The visual spatial attention mechanism in the brain was studied in 16 young subjects through the visual search paradigm of precue-target by the event-related potential (ERP) technique, with the attentive ranges cued by different scales of Chinese character and region cues. The results showed that the response time for Chinese character cues was much longer than that for region cues especially for small region cues. With the exterior interferences, the target stimuli recognition under region cues was much quicker than that under Chinese character cues. Compared with that under region cues, targets under Chinese character cues could lead to increase of the posterior P1, decrease of the N1 and increase of the P2. It should also be noted that the differences between region cues and Chinese character cues were affected by the interference types. Under exterior interferences, no significant difference was found between region cues and Chinese character cues; however, it was not the case under the interior interferences. Considering the difference between the exterior interferences and the interior interferences, we could conclude that with the increase of difficulty in target recognition there was obvious difference in the consumption of anterior frontal resources by target stimuli under the two kinds of cues.

The effects of stress components on nucleation sites and propagation directions of stress cor- rosion cracks in brass were investigated with specimens under mode Ⅱ and mode Ⅲ loadings. The results indicated that under mode Ⅱ loading,stress corrosion cracks nucleated on the site with maximum normal stress component and propagated along the plane perpendieular to the maximum normal stress,under mode Ⅲ loading,the stress corrosion crack was not evident on the 45°plane due to the general corrosion in aqueous solution with high NH_4OH concentra- tion,while stress corroded in aqueous solution with low NH_4OH concentration, numerous cracks with spacings of 10—150μm were found on the 45°plane with maximum normal stress and no stress corrosion cracks was observed on the plane with maximum shear stress.

Cells therapy for Parkinson's disease-so close and so far away

One of the strategies of treating Parkinson's disease(PD) is the replacement of lost neurons in the substantia nigra with healthy dapamingergic *** sources for cells range from autologous grafts of dopamine secreting cells,fetal ventral mesencephalon tissue,to various stem cell *** the past quarter century,many experimental replacement therapies have been tried on PD animal models as well as human patients,yet none resulted in satisfactory outcomes that warrant wide *** progress in stem cell biology has shown that nuclear transfer embryonic stem cells(ntES) or induced pluripotent stem cells(iPS) derived cells can be used to successfully treat rodent PD models,thus solving the problem of immunorejection and paving the way for future autologous transplantations for treating ***,however,post mortem analysis of patients who received fetal brain cell transplantation revealed that implanted cells are prone to degeneration just like endogenous neurons in the same pathological area,indicating long-term efficacy of cell therapy of PD needs to overcome the degenerating environment in the brain.A better understanding of neurodegeneration in the midbrain appeared to be a necessary step in developing new cell therapies in Parkinson's *** is likely that future cell replacement will focus on not only ameliorating symptoms of the disease but also trying to slow the progression of the disease by either neuroprotection or restoring the micro-environment in the midbrain.

Clinical and endoscopic features of Chinese reflux esophagitis patients

AIM： To analyze the clinical and endoscopic features of Chinese patients with reflux esophagitis （RE）. METHODS： A total of 1405 RE patients were analyzed retrospectively. Data on gender, age, presence/absence of H pylori infection and associated esophageal hiatal hernia were collected. Esophagitis was divided into different grades according to Los Angeles Classification. RESULTS： Of 1882. patients, 1405 were diagnosed as RE. The ratio of male to female patients was 1.75：1 （P 〈 0.01）. The mean age of male and female patients was significantly different （P = 0.01）. The peak age at onset of the disease was 40-60 years. According to Los Angeles Classification, there were significant differences in the age of patients with grades A and B compared to patients with grades C and D （P 〈 0.01）. Two hundred and seventy-seven patients were infected with H pyiorl, the infection rate was low （P 〈 0.01）. Complication of esophageal hiatal hernia was found to be significantly associated with the severity of esophagitis and age in 195 patients （P 〈 0.01）. Esophageal mucosa damages were mainly located at the right esophageal wall. CONCLUSION： The peak age of onset of RE is 40-60 years and higher in males than in females. The mean age of onset of RE is lower in males than in females. The infection rate of Hpylori is significantly decreased in patients with esophagitis. Old age and esophageal hiatal hernia are associated with more severe esophagitis. Right esophageal mucosal damage can occur more often in RE patients.

Objectives To evaluate peripheral auditory dysfunction in senile dementia of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and its relationship with cognitive dysfunction. Methods Pure tone thresholds,word recognition scores (WRS), acoustic immittance and auditory brain-stem responses (ABR) were tested to evaluate the auditory function in 43 AD patients and 50 normal subjects. The test reliability in these subjects was examined before the test results were evaluated for their correlation with the Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE) score. Results There were no statistically significant differences in peripheral auditory functions between the two ears in the tested subjects or between the two groups when the auditometric results of the right ear were compared(P > 0.05). Also, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups when audiometric test reliability, acoustic impedance and ABR results were compared(P > 0.05). Conclutions The pure tone audiometric threshold and WRS in AD patients are similar to those in comparable non-AD senile subjects. Peripheral auditory dysfunction is not related to cognitive dysfunction.

Protective effect of liver ischemic preconditioning on rat hepatocytes

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) protects liver graft function following ischemia in liver transplantation and liver resection. The aim of this study was to assess the advantages and any potential disadvantages of liver IPC prior to isolation for rat hepatocytes during isolation and cryopreservation. After isolating and thawing the cryopreserved hepatocytes after 14 and 2. d,cell viability,efficiency,and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in preserve solution were examined for every group. Groups treated with IPC had better cell viability determination,assessment of plating efficiency and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay than Group without IPC,suggesting that IPC prior to isolation may have a significant protective effect on hepatocytes subjected to isolation and short period cryopreservation.

ERK1/2.contributes negative regulation to STAT3 activity in HSS-transfected HepG2.cells

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is a recently characterized transcription factor which is essential to liver regeneration. We have previously reported that hepatic stimulator substance (HSS), a novel growthpromoting substance, phosphorylated the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptors and activated downstream Ras-MAP kinase (extracellular signal-regulated kinases, ERK1/2. cascade. However, whether HSS signal is related to STAT3 pathway remains unclear. The present study is aiming to explore the regulatory effect of activation of ERK1/2.evoked by HSS on STAT3 phosphorylation and STAT3 signaling. Human hepatoma cell line HepG2.was stably transfected with HSS cDNA and HSS expression was measured by Northern blot. The results showed that the transfection of HSS into HepG2.resulted in remarkable increase in cellular proliferation as compared with the non-transfected cells, and it was further proved that the cellular proliferation in the HSS-transfected cells was related to ERK1/2.a

Somato_visceral interaction or acupoint_visceral interaction is an important subject that greatly concerns scholars of both Chinese traditional and Western modern medicine. The role of our newly discovered spinal projection neurons and type A or C spinal ganglion neurons in convergence and integration of somato_visceral sensation is introduced. The possible challenge brought about by these related results onto some traditional concepts in neuroscience is also discussed.
