A network based efficient drug repurposing strategy for targeting diabesity

Type II diabetes and obesity are two of the most prevalent metabolic disorders effecting a huge population throughout the world. Research over the last decade has unequivocally established considerable molecular links between them and hence they are often described in conjugation as ‘diabesity’. The hallmarks of type II diabetes are primarily reduced insulin sensitivity, progressive insulin resistance and consequent hyperinsulinemia.1 Whereas, hyperinsulinemia promotes a plethora of fat synthesis from excess circulating carbohydrate and hyperactive fat storage mechanisms, ultimately inducing hepatic steatosis, myosteatosis and pancreatic steatosis.1 This in turn, aggravates the insulin sensitivity further, inflicting more insulin resistance and even more hyperinsulinemia. Needless to mention that the vicious process in turn, promotes uncontrolled weight gain1 and many secondary metabolic disorders. The prevalent anti-diabetic and anti-obesity medications comes with several limitations ranging from inefficiency to adverse side effects.2 Here, we report an efficient strategy of repositioning previously approved drugs with novel indication in the context of diabesity by investigating deregulated signalling axes affecting patients with both the disorders. Our approach relies extensively on deciphering the strength of gene association in various interactomes, as it is known that within networks, genes linked to similar disease phenotypes tend to be functionally similar3 and remain proximal to each other.4 Moreover, the potential drug targets associated to a disease pathway also cluster proximal to the disease pathways.

Development of a Tribofidelic Human Heel Surrogate for Barefoot Slip Testing

Barefoot slips contribute to over 37% of recurrent fall-related injuries across all age *** study slip risk across a wide range of flooring conditions,slip meters with barefoot surrogates(i.e.,sensors,as per ASTM standard nomenclature)such as animal skins and rubbers have been used to date,which exhibit biomechanical and frictional properties widely different from the barefoot human *** of a surrogate which can accurately simulate the human heel skin properties would be immensely beneficial for realistic assessment of barefoot slipping risk.A novel surrogate was developed using 3D scanning and printing,and biomimetics,which precisely simulates the biomechanical and frictional properties of the barefoot human heel *** slip testing was conducted with this surrogate on three common bathroom floorings and with six different *** of Friction(COF)results similar to human slipping experiments,high repeatability and reproducibility across wet and oily flooring conditions,were confirmed through experiments with the developed heel skin *** heel skin surrogate would be an indispensable model for accurate estimation of barefoot risk against slips and falls in bathrooms,bathtubs,and swimming pools.

A multi-barrier antibiotics loaded biodegradable composite bone cement for resolving chronic osteomyelitis has been studied to understand the physico-mechanical properties,drug loading/eluting efficiency,and different merits and demerits prior to clinical *** successful induction of bone infection in 28 rabbits using methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)strains,calcium sulfate/bioactive glass based composite cement was implanted in 12 defects to assess its performance over parenteral therapy with microscopic and radiological examination for 90 *** composite cement revealed acceptable physico-mechanical properties and controlled drug elution ***,the antibiotics concentrations in bone up to 42 days were sufficient to kill MRSA without eliciting adverse drug *** striking feature of platelets aggregation by composite cement could assist bone *** controlled degradation with simultaneous entrapment of composite cement within the osteoid tissues and complete repair of infected cortical defects(holes)in rabbit tibia at 6 weeks indicated the excellent anti-infective and osteoconductive properties of composite ***,the animal study demonstrated the superiority of composite over injectable antibiotic therapy based on infection resolution and bone *** thereby conclude that the composite cement can be effectively applied in the treatment of resistant cases of chronic osteomyelitis.

BACKGROUND The coexistence of a heterotopic pregnancy with a giant ovarian cyst is an incredibly rare abnormal pregnancy in cases of natural *** incidence of this condition has increased significantly as a result of the continuous development of assisted reproductive *** this type of pregnancy occurs,both the continuation of intrauterine pregnancy and the life of the pregnant woman are severely *** diagnosis and treatment using safe and effective methods are paramount in this *** SUMMARY A 30-year-old primigravida at a gestation age determined as 8 wk 4 d by scan was admitted to the hospital with heterotopic pregnancy and a right ovarian *** resection of the ectopic pregnancy was performed,but the intrauterine pregnancy and ovarian cyst were *** The approach to a patient with heterotopic pregnancy and a giant ovarian cyst is individualized base on the fertility *** recommend the following:(1)If the patient satisfies parity and has no fertility requirement,a laparoscopic salpingectomy should be performed and the giant ovarian cyst and intrauterine pregnancy removed;(2)If the patient has fertility requirements wishes to have more children in the future,laparoscopic salpingectomy or salpingostomy should be performed and the intrauterine pregnancy *** ovarian cyst aspiration can be performed under ultrasound and resection can be done after delivery;and(3)Heterotopic pregnancy should be diagnosed early by active surveillance during antenatal visits using ultra sound as this is important for the avoidance of catastrophic complications.

We report a straightforward tool to investigate insulator-metal transition in RCoO_(3)(R=Pr,and Nd)nanoparticles prepared by a sol-gel *** analysis(TGA)of the as-prepared gel is performed to get the lowest possible calcination temperature of RCoO_(3)*** Rietveld refinement of the powder X-ray diffraction(XRD)patterns for both samples shows that the samples crystallize in the orthorhombic(Pnma)phase at room *** particle size of the sample is determined by scanning electron *** conductivity of the materials is analyzed in the temperature range from 303 K to 673 K and in the frequency range from 42 Hz to 1.1 *** insulator-to-metal transition of PrCoO_(3)and NdCoO_(3)is analyzed by ac impedance *** resistivity measurement is also done to cross check the insulator-metal transition in RCoO_(3)system.

Quality Provision of Comprehensive Sexuality Education and Sexual and Reproductive Health in Resource Constrained Higher Education Institutions: A Case of Mukuba University

In an effort to ensure that Institutions of Higher Learning provide quality Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) at the level of Universities and Colleges, indeveloping countries such as Zambia, some universities have engaged in offering programmes and services in CSE and SRH. However, the provision of such programmes has had some limitations in terms of resources to ensure quality delivery. As a result, there was a need to examine the provision of CSE and SRH in a resource constrained Mukuba University. The study has three research objectives: 1) to examine the CSE and SRH programmes and services that are available at Mukuba University;2) to determine the actual resources available for the University to ensure quality provision of CSE and SRH to students;3) to use views and opinions of students and academics to examine the extent to which the CSE and SRH are reflected as standards by UNESCO and universities and colleges. The study took a pragmatic philosophy stance and convergent parallel research design of mixed methods;the primary approach is qualitative which will be analysed using thematic analysis, while the quantitative approach was secondary and the data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The study envisaged some implications that include the rise in communicable diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), gender based violence, general lack of information on matters relating to CSE and SRH among students at Mukuba University. The policy implication is that policy makers will be able to formulate policies that address the needs and challenges of students in providing quality CSE and SRH programmes and services for a university that is constrained with resources.
