Five soil samples collected from shooting ranges in 1998 were stored under a closed condition for 5 *** addition to SEM and XRD investigations,the total organic carbon content(TOC),inorganic carbon content(TIC),δC andδ0 of carbonates andδC of plant remains were *** concentrations of total carbon contents,the sum of TOC and TIC,remained the same within the 5 years storage,whereas the TOC and TIC contents decreased and increased,*** TIC increase is associated with a decreased TOC,suggesting a conversion of organic carbon into inorganic *** a conversion is evidenced by the presence of primary lead carbonates and carbon isotopic composition of lead carbonates. It can be concluded that soil organic matters play an important role in the process of bullets weathering and controls migration of the elevated lead in the soil.

An acidic(p H 5.2)firing range soil,FDR26 in New Jersey,with Pb content of 6,017 mg kg,was amended by adding 2.5 wt%fish bone *** leaching test,toxicity characteristic leaching procedure(TCLP),and spectroscopic technique,non-destructive X-ray absorption near edge structure(LCF-XANES),were employed to determine the leaching behavior and Pb speciation prior to and after the TCLP *** TCLP-Pb was 209 mg Lafter the standard 18 h of tumbling and was increased to 288 mg Lafter an extended tumbling time of 96 *** XANES of TCLP residue confirmed the existence of extractable Pb species following the18 h ***-Pb was also reduced to 1.4 mg Lafter phosphate addition followed by 28 days of *** results revealed the transformation of metallic Pb into insoluble pyromorphite precipitates during the leaching *** acidic extraction solution significantly increased thedissolution of phosphate source and Pb species,and resulted in improved Pb immobilization.

Line Patterns Segmentation in Blurred Images Using Contrast Enhancement and Local Entropy Thresholding

Finger vein extraction and recognition hold significance in various applications due to the unique and reliable nature of finger vein patterns. While recently finger vein recognition has gained popularity, there are still challenges associated with extracting and processing finger vein patterns related to image quality, positioning and alignment, skin conditions, security concerns and processing techniques applied. In this paper, a method for robust segmentation of line patterns in strongly blurred images is presented and evaluated in vessel network extraction from infrared images of human fingers. In a four-step process: local normalization of brightness, image enhancement, segmentation and cleaning were involved. A novel image enhancement method was used to re-establish the line patterns from the brightness sum of the independent close-form solutions of the adopted optimization criterion derived in small windows. In the proposed method, the computational resources were reduced significantly compared to the solution derived when the whole image was processed. In the enhanced image, where the concave structures have been sufficiently emphasized, accurate detection of line patterns was obtained by local entropy thresholding. Typical segmentation errors appearing in the binary image were removed using morphological dilation with a line structuring element and morphological filtering with a majority filter to eliminate isolated blobs. The proposed method performs accurate detection of the vessel network in human finger infrared images, as the experimental results show, applied both in real and artificial images and can readily be applied in many image enhancement and segmentation applications.
