Knowledge and Practice on Tuberculosis among Prison Workers from Seremban Prison

Background: Prisons are always overcrowded, and congestion leads to close relationships, and subsequently, increases the likelihood of airborne illnesses including Tuberculosis (TB). The purpose of this study was to identify the level of knowledge of TB transmission, and TB preventive practices of prison workers in a Malaysian prison. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with convenience sampling technique utilizing a validated questionnaire. 280 prison workers employed at the Seremban Prison were invited to participate in the study. The study period was from January 2019 to June 2019. Inclusion criteria included age above 18 years old and English literacy. The questionnaire was divided into 3 parts which were sociodemographic details, knowledge on TB transmission and TB preventive practices. The analysis was done in SPSS version 24.0 using appropriate statistical tests. Descriptive statistics was used to evaluate the knowledge level of TB transmission, and TB preventive practices of prison workers at Seremban prison. Results: Around 190 questionnaires were obtained usable registering a response rate of 68.5%. This study showed that around 66% of prison workers had moderate knowledge while around 26% had good knowledge of TB transmission. In terms of practice, around 93.7% of prison workers applied good TB prevention practice. Conclusion: This study showed that the majority of the respondents had moderate knowledge regarding TB transmission. However, their disease preventive practices were at acceptable levels which implied that existing prison standard operating procedures play an important on instilling these practices. Nonetheless, prison management should take important action by providing education and training to increase TB knowledge among prison workers to ensure that this practice is always upheld in both prison and community settings.

Synthesis, Characterization and Metal Ion Adsorption Studies on Novel Aromatic Poly(Azomethine Amide)s Containing Thiourea groups

A series of novel ladder-type poly(azomethine amide)s (PAMs) were prepared from new azomethine containing carboxylic acid monomer (TCA) with simple aromatic diamines and aromatic diamines with thiourea groups (TDAs) by means of phosphorylation polycondensation reaction. Molecular weights of the polyamides were evaluated viscometrically, and the inherent viscosities were in the range of 0.31 - 0.58 g/dl. These ladder-type polymers were not freely soluble in common organic solvents. Structure of monomers and polymers were confirmed using FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopic analysis. Removal of Cu2+ and Cd2+ from aqueous solutions by adsorption onto the polyamides was investigated. The effect of pH, initial metal ion concentrations and contact time were studied in batch experiments. The polyamides were found to be highly effective adsorbents for the removal of Cu2+ and Cd2+ metal ions from aqueous solutions. In a mixture of metal ions, the selectivity order was found to be Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cr(IV) > Cd(II).

Isolation of Multi-Drug Resistant Paenibacillus sp. from Fertile Soil： An Imminent Menace of Spreading Resistance

There are a good number of reports in the literature stating spread of resistance from normal soil flora to nosocomial microorganism through various ways. Similarly during the study of antimicrobial susceptibility pattern in the microflora, a multidrug resistant bacterium has been isolated from soil collected in Maharashtra state （India）. The bacterium exhibited a resistance to various classes of antibiotics namely glycopeptide, beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides and lincosomides. The bacterial strain showed its resemblance to the genus Paenibacillus. This constitutes the first report of its kind as to the multi-drug resistance trait in the genus Paenibacillus phenotype, especially in close phylogenetic neighbour of Paenibacillus daejeonensis. The resistance pattern displayed by this strain particularly highlights the possible presence of multiple resistant determinants in microflora of the soil rhizosphere. In view of the recent reports about the Paenibacillus spp. in clinical derived strains, such multi-drug resistance factors in this genus adds to menace of transmission of resistance to common soil originating pathogen. The data also supports the fact that the resistances to certain antibiotics need not always be due to exposure to particular antibiotic or similar substance.

Degradation of Bioplastics in Soil and Their Degradation Effects on Environmental Microorganisms

Degradation of three kinds of bioplastics and their effects on microbial biomass and microbial diversity in soil environment were analyzed. The degradation rate of bioplastic in soil was closely related to the main components in the bioplastics. Poly (butylene succinate)-starch (PBS-starch) and poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) were degraded by 1% to 7% after 28 days in a soil with an initial bacterial biomass of 1.4 × 109 cells/g-soil, however poly lactic acid (PLA) was not degraded in the soil after 28 days. When the powdered-bioplastics were examined for the degradation in the soil, PBS-starch also showed the highest degradability (24.4% degradation after 28 days), and the similar results were obtained in the case of long-term degradation experiment (2 years). To investigate the effect of bacterial biomass in soil on biodegradability of bioplastics, PBS-starch was buried in three kinds of soils differing in bacterial biomass (7.5 × 106, 7.5 × 107, and 7.5 × 108 cells/g-soil). The rate of bioplastic degradation was enhanced accompanied with an increase of the bacterial biomass in soil. 16S rDNA PCR-DggE analysis indicated that the bacterial diversity in the soil was not affected by the degradation of bioplastics. Moreover, the degradation of bioplastic did not affect the nitrogen circulation activity in the soil.

目的探讨肠内营养(EN)联合吉西他滨+顺铂(gP)方案化疗对Ⅳ期肺腺癌的临床疗效。方法将52例经病理组织细胞学检查确诊的Ⅳ期肺腺癌且采用gP方案化疗的患者随机分为研究组和对照组,每组26例。对照组依日常习惯进食,每日外周静脉用葡萄糖、20%脂肪乳、氨基酸等营养支持治疗。研究组在对照组治疗基础上,加用肠内营养素佳膳或肠内营养粉剂(TP)。分别观察两组患者的近期疗效、营养指标(血红蛋白、血清清蛋白)和临床指标。结果治疗后对照组患者部分缓解8例、稳定12例、恶化6例;研究组部分缓解9例,稳定13例、恶化4例,两组患者的近期疗效间差异无统计学意义(u=-0.512,P>0.05)。两组患者治疗前血红蛋白、血清清蛋白水平比较,差异均无统计学意义〔血红蛋白:(96±8)g/L和(98±7)g/L;血清清蛋白:(34±4)g/L和(35±4)g/L,P>0.05〕,而治疗后比较,差异均有统计学意义〔血红蛋白:(104±8)g/L和(109±7)g/L;血清清蛋白:(37±4)g/L和(38±3)g/L,P0.05)。结论肠内营养联合gP方案化疗是治疗Ⅳ期肺腺癌安全有效的方法,可改善肺腺癌化疗患者的营养状况,提高其化疗依从性,缩短住院时间。

Considering the importance of investigating the transit timing variations(TTVs)of transiting exoplanets,we present a follow-up study of HAT-P-12 *** include six new light curves observed between2011 and 2015 from three different observatories,in association with 25 light curves taken from the published *** sample of the data used thus covers a time span of~10.2 years with a large coverage of epochs(1160)for the transiting events of the exoplanet HAT-P-12 *** light curves are utilized to determine the orbital parameters and conduct an investigation of possible *** new linear ephemeris shows a large value of reducedχ^(2),i.e.X_(red)^(2)(23)=7.93,and the sinusoidal fitting using the prominent frequency coming from a periodogram shows a reducedχ^(2) around *** on these values and the corresponding O-C diagrams,we suspect the presence of a possible non-sinusoidal TTV in this planetary ***,we find that a scenario with an additional non-transiting exoplanet could explain this TTV with an even smaller reducedχ^(2) value of around 2.

Analysis of Trends of Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders in Patients with Systemic Essential Hypertension

Background: Studies have revealed a strong link between sleep-related breathing disorders and essential hypertension. However, the trends of sleep-disordered breathing in hypertensive patients have not been analyzed frequently. Methods: In this prospective, single-center and observational study, random patients with systemic essential hypertension, who were visiting gSVM Medical College, Kanpur, India between December 2012 and July 2014, were selected. After obtaining informed consent, patients were analyzed for symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Subsequently, all patients underwent overnight polysomnography to estimate the events of apnea and hypopnea. Observed data were compared between stage I and stage II hypertensive patients. Results: A total of 51 patients (age: 45.7 ± 13.43 years), comprising 36 stage I hypertensives and 15 stage II hypertensives, were enrolled in the study. About 47% of these patients displayed no symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing. Compared to stage I hypertensives, higher percentage of stage II hypertensives reported excessive day time sleepiness. Sleep latency time and sleep architecture were comparable between stage I and stage II hypertensives. Stage II hypertensives displayed shorter total sleep time and higher snore time than stage I hyper-tensives. Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) values increased with the severity of hypertension. Nocturnal oxygen desaturation was present in 25.0% and 53.3% of stage I and II hypertensives respectively. Mean lowest oxygen saturation was lower and the mean C-reactive protein levels were higher in stage II hypertensives as compared to stage I hypertensives. The mean C-reactive protein levels increased with increasing AHI scores, while the mean lowest oxygen saturation decreased with increasing AHI scores. 目的通过检测齐墩果酸(oleanolic acid,OA)干预后的A549细胞的凋亡和其内钙离子浓度,探索OA对A549细胞的作用及其可能的机制。方法体外培养人肺腺癌细胞系A549。设0、10、20、40μg/ml的OA浓度干预组。选择对数生长期的细胞,在不同浓度OA干预24 h,采用Annexin V/PI流式细胞术(flowcytometry,FCM)检测各实验组细胞的凋亡情况,测定细胞的荧光强度值并计算出细胞内钙离子浓度;以曲线拟合描述细胞凋亡率与钙离子荧光强度之间的相关性。结果FCM检测显示10、20、40μg/ml OA可诱导A549细胞凋亡,凋亡率呈现浓度-效应关系;20、40μg/ml OA干预24 h,A549细胞凋亡率明显增加,与0μg/ml组比较,差异有显著性(Pg/mlOA组干预24 h,各药物干预组A549细胞内钙离子荧光强度均明显高于0μg/ml组,荧光强度随OA浓度的提高呈现增加趋势,差异有显著统计学意义(P<0.01);曲线拟合显示细胞凋亡率和细胞内钙离子浓度之间有明显相关性(R=0.981,P<0.01)。结论OA具有浓度依赖地诱导人肺腺癌细胞凋亡的作用;OA诱导细胞凋亡可能与其导致细胞内钙超载有关。

目的借助于哮喘控制测试(ACT),论证使用吸入型糖皮质激素作为控制哮喘患者病情的临床疗效,与未使用任何药物控制哮喘症状或疾病发作的患者进行数据比较。方法在2012年7月,总共60名哮喘患者被要求做ACT问卷,其中32名患者作为对照组(n=32)未使用任何控制药物;28名患者作为观察组(n=28)使用吸入型糖皮质激素;并对两组的ACT结果进行了比较。结果所有患者都进行了ACT,并得到了相应的ACT分值。在对照组中,所有男性(n=13)患者的哮喘病情都控制不佳,19名女性中只有2名(10.53%)患者的病情得到了轻微的控制,其余的17名女性患者(89.47%)哮喘病情都控制不佳。在观察组中,男性患者(n=13)有6名(46.15%)患者哮喘病情未得到控制,女性患者(n=15)中,只有3名(20%)患者哮喘病情未得到控制。总体来说,ACT分值高于19的情况下,11名(39.29%)患者的哮喘得到了良好控制。结论使用吸入型糖皮质激素的哮喘控制物,例如倍氯米松和去炎松在维持哮喘的良好控制方面取得较好结果 ,ACT分值结果展示了这一点。使用吸入型糖皮质激素与未使用任何控制物相比,ACT分值得到了显著改变。
