The energy identity of mountainous areas:the example of Greece

Mountainous areas have been long recognized as particularly important for the planet and sustainable mountain development is a global priority. In order to improve the socioeconomic development perspectives of mountain societies, efficient and well-targeted energy strategies should be formed. An important step towards this direction is adequate understanding of local conditions and specific features that affect energy sector. This procedure allows the inclusion of "locality" in energy planning and so, decentralized energy production is facilitated. The present study attempts to determine the particular energy identity of mountainous areas. Greece, which is the second most mountainous country in the EU, has been selected as a case study. Essential features of the mountainous space have been selected, namely altitude, inclination, remoteness, lack of productive activities, old buildings/vernacular architecture, in order to explore their interrelation with the energy sector. Based on literature review and research findings the interaction between mountainous character and energy is outlined. Therefore, a framework of the characteristics of mountain energy identity is composed, which can provide support to the formation of specialized energy policy for mountainous areas. Some of the main findings of the present study include the significantly increased energy loads of mountainous areas, the abundance of renewable energy potential in high – altitude areas, the vulnerability of mountain societies to energy poverty and the difficulties in sitting energy projects in the restricted usable space of mountains. Since the literature regarding mountains and energy is rather poor the present paper aspires to be a step towards highlighting the importance of energy issues for mountain areas and societies. Pilot study on the effect of flavonoids on arterial stiffness and oxidative stress in chronic kidney disease

BAcKGROUND Flavonoids,the main class of polyphenols,exhibit antioxidant and antihypertensive *** To prospectively investigate the impact of flavonoids on arterial stiffness in patients with chronic kidney disease(cKD)stagesⅠ-Ⅳ.METHODS In this prospective,single-arm study,cKD patients with arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus were *** demographic,clinical,and laboratory variables were *** received daily treatment with a phenol-rich dietary supplement for 3 *** pressure,arterial stiffness(carotidfemoral pulse wave velocity,central pulse pressure),and oxidative stress markers(protein carbonyls,total phenolic compound,total antioxidant capacity)were measured at baseline and at study *** Sixteen patients(mean age:62.5 years,87.5%male)completed the *** intervention,peripheral systolic blood pressure decreased significantly by 14 mmHg(Pcarotid-femoral pulse wave velocity decreased from 8.9 m/s(baseline)to 8.2 m/s(study end)(Pcentral pulse pressure improved from 59 mmHg to 48 mmHg(P=0.003).Flavonoids also reduced oxidative stress markers including protein carbonyls(Pc compound(P=0.001),and total antioxidant capacity(P=0.013).cONcLUSION Flavonoid supplementation in cKD patients shows promise in improving blood pressure,arterial stiffness,and oxidative stress markers.

The Electricity Market Structure in Greece and the Paradox of Renewable Energy Sources

The European Union, in an effort to boost the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in power generation, applies supportive tools consisting in financial motivation either as grants or as subsidies. According to welfare economics, a subsidy should reflect the external benefits;otherwise a distortion of competition takes place. The most widespread method to calculate externalities is the avoided cost approach, despite the fact that it encounters equally all the RES units leading to technological neutrality. In the present article, the avoided cost approach with the objective social justification of RES subsidies/feed in tariffs (FITs) in the case of Greece, for the year 2014, is applied. The results show a high gap between the current FITs and the suggested ones amounting to approximately 40%. This uncomfortable outcome indicates that, at least in the case of Greece, either the level of the current guaranteed tariffs is not socially justified, or the cO2 value derived from the European carbon market does not reflect the real social cost, or that the avoided cost method, alone, is not adequate to explain the level of subsidies. In light of the foregoing, the need for the development of a concrete and integrated methodology for calculating all RES externalities emerges.

Thermal degradation characteristics and products obtained after pyrolysis of specific polymers found in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

Modem societies strongly support the recycling practices over simple waste accumulation due to environmental harm caused. In the framework of sustainable recycling of plastics from WEEE, pyrolysis is proposed here as a means of obtaining secondary value-added products. The aim of this study was to investigate the thermal degradation and the products obtained after pyrolysis of specific polymers found in the plastic part of WEEE, using thermogravimetric analysis and a pyrolizer equipped with a Gc/MS. Polymers studied include ABS, HIPS, Pc and a blend having a composition similar to that appearing in WEEE. It was found that, Pc shows greater heat endurance compared to the other polymers, whereas ABS depolymerizes in three-steps. The existence of several polymers in the blend results in synergistic effects which decrease the onset and final temperature of degradation. Moreover, the fragmentation occurred in the pyrolyzer, at certain temperatures, resulted in a great variety of compounds, depending on the polymer type, such as monomers, aromatic products, pnenoJlc compounds and hydrocarbons. The main conclusion from this investigation is that pyrolysis could be an effective method for the sustainable recycling of the plastic part of WEEE resulting in a mixture of chemicals with varying composition but being excellent to be used as fuel retrieved from secondary recycling sources.

A Unified Fractional-Step,Artificial compressibility and Pressure-Projection Formulation for Solving the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations

This paper introduces a unified concept and algorithm for the fractionalstep(FS),artificial compressibility(Ac)and pressure-projection(PP)methods for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes *** proposed FSAc-PP approach falls into the group of pseudo-time splitting high-resolution methods incorporating the characteristics-based(cB)Godunov-type treatment of convective terms with PP *** to the fact that the cB Godunov-type methods are applicable directly to the hyperbolic Ac formulation and not to the elliptical FS-PP(split)methods,thus the straightforward coupling of cB Godunov-type schemes with PP methods is not ***,the proposed FSAc-PP approach unifies the fully-explicit Ac and semi-implicit FS-PP methods of chorin including a PP step in the dual-time stepping procedure to a)overcome the numerical stiffness of the classical Ac approach at(very)low and moderate Reynolds numbers,b)incorporate the accuracy and convergence properties of cB Godunov-type schemes with PP methods,and c)further improve the stability and efficiency of the Ac method for steady and unsteady flow *** FSAc-PP method has also been coupled with a non-linear,full-multigrid and fullapproximation storage(FMG-FAS)technique to further increase the efficiency of the *** validating the proposed FSAc-PP method,computational examples are presented for benchmark *** overall results show that the unified FSAc-PP approach is an efficient algorithm for solving incompressible flow problems.

Biosorption and retention of orthophosphate onto ca(OH)_2-pretreated biomass of Phragmites sp.

The biosorption of phosphorus in the form of orthophosphate（Po） from wastewater using biomass as the sorbent is of potential importance because the Po-loaded biomass could be applied in the agricultural sector as fertilizer and soil conditioner. However, biomass generally displays a very low affinity for Posorption and therefore biomass surface modification is required. In the present study, the biomass（as model grinded leaves of Phragmites sp. were used）was pretreated with ca（OH）2to enhance Pobiosorption capacity（qe）. The results indicate that the alkaline pretreatment resulted in a modification of surface functional groups. It was concluded that the main sorption mechanisms were ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction. A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the pretreated biomass for Pouptake under various conditions. Isotherm and thermodynamic studies were also applied and analyzed. The biosorption process was best described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, which gave a qmaxof 12.27 mg P/g at 25°c and p H 7. The ca（OH）2treated Phragmites biomass applied in this study for Porecovery may present some potential advantages in terms of costs and environmental impact.

Knowledge of the interactions among atmospheric dynamics,dust emissions and climate system is essential to understand the physical mechanisms for the dust lifecycle,their role in loess formation as well as the predictions of future dust ***,these issues still remain relatively poorly known in central Asia(cA).The extensive loess deposits on the cA pediments provide a promising archive to explore atmospheric dust dynamics and climatic conditions in the past and their association with loess *** study investigates the granulometric and magnetic properties of a loess section(named Osh section)in the Fergana Valley,which provides a sensitive record of atmospheric dust dynamics since 30 ka based on radiometric(AMS ^(14)c)*** frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility(χfd)and the mean grain size are used to reconstruct the broadscale effective moisture and summer atmospheric dynamics pattern in cA,*** results show that the precession forcing exerts a huge influence on the wind-regime variabilities in cA,but with different physical processes under the impact of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheet(NHIS)before and after 15 *** origin of the sedimentation rate variations in the Osh loess is also linked to the NHIS-modulated changes of the atmospheric circulation *** the strengthened westerlies or the increased surface roughness from higher vegetation cover in loess-deposition areas have significantly accelerated the loess *** a result,these complicated influence factors of sedimentation rate change in the Osh loess section,especially during the Holocene epoch,may hamper accessibility of the authentic dust emission flux and atmospheric dust concentration in cA.

Large work function shift of organic semiconductors inducing enhanced interracial electron transfer in organic optoelectronics enabled by porphyrin aggregated nanostructures

We report on large work function shifts induced by the coverage of several organic semiconducting （OSc） films commonly used in organic light emitting diodes （OLEDs） and organic photovoltaics （OPVs） with a porphyrin aggregated layer. The insertion between the organic film and the aluminum cathode of an aggregated layer based on the meso-tetrakis（1-methylpyridinium-4-yl） porphyrin chloride （porphyrin 1）, with its molecules adopting a face-to-face orientation parallel to the organic substrate, results in a significant shift of the OSc work function towards lower values due to the formation of a large interfacial dipole and induces large enhancement of either the OLED or OPV device efficiency. OLEDs based on poly[（9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl）-co-（1,4-benzo-2,1＇,3-thiadiazole）J （F8BT） and incorporating the porphyrin 1 at the cathode interface exhibited current efficiency values up to 13.8 cd/A, an almost three-fold improvement over the efficiency of 4.5 cd/A of the reference device. Accordingly, OPVs based on poly（3- hexylthiophene）（P3HT）, [6,6]-phenyl-c61 butyric acid methyl ester （Pc61BM） and porphyrin 1 increased their external quantum efficiencies to 4.4% relative to 2.7% for the reference device without the porphyrin layer. The incorporation of a layer based on the zinc meso-tetrakis （1-methylpyridinium-4-yl）porphyrin chloride （porphyrin 2）, with its molecules adopting an edge-to-edge orientation, also introduced improvements, albeit more modest in all cases, highlighting the impact of molecular orientation.

Software-oriented approaches for teaching computer architecture to computer science students

This paper describes a combination of approaches to provoke deeper comprehension in various topics in computer architecture details to computer science students. It also presents the outcome of this effort. The proposed educational approaches apply to a sequence of two courses on computer architecture and organization. The first course explains basic notions of execution on a processor, as well as hardware details. The tools used are simulation, assembly language and c programming. The second course deals with more advanced matters of computer organization. There, the authors introduced building a simple Linux device driver as a new approach for getting hands-on experience, on issues related to interactions of the operating system kernel with the memory, I/O, peripherals, and bus system components.

Five soil samples collected from shooting ranges in 1998 were stored under a closed condition for 5 *** addition to SEM and XRD investigations,the total organic carbon content(TOc),inorganic carbon content(TIc),δc andδ0 of carbonates andδc of plant remains were *** concentrations of total carbon contents,the sum of TOc and TIc,remained the same within the 5 years storage,whereas the TOc and TIc contents decreased and increased,*** TIc increase is associated with a decreased TOc,suggesting a conversion of organic carbon into inorganic *** a conversion is evidenced by the presence of primary lead carbonates and carbon isotopic composition of lead carbonates. It can be concluded that soil organic matters play an important role in the process of bullets weathering and controls migration of the elevated lead in the soil.
