FSS: algorithm and neural network accelerator for style transfer

Neural networks(NNs), owing to their impressive performance, have gradually begun to dominate multimedia processing. For resource-constrained and energy-sensitive mobile devices, an efficient NN accelerator is necessary. Style transfer is an important multimedia application. However, existing arbitrary style transfer networks are complex and not well supported by current NN accelerators, limiting their application on mobile devices. Moreover, the quality of style transfer needs improvement. Thus, we design the Fast Style system(FSS), where a novel algorithm and an NN accelerator are proposed for style transfer. In FSS, we first propose a novel arbitrary style transfer algorithm, Fast Style. We propose a light network that contributes to high quality and low computational complexity and a prior mechanism to avoid retraining when the style changes. Then, we redesign an NN accelerator for Fast Style by applying two improvements to the basic NVIdiA deep learning accelerator(NVDLA) architecture. First, a flexible dat FSM and wt FSM are redesigned to enable the original data path to perform other operations(including the GRAM operation)by software programming. Moreover, statistics and judgment logic are designed to utilize the continuity of a video stream and remove the data dependency in the instance normalization, which improves the accelerator performance by 18.6%. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed Fast Style can achieve higher quality with a lower computational cost, making it more suitable for mobile devices. The proposed NN accelerator is implemented on the Xilinx VCU118 FPGA under a 180-MHz clock. Experimental results show that the accelerator can stylize 512×512-pixel video with 20 FPS, and the measured performance reaches up to 306.07 GOPS. The ASIC implementation in TSMC 28 nm achieves about 22 FPS in the case of a 720-p video.

In terms of the volume-integrated Poynting vector, we present a quantum field-theory investigation of the zitterbewegung （ZB） of photons, and show that this ZB occurs only in the presence of virtual longitudinal and scalar photons. To present a heuristic explanation for such a ZB, by assuming that the space time is sufficiently close to the flat Minkowski space, we show that the gravitational interaction can result in the ZB of photons.

The electrical conductivity of Tibetan eclogite was investigated at pressures of 1.5-3.5 GPa and temperatures of 500-803 K using impedance spectroscopy within a frequency range of 10-1 -10^6 Hz. The electrical conductivity of eclogite increases with increasing temperature （which can be approximated by the Arrhenius equation）, and is weakly affected by pressure. At each tested pressure, the electrical conductivity is weakly temperature dependent below -650 K and more strongly temperature de- pendent above -650 K. The calculated activation energies and volumes are 44±1 kJ/mol and -0.6±0.1 cm3/mol for low tem- peratures and 97±3 kJ/mol and -1.2±0.2 cm3/mol for high temperatures, respectively. When applied to the depth range of 45-100 km in Tibet, the laboratory data give conductivities on the order of 10^-15 -10^-4.5 S/m, within the range of geophysical conductivity profiles.

The late Permian–Triassic granites in southeastern China have important tectonic significance for the evolution of South China. Here, we present the detailed geochronological, geochemical and petrological analyses for the Jinlongyan(JLY) granite in northwest Fujian Province, southeast China. LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb dating yielded a weighted average ^(206)Pb/^(238)U age of 224.1 ±3.3 Ma. The granite is mainly comprised of K-feldspar,plagioclase, quartz, biotite and minor amphibole. It is characterized by enrichments in Rb, Th, REEs(total REE = 295.1–694.3 ppm), and HFSEs(e.g., Zr = 289–520 ppm, Hf = 9.3–15.0 ppm, Y = 36.2–68.2 ppm) but depletions in Ba, Sr, Eu and Ti. The granite is metaluminous to weakly peraluminous and show a clear A-type granite geochemical signature with high SiO_2(70.89 wt%–75.76 wt%), total alkalis(Na_2O + K_2O = 7.51 wt%–8.72 wt%), Ga/Al ratios(10000 Ga/Al = 2.72–3.43). Insitu zircon Hf isotope analysis shows their eHf(t) values ranging from-7.2 to-3.2, with Mesoproterozoic T2DM ages(1308–1525 Ma). Whole-rock Nd isotope data show their eNd(t) values in the range of-9.5 to-9.1 and yield paleoproterozoic TDMages(1606–1985 Ma). These characteristics indicate that the JLY A-type granite magma was formed by the partial melting of Meso-Paleoproterozoic crust rocks in the Cathaysia Block. Our study of the JLY A-type granite, together with other Triassic A-type granitesin South China, defines an extensional environment in the late Triassic which probably was caused by the collision of the South China Block with Indochina Block.

Triclosan(TCS)is a ubiquitous antimicrobial used in daily consumer *** reports have shown that TCS could induce hepatotoxicity,endocrine disruption,disturbance on immune function and impaired thyroid *** is critical in the elimination of toxins,while the effects of TCS on kidney have not yet been *** aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of TCS exposure on kidney function and the possible underlying mechanisms in *** C57BL/6 mice were orally exposed to TCS with the doses of 10 and 100 mg/(kg•day)for 13 *** was dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO)and diluted by corn oil for *** oil containing DMSO was used as vehicle *** and kidney tissues were collected for *** associated with kidney function,oxidative stress,inflammation and fibrosis were *** results showed that TCS could cause renal injury as was revealed by increased levels of renal function markers including serum creatinine,urea nitrogen and uric acid,as well as increased oxidative stress,pro-inflammatory cytokines and fibroticmarkers in a dose dependent manner,whichweremore significantly in 100 mg/(kg•day)*** spectrometry-based analysis of metabolites relatedwith lipid metabolism demonstrated the occurrence of lipid accumulation and defective fatty acid oxidation in 100 mg/(kg•day)TCS-exposed mouse *** processes might lead to lipotoxicity and energy depletion,thus resulting in kidney fibrosis and functional *** together,the present study demonstrated that TCS could induce lipid accumulation and fatty acid metabolism disturbance in mouse kidney,whichmight contribute to renal function *** present study further widens our insights into the adverse effects of TCS.

To design a surface with large slip or larger drag reduction is a pop issue in the fields of liquid transporting and body swimming. In this context, it is a crucial problem to measure the slip length for these surfaces. Here we propose a novel method by using rheometer for this objective. This method is implemented by designing the distribution of the super-hydrophobic area on the sample. Using this method, a slip length of 40 μm for 70 wt% glycerin flow over a super-hydrophobic surface with stripe structure (the period, width and height of ridges are 150 μm, 40 μm and 65 μm, respectively) is measured. The result shows that the slip length measured using this method is in good agreement with former results measured by other methods. This method is fit for measuring the slip length of super-hydrophobic surface whose structure ranges from microto nanoscale.

Impact Fretting Wear Behavior of Alloy 690 Tubes in Dry and Deionized Water Conditions

The impact fretting wear has largely occurred at nuclear power device induced by the flow-induced vibra- tion, and it will take potential hazards to the service of the equipment. However, the present study focuses on the tangential fretting wear of alloy 690 tubes. Research on impact fretting wear of alloy 690 tubes is limited and the related research is imminent. Therefore, impact fretting wear behavior of alloy 690 tubes against 304 stainless steels is investigated. Deionized water is used to simulate the flow environment of the equipment, and the dry envi- ronment is used for comparison. Varied analytical tech- niques are employed to characterize the wear and tribochemical behavior during impact fretting wear. Char- acterization results indicate that cracks occur at high impact load in both water and dry equipment; however, the water as a medium can significantly delay the cracking time. The crack propagation behavior shows a jagged shape in the water, but crack extended disorderly in dry equip- ment because the water changed the stress distribution and retarded the friction heat during the wear process. The SEM and XPS analysis shows that the main failure mechanisms of the tube under impact fretting are fatiguewear and friction oxidation. The effect of medium（water） on fretting wear is revealed, which plays a potential and promising role in the service of nuclear power device and other flow equipments.

Spatial and Temporal Response of Equatorial Ionization Anomaly to the 17 March 2015 Storm from Global Ionosphere Map

The responses of Equatorial Ionosphere Anomaly（EIA） to the storm occurred on 17 March 2015 were studied using Global Ionosphere Map（GIM）. The variations of Total Electron Content（TEC）, latitudinal TEC gradients and the rate of latitudinal TEC gradients in EIA regions were investigated in 75？E, 110？E and-60？E longitudinal sectors. The results from the GIM data showed that the distributions of the latitudinal gradient of TEC became monotonous in three longitudes on 18 March（the first day of the recovery phase）, but the variations were different. On 18 March, the magnitudes of latitudinal gradients decreased in spatial and temporal in 75？E and 110？E, which means the EIA was suppressed during the recovery phase of the storm, especially in 110？E. The magnitudes of latitudinal TEC gradients showed an obvious increase in spatial and temporal in-60？E. The SAMI2 reproduced the suppression of EIA with a disturbance dynamo electric field, which indicated that the physical process controlled the behaviors of the plasma during the recovery phase of the storm.
