Evaluation of coarse-grained CFD-DEM models with the validation of PEPT measurements

Computational Fluid Dynamics coupled with Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) is a commonly used numerical method to model gas-solid flow in fluidised beds and other multiphase systems. A significant limitation of CFD-DEM is the feasibility of the realistic simulation of large numbers of particles. Coarse-graining (CG) approaches, through which groups of multiple individual particles are represented by single, larger particles, can substantially reduce the total number of particles while maintaining similar system dynamics. As these three CG models have not previously been compared, there remains some debate, however, about the best practice in the application of CG in CFD-DEM simulations. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of three typical CG methods based on simulations of a bubbling fluidised bed. This is achieved through the use of a numerical validation framework, which makes full use of the high-resolution 3D positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) measurements to rigorously validate the outputs of CFD-DEM simulations conducted using various different coarse-graining models, and various different degrees of coarse-graining. The particle flow behaviours in terms of the particle occupancy field, velocity field, circulation time, and bubble size and velocity, are comprehensively analysed. It is shown that the CG simulation starts to fail when the size ratio between the bed chamber and the particles decreases to approximately 20. It is also observed, somewhat surprisingly, that the specific CG approach applied to interparticle contact parameters does not have a substantial effect on the simulation results for the bubbling bed simulations across a wide range of CG factors.

Overconfidence and the adoption of robo-advice:why overconfident investors drive the expansion of automated financial advice

Millions of people worldwide are affected by traumatic spinal cord injury,which usually results in permanent sensorimotor *** to the spinal cord leads to a series of detrimental events including ischaemia,haemorrhage and neuroinflammation,which over time result in further neural tissue ***,at chronic stages of traumatic spinal cord injury,the formation of a glial scar,cystic cavitation and the presence of numerous inhibitory molecules act as physical and chemical barriers to axonal *** is further hindered by a lack of intrinsic regrowth ability of adult neurons in the central nervous *** intracellular signalling molecule,cyclic adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate(cAMP),is known to play many important roles in the central nervous system,and elevating its levels as shown to improve axonal regeneration outcomes following traumatic spinal cord injury in animal ***,therapies directly targeting cAMP have not found their way into the clinic,as cAMP is ubiquitously present in all cell types and its manipulation may have additional deleterious effects.A downstream effector of cAMP,exchange protein directly activated by cAMP 2(Epac2),is mainly expressed in the adult central nervous system,and its activation has been shown to mediate the positive effects of cAMP on axonal guidance and ***,using ex vivo modelling of traumatic spinal cord injury,Epac2 activation was found to profoundly modulate the post-lesion environment,such as decreasing the activation of astrocytes and *** data with Epac2 activation also suggested functional improvement assessed by in vivo models of traumatic spinal cord ***,targeting Epac2 in traumatic spinal cord injury could represent a novel strategy in traumatic spinal cord injury repair,and future work is needed to fully establish its therapeutic potential.

Numerical Modelling of Seismic Site Effects Incorporating Non-linearity and Groundwater Level Changes

In the past decades, the necessity for detailed earthquake microzonation studies was recognized worldwide. Therefore, different approaches were established and applied. Unfortunately, the majority of these approaches are not based on pre-existing field data but require extensive seismic measurements and investigations. Furthermore, these approaches incorporate non-linearity inadequately and cannot take groundwater level changes into account. For this purpose, notably numerical models are most suitable. These models require a good knowledge of the local geological conditions （especially of the uppermost unconsolidated units）, information about the geotechnical parameters of these units, and a hydrogeological model of the investigated area. Most of this information can be obtained from geotechnical investigations and surveys that have already been carried out in most densely populated areas. In a case study for Bucharest City, non-linear analyses were performed using software that is based on the visco-hypoplastic constitutive law. The results indicate that groundwater level changes have an important influence on duration and amplitude of ground response and thus should be considered for seismic microzonation studies. This approach ean be used to display site effects and to identify different microzones taking different earthquake magnitudes and groundwater levels into account.

The Impact of a Bicuspid Aortic Valve on Aortic Geometry and Function in Patients with Aortic Coarctation:A Comprehensive CMR Study

Background:An isolated bicuspid aortic valve(BAV)is associated with structural and functional abnormalities of the aorta and the left ventricle(LV).Although~50%of patients with aortic coarctation(CoA)have a BAV,less is known about its impact on LV function and aortic geometry and function in CoA *** this cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging(CMR)study,we analysed markers of LV and aortic function as well as aortic geometry in a large cohort of CoA patients with a BAVand compared them with CoA patients with a tricuspid aortic valve(TAV).Methods:We included 48 patients with a BAV(18.4±9.3 years)and 45 patients with TAV(20.7±9.9 years).LV volumes,mass and ejection fraction as well as aortic distensibilty,pulse wave velocity(PWV)were measured from standard cine CMR and phase-contrast CMR images.2-dimensional CMR feature tracking(2DCMR-FT)was performed to measure longitudinal,circumferential and radial strain and strain rate of the *** arch geometry was classified as romanic,gothic and ***:LV volumes,mass and ejection fraction as well as aortic distensibility and PWV did not significantly differ between the BAV and the TAV *** was also no significant difference for LV global longitudinal,radial and circumferential strain and strain rate between both *** with a BAV had more commonly a gothic aortic arch compared to TAV patients,but this difference was not statistically significant(22 vs.14,p=0.2).Ascending and descending aortic distensibility correlated with LV mass in the entire patient group(p<0.001).Global longitudinal,circumferential and radial strain(GLS,GCS,GRS)and global longitudinal and circumferential strain rate(GLSR,GCSR)correlated with LV ejection fraction(p<0.001).Conclusion:Our data suggest that the presence of a BAV does not adversely impact LV and aortic function in children and young adults with *** correlation of global circumferential,longitudinal and radial strain values with LV ejection fraction dem

CFD–DEM simulation of fine particles in a spouted bed apparatus with a Wurster tube

In this work, a coupled computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) approach was employed to evaluate the spouting behavior of fine, cohesive powders in a cylindrical spouted bed with a conical base and equipped with a Wurster tube. The particle and gas dynamics inside the apparatus were simulated with 1.7 million spherical ZrO2 particles with a particle size of 100 μm. For an accurate prediction of the interactions of cohesive particles in the spouted bed, the adhesion forces according to JKR theory were included in the Hertz–Tsuji contact model. The surface energy of the particles was varied over a wide range to determine the effect of the adhesion on the spouting (the fountain shape and maximum height as well as the distribution of the concentrations and velocities of particles in different zones of the apparatus). A detailed analysis of the collision dynamics was conducted. The spouting behavior of a spouted bed with the same dimensions, particles, and processing parameters was recorded with a high-speed camera. The CFD–DEM simulations showed good agreement with the experimentally captured spouting behavior.

The ecological significance of fungi occurring asymptomatically inside living plant leaves is poorly *** the broad saprotrophic potential of many endophytic fungi,we hypothesized that they persist in decaying litter for an extended period of time after leaf *** assemblages were assessed by highthroughput sequencing in autumn leaves of beech(Fagus sylvatica)and in the corresponding leaf litter in 388 samples from 22 beech forest plots in three widely distant regions of Germany.A considerable proportion of the leafendophytic fungi was also found in 1-year-old ***occurrence networks revealed that the fungi formed unstructured assemblages inside the living leaves,rather than well-structured *** endophytic fungi constituted an integral part of the fungal litter community and were by far the most active fungi in 1-year-old *** therefore consider these endophytic occurrences to represent transient *** of the aboveground microbiome appears therefore to be closely connected to the process of litter *** the respective linked fungal habitat will facilitate predicting nutrient and carbon cycling and storage in forest ecosystems as well as elucidating the ecology of leaf microbiomes.

Superior labral anterior posterior lesions of the shoulder:Current diagnostic and therapeutic standards

Surgical treatment of superior labral anterior posterior(SLAP) lesion becomes more and more frequent which is the consequence of evolving progress in both,imaging and surgical technique as well as *** first classification of SLAP lesions was described in 1990, a subdivision in four types existed. The rising comprehension of pathology and pathophysiology in SLAP lesions contributed to increase the types in SLAP classification to ten. Concerning the causative mechanism of SLAP lesions, acute trauma has to be differed from chronic degeneration. Overhead athletes tend to develop a glenohumeral internal rotation deficit which forms the basis for two controversial discussed potential mechanisms of pathophysiology in SLAP lesions: Internal impingement and peel-back mechanism. Clinical examination often remains unspecific whereas soft tissue imaging such as direct or indirect magnetic resonance arthrography has technically improved and is regarded to be indispensable in detection of SLAP lesions. Concomitant pathologies as Bankart lesions, rotator cuff tears or perilabral cysts should be taken into consideration when planning a personalized therapeutic strategy. In addition, normal variants such as sublabral recess, sublabral hole, Buford complex and other less common variants have to be distinguished. The most frequent SLAP type Ⅱ needs a sophisticated approach when surgical teatment comes into consideration. While SLAP repair is considered to be the standard operative option, overhead athletes benefit from a biceps tenodesis because improved patient-reported satisfaction and higher rate of return to pre-injury level of sports has been reported.

Romanian legal management rules limit wood production in Norway spruce and beech forests

Background： The quantitative impact of forest management on forests＇ wood resource was evaluated for Picea and Fagus mixed forests. The effects on the productivity of tendering operations, thinnings and rotation length have seldom been directly quantified on landscape scale. Methods： Two sites of similar fertility but subject to contrasted forest management were studied with detailed inventories： one in Germany, the other in Romania, and compared with the respective national forest inventories. In Romania, regulations impose very long rotations, low thinnings and a period of no-cut before harvest. In contrast, tending and thinnings are frequent and intense in Germany. Harvests start much earlier and must avoid clear cutting but maintain a permanent forest cover with natural regeneration. While Germany has an average annual wood increment representative for Central Europe, Romania represents the average for Eastern Europe. Results： The lack of tending and thinning in the Romanian site resulted in twice as many trees per hectare as in the German site for the same age. The productivity in Romanian production forests was 20 % lower than in Germany despite a similar fertility. The results were supported by the data from the national forest inventory of each country, which confirmed that the same differential exists at country scale. Furthermore, provided the difference in rotation length, two crops are harvested in Germany when only one is harvested in Romania. The losses of production due to a lower level of management in Romania where estimated to reach 12.8 million m3.y-1 in regular mountain production forests, and to 15 million m3.y-1 if managed protection forest is included. Conclusions： The productivity of Picea and Fagus mountain forests in Romania is severely depressed by the lack of tending and thinning, by overly long rotations and the existence of a 25-years no-cut period prior to harvest. The average standing volume in Germany was 50 % lower than in Romania,
