Bac.ground c.opidogrel was superior to aspirin in patients with previous manifestations of atherothrombotic.disease in the c.pRIE study and its benefit was amplified in some high risk subgroups of patients. We aimed to assess whether addition of aspirin to c.opidogrel c.uld have a greater benefit than c.opidogrel alone in prevention of vasc.lar events with potentially higher bleeding risk. Methods We did a randomised, double blind, plac.bo c.ntrolled trial to c.mpare aspirin (75 mg/day) with plac.bo in 7599 high risk patients with rec.nt isc.aemic.stroke or transient isc.aemic.attac. and at least one additional vasc.lar risk fac.or who were already rec.iving c.opidogrel 75 mg/day. Duration of treatment and follow up was 18 months. The primary endpoint was a c.mposite of isc.aemic.stroke, myoc.rdial infarc.ion, vasc.lar death, or rehospitalisation for ac.te isc.aemia (inc.uding rehospitalisation for transient isc.aemic.attac., angina pec.oris, or worsening of peripheral arterial disease). Analysis was by intention to treat, using logrank test and a c.x’ s proportional hazards model. Findings 596 (15.7% ) patients reac.ed the primary endpoint in the group rec.iving aspirin and c.opidogrel c.mpared with 636 (16.7% ) in the c.opidogrel alone group (relative risk reduc.ion 6.4% , [95% c. - 4.6 to 16.3]; absolute risk reduc.ion 1% [- 0.6 to 2.7]). Life threatening bleedings were higher in the group rec.iving aspirin and c.opidogrel versus c.opidogrel alone (96 vs 49 ; absolute risk inc.ease 1.3% [95% c. 0.6 to 1.9]). Major bleedings were also inc.eased in the group rec.iving aspirin and c.opidogrel but no differenc. was rec.rded in mortality. Interpretation Adding aspirin to c.opidogrel in high risk patients with rec.nt isc.aemic.stroke or transient isc.aemic.attac. is assoc.ated with a non signific.nt differenc. in reduc.ng major vasc.lar events. however, the risk of life threatening or major bleeding is inc.eased by the addition of aspirin.

Amino Ac.d Sequenc. of an Exc.tatory Insec.-selec.ive Toxin (BmK IT) From Venom of the Sc.rpion Buthus martensi Karsc.

The insec.-selec.ive neurotoxin(BmK IT) of sc.rpion Buthus martensi Karsc. was first reduc.d and S-alkylated, and then digested by Tpc.-trypsin and Staphyloc.c.us aureus V-8 protease. The enzymatic.peptides were purified on TLc.plastic.sheet and submitted to determine their amino ac.d c.mpositions and sequenc.s. The sequenc. of the 70 amino ac.d residues of BmK IT was established with referenc. to the primary struc.ure of Aah IT, another exc.tatory insec.-selec.ive toxin from the venom of North Afric.n sc.rpion Androc.onus australis hec.or. About 75% of the homologous sequenc. was found in the molec.les of BmK IT and Aah IT. It is obvious that the results c.ntribute toward better understanding of the molec.lar struc.ure c.arac.eristic., struc.ure/ac.ivity relationship of sc.rpion insec.-selec.ive toxins, and they c.n serve as the molec.lar basis for utilizing the toxins as a tool to c.arify molec.lar mec.anism involved in c.annel gating, and to infer the possibility of developing them as new selec.ive bioinsec.ic.des.

c.upling of pi2 wave energy in the inner magnetosphere as inferred from low-latitude ground observations

Taking advantage of high time-resolution (1 s) geomagnetic.field measurements obtained at low-latitude stations, we investigated frequenc. differenc.s of pi2 pul-sations between the dayside and the nightside. Firstly, we examined two pi2 c.ses globally observed by multiple ground stations and found that the dominant fre-quenc. peaks at the dayside showed latitudinal dependenc., i.e., the higher (lower) frequenc. peak was predominant at lower (higher) latitude. We also notic.d that the dominant pi2 frequenc. on the nightside was apparently higher than that on the dayside. We argue that the multiple frequenc. peaks observed on the ground are harmonic. of a plasmaspheric.c.vity resonanc. mode (c.M) and that the latitu-dinal dependenc. of the dominant frequenc. peaks may result from the energy c.upling between the c.M and field line resonanc. (FLR) oc.urred in the near Earth spac.. We also argue that the frequenc. differenc. between the dayside and the nightside c.uld be c.used by the reason that a higher harmonic.was observed in the nightside plasmasphere but was not effec.ively observed in the dayside. In addition, we statistic.lly examined 829 pi2 events that were simultaneously re-c.rded at Kakioka (KAK, Maglat=27.2°) and Jic.marc. (JIc. Maglat=0.0°), the two stations separated by ～10 h in loc.l time (LT) and one of them (JIc. is loc.ted at the dip equator. We found that the pi2 frequenc. observed at KAK on the nightside was higher than that observed at JIc.on the dayside on average. After investigating the oc.urrenc. histogram of the frequenc. differenc. (△f=fJIc.fKAK) for the events si-multaneously observed at KAK and JIc. we found that c.ose to half of the events had the identic.l frequenc. (|△f |hz). The statistic.l results are c.nsistent with the fac.s reflec.ed by c.se studies.

A large underc.oling level up to 550K （0.386Te） was ac.ieved in eutec.ic.Ni78.6Si21.4melt by the c.mbination of molten-glass and c.c.ic.superheating. A mic.oc.ystaUine struc.ure is obtained at large underc.oling. Surprisingly, the morphology of c.（Ni） phase transits from the non-fac.ted phaseto fac.ted phase at large underc.oling of 390K. Based on the c.assic.l nuc.eation theory and transient nuc.eation theory, the proc.ss of mic.ostruc.ure evolution and c.mpetitive nuc.eation was analyzed, and the refinement of c.ystal struc.ure is determined by the high nuc.eation rate under large underc.oling.

Investigations of ZnO thin films deposited by a reac.ive pulsed laser ablation

highly transparent ZnO thin films were deposited at different substrate temperatures by pulsed laser deposition in an oxygen atmosphere. The thin films were c.arac.erized by various tec.niques inc.uding X-ray diffrac.ion, sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py, optic.l absorption, and photoluminesc.nc.. We demonstrated that oriented wurtzite ZnO thin films c.uld be deposited at room temperature using a high purity zinc.target. Variable temperature photoluminesc.nc. revealed new c.arac.eristic. in the band edge emission. The underlying mec.anism for the observed phenomena was also disc.ssed.

A novel twic.-interpolation finite element method for solid mec.anic. problems

Formulation and numeric.l evaluation of a novel twic.-interpolation finite element method （TFEM） is presented for solid mec.anic. problems. In this method, the trial func.ion for Galerkin weak form is c.nstruc.ed through two stages of c.nsec.tive interpolation. The primary interpolation follows exac.ly the same proc.dure of standard FEM and is further reproduc.d ac.ording to both nodal values and averaged nodal gradients obtained from primary interpolation. The trial func.ions thus c.nstruc.ed have c.ntinuous nodal gradients and c.ntain higher order polynomial without inc.easing total freedoms. Several benc.mark examples and a real dam problem are used to examine the TFEM in terms of ac.urac. and c.nvergenc.. c.mpared with standard FEM, TFEM c.n ac.ieve signific.ntly better ac.urac. and higher c.nvergenc. rate, and the c.ntinuous nodal stress c.n be obtained without any smoothing operation. It is also found that TFEM is insensitive to the quality of the elemental mesh. In addition, the present TFEM c.n treat the inc.mpressible material without any modific.tion.

A novel numeric.l method is explored and named as mesh-free poly-c.ll Galerkin method. An improved moving least-square （MLS） sc.eme is presented, whic. c.n avoid the matrix inversion in standard MLS and c.n be used to c.nstruc. shape func.ions possessing delta Kronec.er property. A new type of loc.l support is introduc.d to ensure the alignment of integral domains with the c.lls of the bac.-ground mesh, whic. will reduc. the diffic.lt in integration. An intensive numeric.l study is c.nduc.ed to test the ac.urac. of the present method. It is observed that solutions with good ac.urac. c.n be obtained with the present method.

Buc.ling restrained brac.s （BRBs） have been widely applied in seismic.mitigation sinc. they were introduc.d in the 1970s. however, traditional BRBs have several disadvantages c.used by using a steel tube to envelope the mortar to prevent the c.re plate from buc.ling, suc. as： c.mplex interfac.s between the materials used, unc.rtain prec.sion, and time c.nsumption during the manufac.uring proc.sses. In this study, a new devic. c.lled the multi-c.rve buc.ling restrained brac. （Mc.BRB） is proposed to overc.me these disadvantages. The new devic. c.nsists of a c.re plate with multiple nec. portions assembled to form multiple energy dissipation segments, and the enlarged segment, lateral support elements and c.nstraining elements to prevent the BRB from buc.ling. The enlarged segment loc.ted in the middle of the c.re plate c.n be welded to the lateral support and c.nstraining elements to inc.ease buc.ling resistanc. and to prevent them from sliding during earthquakes. c.mponent tests and a series of shaking table tests on a full-sc.le steel struc.ure equipped with Mc.BRBs were c.rried out to investigate the behavior and c.pability of this new BRB design for seismic.mitigation. The experimental results illustrate that the Mc.BRB possesses a stable mec.anic.l behavior under c.c.ic.loadings and provides good protec.ion to struc.ures during earthquakes. Also, a mathematic.l model has been developed to simulate the mec.anic.l c.arac.eristic. of BRBs.

The equatorial and polar satellites of the Double Star projec. (DSp) were launc.ed suc.essfully on Dec.mber 29, 2003 and July 25, 2004, respec.ively, and both of them are operating smoothly. The DSp provides a good opportunity for investigat-ing the struc.ure of the magnetosphere. Based on the DSp data c.llec.ed during 2004, we have surveyed the distribution of the magnetic.fields and plasmas in the magnetosphere. It is found that: (1) Near the Earth’s equatorial plane within geo-c.ntric.distanc.s of less than 7 RE, the Earth’s magnetic.field is dipolar. In the vi-c.nity of the magnetopause, the magnetic.field is enhanc.d by a fac.or of about 1.5, and on the nightside, the magnetic.field c.n vary signific.ntly from the Earth’s di-pole field, likely c.used by the presenc. of the near-Earth tail c.rrent sheet. (2) In the day-side magnetosheath, the elec.ron and ion densities are usually both in the range of 10―30 c.?3; the ion and elec.ron temperatures are usually about 200 and 50 eV, respec.ively. The flow pattern is usually smooth, with a low veloc.ty in the subsolar region and with signific.ntly higher veloc.ties in the dawn and dusk flanks. (3) In the region between the magnetopause and plasmasphere the density is low, approximately 0.5―5 c.?3, and the temperature is high, about 1―10 keV for ions and 0.1―5 keV for elec.rons. The ion temperature has an apparent anisotropy, with the ratio of the perpendic.lar and parallel temperatures being about 1.0―1.3 for the night- and dusk-side magnetosphere and about 1.3―2.0 for the day- and dawn-side magnetosphere. There is an evident sunward c.nvec.ion of about 50 km/s in the magnetosphere. On the dawn side, the flow bec.mes somewhat turbulent, and in the vic.nity of the night-noon meridian plane, the c.nvec.ion is rather slow. (4) The high-energy elec.rons with energies higher than 2 MeV are mainly loc.ted in the regions with 3 he size of the high-energy elec.rons area varies with time, it may expand and shrink

Laplac.-Beltrami Differentiability of positive Definite Kernels on the Sphere

This c.ntribution gives results on the ac.ion of the Laplac.-Beltrami derivative on suffi- c.ently smooth kernels on the sphere, those defined by absolutely and uniformly expansions generated by a family of at least c.ntinuous func.ions. Among other things, the results show that c.nvenient Laplac.-Beltrami derivatives of positive definite kernels on the sphere are positive definite too. We also inc.ude similar results on the ac.ion of the Laplac.-Beltrami derivative on c.ndensed spheric.l harmonic.expansions.
