be applicable to non-symmetrical strongly non-linear problems in terms of improved numerical stability,reduced rounding errors and increased computational efficiency.

In endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD),the narrow gastrointestinal space can cause difficulty in surgical *** ablation apparatuses with high-power CO_(2) lasers or Nd:YAG lasers have been developed to facilitate endoscopic surgical *** studied the interaction of 808-nm laser light with a porcine stomach tissue,with the aim of developing a therapeutic medical device that can remove lesions at the gastrointestinal wall by irradiating a near-infrared laser light incorporated in an endoscopic *** perforation depths at the porcine fillet and the stomach tissues linearly increased in the range of 2–8mm in proportion to the laser energy density of 63.7–382 kJ/cm^(2).Despite the distinct structural and compositional di®erence,the variation of the perforation depth between the stomach and the fillet was not found at 808-nm wavelength in our *** further studied the laser–tissue interaction by changing the concentration of the methyl blue solution used conventionally as a submucosal fluidic cushion(SFC)in ESD *** temperature of the mucosal layer increased more rapidly at higher concentration of the methyl blue solution,because of enhanced light absorption at the SFC *** insertion of the SFC would protect the muscle layer from thermal *** confirmed that more effective laser treatment should be enabled by tuning the opto-thermal properties of the *** study can contribute to the optimization of the driving parameters for laser incision techniques as an alternative to conventional surgical interventions.
