Energy poverty in the mountainous town of Metsovo,Greece

In an attempt to enhance knowledge on the energy poverty phenomenon in mountainous areas,a primary social survey was conducted in a typical mountainous town of Greece,Metsovo in the Region of *** survey recorded quantitative data of energy expenses and incomes of households and it also captured qualitative indicators related to energy *** findings showed that nine out of ten households in Metsovo are exposed to energy poverty,based on the objective 10%*** subjective indicators revealed other interesting aspects of the *** one-third of the local population live in houses that are inadequately heated and/or present damp *** two-thirds of the local population have been forced to restrict other basic needs,in order to respond to high energy *** the relationships between variables of the survey also revealed some notable *** inadequately heated present statistical significant correlation with the heating system *** inadequately heated houses are also correlated with houses that presented damp-mould problems,as well as households that report arrears in energy ***,reduction in hours of heating system operation is correlated with health *** energy policy in Greece does not include specific strategies for mountainous areas,apart from some differentiations in heating oil *** great extent of energy poverty in mountainous Greece,highlighted by the present representative(with respect to mountainous Greece)study,may have irreversible social ***,a need for specific and effective action is necessary,whose main axes should be an extensive upgrade of buildings’energy efficiency in mountainous settlements and special fuel tariffs for mountainous areas.

Protection of architectural heritage: attitudes of local residents and visitors in Sirako, Greece

Architectural heritage comprises one o the most important elements of mountain settlements in Greece. It holds high cultural value, represents the tangible continuation of the past and forms the unique character and identity of each mountain region. Yet, controversy regarding funding for its preservation often arises. In this paper, we used two Contingent Valuation surveys to estimate the socia benefit deriving from protecting the traditiona architecture in the mountainous village of Sirako and through it, to examine perceptions and attitudes o local residents and visitors. Research findings revealed a strong social will in favor of the good's protection followed by high percentages of positive willingness to pay(WTP). However, WTP is significantly higher among residents. Cultura heritage value, of the good, appears to prevail, along with the environmental one. However, both residents and visitors pointed out that local heritage, if wellpreserved, will boost tourism development. Residents appeared to better recognize the true level o architectural decay, expressed higher apprehension for its protection and were willing to pay higher amount of money. Tourists, on the other side expressed high satisfaction for their visit, appreciated the beauty and serenity emerging from local built and natural environment and spent several days visiting the surrounding area. The longer they stayed and gotfamiliar with the village, the more willing they were to contribute to local heritage's protection. Percentages reflecting indifference for protecting architecture were extremely low. Yet, they were higher among tourists. Traditional architecture is considered as public good; an opinion resulting in an important percentage of visitors stating that national government should provide the necessary funding. Energy poverty in Greek mountainous areas： a comparative study

The paper studied the energy poverty in the mountainous areas of Greece through parallel primary surveys, in comparison with the country-level conditions. The surveys are based on objective financial and expenditure data as well as on subjective views about housing conditions. The objective approach showed that mountainous areas of Greece are burdened with much higher energy expenditure while also having lower annual incomes. Under these circumstances, the energy poverty rate skyrocketed to73.5%. The subjective indicators reveal significant aspects of the problem, such as the intense problem of damp walls and mold growth at home or the restriction of other basic needs in order to cover heating needs. However, despite the proven high vulnerability of Greek mountainous areas, current energy policy actually ignores the special features of mountainous areas, implementing horizontal ***, a specialized energy plan targeted to alleviating energy poverty in mountainous areas in Greece is an urgent imperative.

Medical transportation and the contribution of air medical evacuation in isolated mountainous areas of Greece-Case study,Municipality of Agrafa

In every emergency medical situation,access to emergency medical services is an inalienable right of any *** average acceptable time to provide first aid assistance is 60 *** this paper,the possibility of using helicopters for air travel in mountainous areas was examined for the first time for all of Greece and especially for a mountainous and isolated area such as the Municipality of ***,the time distance-virtual distance,from the hospitals was calculated at the national level of Greece,with an acceptable first contact time of 60 minutes(golden hour),i.e.,less than two hours from the nearest hospital to the incident and back to the hospital and the relevant conclusions are ***,the case study of Municipality of Agrafa,one of the most mountainous areas in Greece,was *** time distance of the settlements from the nearest primary health point,namely the Primary Health Centre(PHC)of West Fragkista,was calculated and the transportation by ground means was compared with the corresponding time by flying means,to investigate the contribution of air transportation or not,of the timely arrival of the patients in the appropriate health ***,possible helicopter landing locations were identified,using a geographic information system to facilitate the process of air medical transportation in the Municipality of Agrafa.

A Unified Fractional-Step,Artificial Compressibility and Pressure-Projection Formulation for Solving the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations

This paper introduces a unified concept and algorithm for the fractionalstep(FS),artificial compressibility(AC)and pressure-projection(PP)methods for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes *** proposed FSAC-PP approach falls into the group of pseudo-time splitting high-resolution methods incorporating the characteristics-based(CB)Godunov-type treatment of convective terms with PP *** to the fact that the CB Godunov-type methods are applicable directly to the hyperbolic AC formulation and not to the elliptical FS-PP(split)methods,thus the straightforward coupling of CB Godunov-type schemes with PP methods is not ***,the proposed FSAC-PP approach unifies the fully-explicit AC and semi-implicit FS-PP methods of Chorin including a PP step in the dual-time stepping procedure to a)overcome the numerical stiffness of the classical AC approach at(very)low and moderate Reynolds numbers,b)incorporate the accuracy and convergence properties of CB Godunov-type schemes with PP methods,and c)further improve the stability and efficiency of the AC method for steady and unsteady flow *** FSAC-PP method has also been coupled with a non-linear,full-multigrid and fullapproximation storage(FMG-FAS)technique to further increase the efficiency of the *** validating the proposed FSAC-PP method,computational examples are presented for benchmark *** overall results show that the unified FSAC-PP approach is an efficient algorithm for solving incompressible flow problems.

On the estimation of ship’s fuel consumption and speed curve:A statistical approach

When fuel efficiency is at stake,along with the reduction of the environmental foot print of air pollution,a need is presented to estimate a ship’s fuel consumption for a forthcoming voyage,and means for decision making and for cost *** paper suggests an operational approach for obtaining an accurate fuel consumption and speed curve,on the basis of major factors affecting it,namely,ship’s draft and displacement,weather force and direction,hull and propeller roughness.A statistical analysis on 418 noon reports of a Pure Car and Truck Carrier case ship is carried out and the influence of the above factors is *** expected,stronger wind and head weather increases the fuel consumption,and the difference between several weather conditions could be quantified.A simple and accurate algorithm is proposed in order for ship owners,managers and operators to be in a position to apply the suggested method on their ***,applications of the structured algorithm are introduced with examples,in estimating the fuel consumption of the case ship for a future voyage,and also the same for a sister ***,voyage planning in several scenarios is proposed in order to assist the stakeholders with decision making aimed to fuel saving and environmental friendliness of their ships.

A physical interpretation of the Titius-Bode rule and its connection to the closed orbits of Bertrand's theorem

We consider the geometric Titius-Bode rule for the semimajor axes of planetary orbits. We derive an equivalent rule for the midpoints of the segments between consecutive orbits along the radial direction and we interpret it physically in terms of the work done in the gravitational field of the Sun by particles whose orbits are perturbed around each planetary orbit. On such energetic grounds, it is not surprising that some exoplanets in multiple-planet extrasolar systems obey the same relation. However,it is surprising that this simple interpretation of the Titius-Bode rule also reveals new properties of the bound closed orbits predicted by Bertrand’s theorem, which has been known since 1873.

Neuroinformatics is a fascinating research field that applies computational models and analytical tools to high dimensional experimental neuroscience data for a better understanding of how the brain functions or dysfunctions in brain diseases. Neuroinformaticians work in the intersection of neuroscience and informatics supporting the integration of various sub-disciplines（behavioural neuroscience, genetics, cognitive psychology, etc.） working on brain research. Neuroinformaticians are the pathway of information exchange between informaticians and clinicians for a better understanding of the outcome of computational models and the clinical interpretation of the analysis. Machine learning is one of the most significant computational developments in the last decade giving tools to neuroinformaticians and finally to radiologists and clinicians for an automatic and early diagnosis-prognosis of a brain disease. Random forest（RF） algorithm has been successfully applied to high-dimensional neuroimaging data for feature reduction and also has been applied to classify the clinical label of a subject using single or multi-modal neuroimaging datasets. Our aim was to review the studies where RF was applied to correctly predict the Alzheimer＇s disease（AD）, the conversion from mild cognitive impairment（MCI） and its robustness to overfitting, outliers and handling of non-linear data. Finally, we described our RF-based model that gave us the 1 ^（st） position in an international challenge for automated prediction of MCI from MRI data.

A FAST LAGRANGIAN SIMULATION METHOD FOR FLOW ANALYSIS AND RUNNER DESIGN IN PELTON TURBINES

In the present work, an alternative numerical methodology is developed for a fast and effective simulation and analysis of the complex flow and energy conversion in Pelton impulse hydro turbines. The algorithm is based on the Lagrangian approach and the unsteady free-surface flow during the jet-bucket interaction is simulated by tracking the trajectories of representative fluid particles at very low computer cost. Modern regression tools are implemented in a new parameterization technique of the inner bucket surface. Key-feature of the model is the introduction of additional terms into the particle motion equations to account for various hydraulic losses and the flow spreading, which are regulated and evaluated with the aid of experimental data in a Laboratory Pelton turbine. The model is applied to study the jet-runner interaction in various operation conditions and then to perform numerical design optimization of the bucket shape, using a stochastic optimizer based on evolutionary algorithms. The obtained optimum runner attains remarkably higher hydraulic efficiency in the entire load range. Finally, a new small Pelton turbine （150 kW） is designed, manufactured and tested in the Laboratory, and its performance and efficiency verify the model predictions.
