Biocompatible custom ceria nanoparticles against reactive oxygen species resolve acute inflammatory reaction after intracerebral hemorrhage

Intracerebral hemorrhage （ICH） is a devastating subtype of stroke with a high mortality rate, for which there currently is no effective treatment. A perihematomal edema caused by an intense inflammatory reaction is more deleterious than the hematoma itself and can result in neurological deterioration and death. Ceria nanoparticles （CeNPs） are potent free radical scavengers with potential for biomedical applications. As oxidative stress plays a major role in post-ICH inflammation, we hypothesized that CeNPs might protect against ICH. To test this hypothesis, core CeNPs were synthesized using a modified reverse micelle method and covered with phospholipid-polyethylene glycol （PEG） to achieve biocompatibility. We investigated whether our custom-made biocompatible CeNPs have protective effects against ICH. The CeNPs reduced oxidative stress, hemin-induced cytotoxicity, and inflammation in vitro. In a rodent ICH model, intravenously administered CeNPs were mainly distributed in the hemorrhagic hemisphere, suggesting that they could diffuse through the damaged blood-brain barrier. Moreover, CeNPs attenuated microglia/macrophage recruitment around the hemorrhagic lesion and inflammatory protein expression. Finally, CeNP treatment reduced the brain edema by 68.4% as compared to the control. These results reveal the great potential of CeNPs as a novel therapeutic agent for patients with ICH.

3D volume extraction of cerebrovascular structure on brain magnetic resonance angiography data sets

The use of computers in facilitating their processing and analysis has become necessary with the increaseing size and number of medical images. In particular, computer algorithms for the delineation of anatomical structures and other regions of interest, which are called image segmentation, play a vital role in numerous biomedical imaging applications such as the quantification of tissue volumes, diagnosis, localization of pathology, study of anatomical structure, treatment planning, and computer-integrated surgery. In this paper, a 3D volume extraction algorithm was proposed for segmentation of cerebrovascular structure on brain MRA data sets. By using a priori knowledge of cerebrovascular structure, multiple seed voxels were automatically identified on the initially thresholded image. In the consideration of the preserved voxel connectivity—which is defined as 6-connectivity with joint faces, 18-connectivity with joint edges, and 26-connectivity with joint corners— the seed voxels were grown within the cerebrovascular structure area throughout 3D volume extraction process. This algorithm provided better segmentation results than other segmentation methods such as manual, and histogram thresholding approach. This 3D volume extraction algorithm is also applicable to segment the tree-like organ structures such as renal artery, coronary artery, and airway tree from the medical imaging modalities.

Hepatic vessel segmentation on contrast enhanced CT image sequence for liver transplantation planning

The structure and morphology of the hepatic vessels and their relationship between tumors and liver segments are major interests to surgeons for liver surgical planning. In case of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), the most important step in determining donor suitability is an accurate assessment of the liver volume available for transplantation. In addition, the mutual principles of the procedures include dissection in the appropriate anatomic plane without portal occlusion, minimization of blood loss, and avoidance of injury to the remaining liver. It is essential first step to identify and evaluate the major hepatic vascular structure for liver surgical planning. In this paper, the threshold was determined to segment the liver region automatically based on the distribution ratio of intensity value;and the hepatic vessels were extracted with mathematical morphology transformation, which called hit operation, that is slightly modified version of hit-and-miss operation on contrast enhanced CT image sequence. We identified the vein using the preserved voxel connectivity between two consecutive transverse image sequences, followed by resection into right lobe including right hepatic vein, middle hepatic vein branches andleft lobe including left hepatic vein. An automated hepatic vessel segmentation scheme is recommended for liver surgical planning such as tumor resection and transplantation. These vessel extraction method combined with liver region segmentation technique could be applicable to extract tree-like organ structures such as carotid, renal, coronary artery, and airway path from various medical imaging modalities.

Intracerebral hemorrhage （ICH）, caused by the sudden rupture of an artery within the brain, is a devastating subtype of stroke, which currently has no effective treatment. Intense inflammatory reactions that occur in the peri-hematomal area after ICH are more deleterious than the hematoma itself, resulting in subsequent brain edema and neurologic deterioration. Thus, we developed lipid-coated magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles doped with ceria nanoparticles （CeNPs）, abbreviated as LMCs, which have both potent anti-inflammatory therapeutic effects via scavenging reactive oxygen species and help in increasing the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging enhancement in the peri-hematomal area. LMCs consist of mesoporous silica nanopartide-supported lipid bilayers, which are loaded with large amounts of CeNPs for scavenging of reactive oxygen species, and iron oxide nanoparticles for magnetic resonance imaging contrast. LMCs loaded with CeNPs exhibited strong anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. In the rodent ICH model, intracerebraUy injected LMCs reached the peri-hematomal area and were engulfed by macrophages, which were clearly visualized by magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. Moreover, LMCs reduced inflammatory macrophage infiltration, and thus significantly reduced brain edema. Finally, LMC treatment markedly improved neurologic outcomes of the animals with ICH. Thus, LMC is the first nanobiomaterial that successfully showed theragnostic effects in ICH.

CuS is an encouraging photoelectrode candidate that meets the essential requirements for efficient solar-to-hydrogen production,but it has not been thoroughly studied.A CuS light absorber layer is grown by the self-assembly of copper and sulfur precursors on a carbon paper(CP)***,rGO is introduced as a buffer layer to control the optical and electrical properties of the *** well-ordered microstructural arrangement suppresses the recombination loss of electrons and holes owing to enhanced charge-carrier generation,separation,and *** potential reaching 10 mA cm^(-2)in 1.0 M KOH solution is significantly lowered to 0.87 V,and the photocurrent density at 1.23 V is 94.7 mA cm^(-2).The computational result reveals that the potential-determining step is sensitive to O^(*)stability;the lower stability of O^(*)in the thin layer of CuS/rGO decreases the free-energy gap between the initial and final states of the potential-determining step,resulting in a lowering of the onset *** faradaic efficiency for the photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution reaction in the optimized 2CuS/1rGO/CP photoanode is 98.60%,and the applied bias photon-to-current and the solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies are 11.2%and 15.7%,respectively,and its ultra-high performance is maintained for 250 *** record-breaking achievement indices may be a trigger for establishing a green hydrogen economy.

Sleep Posture Classification Using RGB and Thermal Cameras Based on Deep Learning Model

Sleep posture surveillance is crucial for patient comfort,yet current systems face difficulties in providing compre-hensive studies due to the obstruction caused by *** posture assessment remains challenging because of the complex nature of the human body and variations in sleep ***,this study introduces an innovative method utilizing RGB and thermal cameras for comprehensive posture classification,thereby enhancing the analysis of body position and *** method begins by capturing a dataset of sleep postures in the form of videos using RGB and thermal cameras,which depict six commonly adopted postures:supine,left log,right log,prone head,prone left,and prone *** study involves 10 participants under two conditions:with and without ***,the database is normalized into a video *** subsequent step entails training a fine-tuned,pretrained Visual Geometry Group(VGG16)and ResNet50 *** the third phase,the extracted features are utilized for *** fourth step of the proposed approach employs a serial fusion technique based on the normal distribution to merge the vectors derived from both the RGB and thermal ***,the fused vectors are passed to machine learning classifiers for final *** dataset,which includes human sleep postures used in this study’s experiments,achieved a 96.7%accuracy rate using the Quadratic Support Vector Machine(QSVM)without the ***,the Linear SVM,when utilized with a blanket,attained an accuracy of 96%.When normal distribution serial fusion was applied to the blanket features,it resulted in a remarkable average accuracy of 99%.
