Dynamic control of high-voltage actuator arrays by light-pattern projection on photoconductive switches

The ability to control high-voltage actuator arrays relies, to date, on expensive microelectronic processes or on individual wiring of each actuator to a single off-chip high-voltage switch. Here we present an alternative approach that uses on-chip photoconductive switches together with a light projection system to individually address high-voltage actuators. Each actuator is connected to one or more switches that are nominally OFF unless turned ON using direct light illumination. We selected hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) as our photoconductive material, and we provide a complete characterization of its light to dark conductance, breakdown field, and spectral response. The resulting switches are very robust, and we provide full details of their fabrication processes. We demonstrate that the switches can be integrated into different architectures to support both AC and DC-driven actuators and provide engineering guidelines for their functional design. To demonstrate the versatility of our approach, we demonstrate the use of the photoconductive switches in two distinctly different applications—control of µm-sized gate electrodes for patterning flow fields in a microfluidic chamber and control of cm-sized electrostatic actuators for creating mechanical deformations for haptic displays.

Removal of saxitoxin and anatoxin-a by PAC in the presence and absence of microcystin-LR and/or cyanobacterial cells

Cyanobacteria can produce cyanotoxins such as microcystin-LR(MC),saxitoxin(STX),and anatoxin-a(ANTX-a)which are harmful to humans and other *** removal efficiencies of STX and ANTX-a by powdered activated carbon(PAC)was investigated,aswell as when MC-LR and cyanobacteriawere *** conductedwith distilled water and then source water,using the PAC dosages,rapid mix/flocculation mixing intensities and contact times of two drinking water treatment plants in northeast *** pH 8 and 9,STX removal was 47%-81%in distilled water and 46%-79%in source water,whereas it was 0-28%for pH 6 in distilled water and 31%-52%in source *** 1.6μg/L or 20μg/L MC-LR was present with STX,STX removal was increased with PAC simultaneously removing 45%-65%of the 1.6μg/L MC-LR and 25%-95%of the 20μg/L MC-LR depending on the ***-a removal at pH 6 was 29%-37%for distilled water and 80%for source water,whereas it was 10%-26%for pH 8 in distilled water and 28%for pH 9 in source *** presence of cyanobacteria cells decreased ANTX-a removal by at least 18%.When 20μg/L MC-LR was present with ANTX-a in source water,59%-73%ANTX-a and 48%-77%of MCLR was removed at pH 9 depending on the PAC *** general,a higher PAC dose led to higher cyanotoxin *** study also documented that multiple cyanotoxins can be effectively removed by PAC for water at pH’s between 6 and 9.

The authors obtain new characterizations of unconditional Cauchy series in terms of separation properties of subfamilies of p(N), and a generalization of the Orlicz-Pettis Theorem is also obtained. New results on the uniform convergence on matrices and a new version of the Hahn-Schur summation theorem are proved. For matrices whose rows define unconditional Cauchy series, a better sufficient condition for the basic Matrix Theorem of Antosik and Swartz, new necessary conditions and a new proof of that theorem are given.

Crude oil as an energy source is widely considered as the most important energy in the world even with the rapid growth of alternative *** problem of oil production decline has addressed growing concerns about applying new technology such as waterflooding to increase the oil recovery *** has been highly relying on the revenue from oil ***,it is critical to evaluate the profitability of waterflooding technology in Ecuador and provide policy suggestions to the *** purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of applying water injection in the oilfields of Ecuador using both deterministic and probabilistic *** data used with the purposes of the economic valuation is collected from an Ecuadorian oilfield(CUP Field).Three alternative options are proposed based on different timing of waterflooding application,through Discounted Cash Flow Analysis and Monte Carlo simulation the alternatives are compared to identify the most profitable development option for a reservoir to be produced with water *** influence of different strategies on profitability and the risks introduced by uncertainties on the oilfield development projects are discussed in this study as well.A waterflooding alternative applied from the beginning of the oilfield development got NPV of 94.48 MMUSD and Internal rate of return of 44.42%.Furthermore,probabilities of getting a positive outcome for NPV and IRR are 95% and 96.7 % *** combination of the two methods allows the decision maker to improve their decision process,with the insights provided by economic indicators as the net present value and internal rate of ***,with the probabilities of getting positive outcomes generated by the simulation,it provided an improvement of the criterion reaching high-level reliability.

Stem cells can differentiate in various cell types during tissue maintenance or repair.

Swiss pumped hydro storage potential for Germany’s electricity system under high penetration of intermittent renewable energy

In order to cut greenhouse-gas emissions and increase energy security,the European Commission stimulates the deployment of intermittent renewable energy sources(IRES) towards *** an electricity system with high shares of IRES implemented in the network,energy balancing like storage is needed to secure grid stability and smooth demand *** hydro storage(PHS) is at this moment the best option for large scale *** has strong ambitions to further develop their PHS sector and become the battery of *** this research,the potential of the Swiss PSH plants is explored,whilst taking inflow into the upper reservoirs of the PHS plants into *** simulate electricity imbalance,Germany is used as a case *** already has a high penetration of IRES and has plans to increase installed IRES *** using an energy planning model(Power Plan),three future scenarios of the German electricity system were designed,each with a different set of IRES installed(solar,mixed and wind).Results show that the Swiss battery ambition offers most benefits to a wind-oriented scenario,reducing both shortages as well as *** inflow in Swiss PHS-reservoirs is of minor importance when looking at security of supply,although it was shown that the solarscenario profits more from inflow in terms of system ***,a potential conflict was observed in the solar-scenario between the need for electricity storage and the storage of natural inflow,resulting in more surpluses in the system when inflow was taken into account.

Pelvic organ prolapse （POP） is non-fatal conditions which can markedly affect a patient’s quality of life. Multiple recently developed pelvic reconstructive surgeries have led to a recent expansion in China. In this study, we would like to discuss various aspects of the evaluation and management of POP and raise the question of what is sufficient evidence for the adoption of innovative treatments for POP.
