This study compares the spectral sensitivity of remotely sensed satellite images,used for the detection of archaeological *** comparison was based on the relative spectral response(RSR)Filters of each *** signatures profiles were obtained using the GER-1500 field spectroradiometer under clear sky conditions for eight different *** field spectral signature curves were simulated to ALOS,ASTER,IKONOS,Landsat 7-ETM-,Landsat 4-TM,Landsat 5-TM and SPOT *** and near infrared(NIR)bandwidth reflectance were re-calculated to each one of these sensors using appropriate RSR ***,the normalised difference vegetation index(NdVI)and simple ratio(SR)vegetation profiles were analysed in order to evaluate their sensitivity to sensors spectral *** results have shown that IKONOS RSR filters can better distinguish buried archaeological remains as a result of difference in healthy and stress vegetation(approximately 18%difference in reflectance of the red and NIR band and nearly 0.07 to the NdVI profile).In comparison,all the other sensors showed similar results and *** difference of IKONOS sensor might be a result of its spectral characteristics(bandwidths and RSR filters)since they are different from the rest of sensors compared in this study.

Among the environmental threats,the intensification of natural hazards,such as soil erosion may threaten the integrity and value of cultural heritage *** this framework,the present study’s main objective was to identify archaeological sites susceptible by soil erosion,taking the case study of Chania prefecture in Crete *** sensed and other available geospatial datasets were analyzed in a GIS-based empirical model,namely Unit Stream Power Erosion and deposition(USPEd),to estimate the average annual soil loss and deposition rates due to waterinduced erosion in the study *** resultant erosion map was then intersected with the locations and surrounding zones of the known archaeological sites for identifying the sites and the portions of their vicinity being at *** results revealed that Chania prefecture and its cultural heritage are significantly affected by both soil loss and deposition *** the two processes,soil loss was found to be more intensive,influencing a larger part of the prefecture(especially to the west)as well as a higher amount of archaeological *** extreme and high soil loss classes were also detected to cover the most considerable portion of the sites’surrounding *** identification of the archaeological sites being most exposed to soil erosion hazard can constitute a basis for cultural heritage managers in order to take preventive preserva-tion measures and develop specific risk mitigation strategies.

On site observation is the most common way of monitoring cultural heritage sites and monuments in ***,this procedure that includes data collection,periodical observations,and multivariate risk assessment analysis is difficult to accomplish with the traditional practices and methods since it is time consuming and ***,many archaeological sites and monuments are located at inaccessible areas,far away from the main road network and urban *** remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems(GIS)can successfully confront this problem by providing the scientists with integrated monitoring of the study areas and the unique advantage to store and manipulate a large amount of spatial and attribute data *** the monitoring and identification of several natural and anthropogenic hazards in the vicinity of the cultural heritage sites in Cyprus,seems to be one of the main priorities of its governmental and municipal *** study aims to integrate both satellite remote sensing techniques and GIS in a multidisciplinary approach,for monitoring anthropogenic and natural hazards with the use of archived and up-to-date multitemporal remotely sensed images in the study area,namely in areas nearby cultural heritage sites and monuments in *** this study anthropogenic hazards include urbanisation and extended land use changes in the surroundings of archaeological sites and natural hazards concern seismicity and sea erosion.

Background: There are few randomized controlled trials with sufficient statistical power to assess the effectiveness of intraoperative cholangiography(IOC) in the detection and treatment of common bile duct injury(BdI) or retained stones during cholecystectomy. The best evidence so far regarding IOC and reduced morbidity related to BdI and retained common bile duct stones was derived from large populationbased cohort studies. Population-based studies also have the advantage of reflecting the outcome of the procedure as it is practiced in the community at large. However, the outcomes of these population-based studies are conflicting. data sources: A systematic literature search was conducted in 2020 to search for articles that contained the terms “bile duct injury”, “critical view of safety”, “bile duct imaging” or “retained stones” in combination with IOC. All identifed references were screened to select population-based studies and observational studies from large centers where socioeconomic or geographical selections were assumed not to cause selection bias. Results: The search revealed 273 references. A total of 30 articles fulflled the criteria for a large observational study with minimal risk for selection bias. The majority suggested that IOC reduces morbidity associated with BdI and retained common bile duct stones. In the short term, IOC increases the cost of surgery. However, this is offset by reduced costs in the long run since BdI or retained stones detected during surgery are managed immediately. Conclusions: IOC reduces morbidity associated with BdI and retained common bile duct stones. The reports reviewed are derived from large, unselected populations, thereby providing a high external validity. However, more studies on routine and selective IOC with well-defned outcome measures and sufficient statistical power are needed.

This paper considers the problem of smoothing a non-stationary time series(having either deterministic and/or stochastic trends) using the discrete cosine transform(dCT).The dCT is a powerful tool which has found fruitful applications in filtering and smoothing as it can closely approximate the optimal Karhunen-Loeve transform(KLT).In fact,it is known that it almost corresponds to the KLT for first-order autoregressive processes with a root close to unity:This is the case with most economic and financial time series.A number of new results are derived in the paper:(a) The explicit form of the linear smoother based on the dCT,which is found to have time-varying weights and that uses all observations;(b) the extrapolation of the dCT-smoothed series;(c) the form of the average frequency response function,which is shown to approximate the frequency response of the ideal low pass filter;(d) the asymptotic distribution of the dCT coefficients under the assumptions of deterministic or stochastic trends;(e) two news method for selecting an appropriate degree of smoothing,in general and under the assumptions in(d).These findings are applied and illustrated using several real world economic and financial time *** results indicate that the dCT-based smoother that is proposed can find many useful applications in economic and financial time series.

Humanin(HN)is a 24-amino acid mitochondrial-derived polypeptide with cytoprotective and anti-apoptotic effects that regulates the mitochondrial functions under stress *** evidence suggests the role of HN against age-related diseases,such as Alzheimer’s *** decline in insulin action is a metabolic feature of aging and thus,type 2 diabetes mellitus is considered an agerelated disease,as *** has been suggested that HN increases insulin sensitivity,improves the survival of pancreatic beta cells,and delays the onset of diabetes,actions that could be deployed in the treatment of *** aim of this review is to present the in vitro and in vivo studies that examined the role of HN in insulin resistance and diabetes and to discuss its newly emerging role as a therapeutic option against those conditions.

Surgical meshes have been employed in the management of a variety of pathological conditions including hernia,pelvic floor dysfunctions,periodontal guided bone regeneration,wound healing and more recently for breast plastic surgery after *** common pathologies affect a wide portion of the worldwide population;therefore,an effective and enhanced treatment is crucial to ameliorate patients’living conditions both from medical and aesthetic points of *** present,non-absorbable synthetic polymers are the most widely used class of biomaterials for the manufacturing of mesh implants for hernia,pelvic floor dysfunctions and guided bone regeneration,with polypropylene and poly tetrafluoroethylene being the most *** prostheses,such as surgical grafts,have been employed mainly for breast plastic surgery and wound healing *** the advantages of mesh implants to the treatment of these conditions,there are still many drawbacks,mainly related to the arising of a huge number of post-operative complications,among which infections are the most *** a mesh that could appropriately integrate with the native tissue,promote its healing and constructive remodelling,is the key aim of ongoing research in the area of surgical mesh *** this end,the adoption of new biomaterials including absorbable and natural polymers,the use of drugs and advanced manufacturing technologies,such as 3d printing and electrospinning,are under investigation to address the previously mentioned challenges and improve the outcomes of future clinical *** aim of this work is to review the key advantages and disadvantages related to the use of surgical meshes,the main issues characterizing each clinical procedure and the future directions in terms of both novel manufacturing technologies and latest regulatory considerations.
