Safe acupuncture and dry needling during pregnancy:New Zealand physiotherapists' opinion and practice

Objective: Acupuncture guidelines have advised caution when treating women during pregnancy,because historical ‘‘forbidden" acupuncture points are believed to stimulate miscarriage or early *** recent research demonstrating that acupuncture is a useful and safe treatment tool for pregnancy-related low-back pain(LBP) and pelvic girdle pain(PGP), it is postulated that fear of miscarriage and subsequent blame by association, restricts its provision. More recently, an increase in dry needling(DN) courses for physiotherapists has potentiated the rapid growth in DN practice in New Zealand(NZ). Many dry needlers do not consider DN to be a form of acupuncture; it is unknown if they have similar safety ***: NZ registered physiotherapists practicing acupuncture and/or DN were invited to participate in an electronic survey to examine their practice and level of understanding in regard to safe needling during ***: Of 124 respondents, only 60(48%) would needle pregnant women, with a further 66% of those still expressing safety concerns. NZ physiotherapists practicing DN only, were more likely to needle areas related to ‘‘forbidden" points in all trimesters. However, overall, NZ physiotherapists were less likely to needle ‘‘forbidden" points than their UK ***: Conflicting literature and a ‘‘fear of blame" influences NZ physiotherapists' decisions to offer needling(both acupuncture and DN) during pregnancy. Further training in this field is recommended to ensure safe practice and adequate provision of acupuncture treatment options for pregnant women suffering musculoskeletal pain, such as LBP and PGP. Further research, particularly into DN, for women during pregnancy, is warranted.

Acupuncture Adudit of Pre-Birth Treatment and Its Correlation to Reduced Medical Intervention during Delivery

Midwives in the Wellington region have noted that women receiving prebirth acupuncture consistently experience more efficient labours. Midwives report that the length of labour is reduced, particularly in primigravid women, with a reduction in medical intervention required. This paper will evaluate an audit of 15 midwives who have completed a specialized training programme in acupuncture and currently offer prebirth acupuncture as an adjunct to their midwifery practice. This audit will evaluate the data collected over a four month time period and will analyze the following: the acupuncture points used by the midwives for prebirth treatment; the percentage of women who went into spontaneous natural labour following prebirth acupuncture; the type of delivery following those women who required a medical induction including the percentage who had surgical, instrumental or normal vaginal delivery; length of labour for all women with percentages for primigravid and multigravid women; pharmacological analgesia used during labour including details of the numbers of women who used an epidural, pethadine or nitrous oxide as analgesia; the type of delivery for all women receiving prebirth acupuncture including the percentage of Caesarean section, forceps, vacuum and normal vaginal delivery. This data will be compared to current relevant maternity statistics to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture as a prebirth treatment.

Gene bank scheduling of seed regeneration: Interim report on a long term storage study

A major challenge for the management of gene banks is the maintenance of good seed health in the *** germplasm collections >10 000 accessions often have been acquired from different sources over a range of dates,may differ in germination at time of deposition in the gene bank,and may have genetic differences in seed *** major storage variables affecting seed longevity are temperature and seed moisture *** varieties of each pea(Pisum sativus L.),lentil(Lens culinaris Medikus ***),and chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.),were stored at three temperatures;40,20,and 2°C,each with three seed moisture levels of 10.9–13.8%(high),7.9–10.3%(medium),and 7–7.8%(low),in the Australian Temperate Field Crops Collection gene *** longevity at a given storage period was estimated by the corresponding germination percentage for each *** paper is an interim report on seed viability decline in the first seven years of this seed longevity study,in which viability decline towards zero was almost completed in the three seed moisture treatments at 40°C and the 20°C high seed moisture treatment,but had not declined in the other *** longevity positively responded to a reduction in temperature and then to a reduction in seed *** number of days in storage for seed germination decline to 85%(p85),and to 50%(p50) for mean seed viability,are reported by storage/varietal *** p85 and p50 showed significant inverse linear responses with seed moisture at 40°C for pea and lentil varieties,with intra-specific variation for *** long term trial aims to provide informed timing of seed regeneration for accessions in a gene bank.

Control of hydrogen sulfide emissions using autotrophic denitrification landfill biocovers:engineering applications

Hydrogen sulfide(H_(2)S)emitted from construction and demolition waste landfills has received increasing *** its unpleasant odor,longterm exposure to a very low concentration of H_(2)S can cause a public health *** the case of construction and demolition(C&D)waste landfills,where gas collection systems are not normally required,the generated H_(2)S is typically not controlled and the number of treatment processes to control H_(2)S emissions in situ is *** attractive alternative may be to use chemically or biologically active landfill covers.A few studies using various types of cover materials to attenuate H_(2)S emissions demonstrated that H_(2)S emissions can be effectively *** this study,therefore,the costs and benefits of H_(2)S-control cover systems including compost,soil amended with lime,fine concrete,and autotrophic denitrification were *** on a case-study landfill area of 0.04 km^(2),the estimated H_(2)S emissions of 80900 kg over the 15-year period and costs of active cover system components(ammonium nitrate fertilizer for autotrophic denitrification cover,lime,fine concrete,and compost),ammonium nitrate fertilizer is the most cost effective,followed by hydrated lime,fine concrete,and yard waste *** concrete and yard waste compost covers are expensive measures to control H_(2)S emissions because of the large amount of materials needed to create a *** H_(2)S emissions using fine concrete and compost is less expensive at landfills that provide on-site concrete recovery and composting facilities;however,ammonium nitrate fertilizer or hydrated lime would still be more cost effective applications.

Neurodegenerative diseases are caused by the loss of neuro- nal cells. As neurons deteriorate, a patient may experience relatively mild symptoms such as failing to name objects and people. However, with the progression of the disease, symp- toms worsen resulting in loss of independence and a sense of＂loss of oneself＂. Finally, the patient dies from a variety of complications.

First report on Guanshan Biota(Cambrian Stage 4) at the stratotype area of Wulongqing Formation in Malong County, Eastern Yunnan, China

Exceptionally preserved fossils,such as those from Cambrian Burgess Shale-type fossil-Lagerstatten are critical because of their unique contributions to knowledge of the phylogenetic radiation and palaeoecological expansion of metazoans during the Cambrian ***,these deposits provide information that is usually unobtainable from shelly and skeletonized fossils *** Guanshan Biota(Cambrian Series 2,Stage 4)in the Yunnan Province of South China,has produced abundant and diverse,exquisitely preserved fossils that often retain soft tissues and *** date,most fossils from the Guanshan Biota have been collected from localities such as Gaoloufang and Gangtoucun,which have become inaccessible due to new urban expansions and constructions of residential *** we present the first report of soft bodied fossils from a new section at Kanfuqing,close to the Wulongqing village in Malong County,approximately 3 km east of the Wulongqing Formation stratotype *** retain soft morphology,and include brachiopods with delicate marginal setae,priapulids with well-preserved sclerites and vetulicolians with entire sections of *** addition,this fauna includes rare occurrences of trilobites preserved with soft tissues replicated as pyrite pseudomorphs after *** discovery represents an important palaeogeographical extension of soft-bodied fossils of the Guanshan fauna to the east of the Xiaojiang Fault(related to Tsinning tectonic movements ca.700 Ma).The fauna from the new Kanfuqing section is similar to that reported from the Wulongqing Formation west of the Xiaojiang Fault,and thus has significant implications for early Cambrian palaeogeography,faunal successions and palaeoenvironments of eastern Yunnan.

REDUCING ROAD SALT APPLICATION BY CONSIDERING WINTER MAINTENANCE NEEDS IN PARKING LOT DESIGN

INTRODUCTION Winter snow and ice can have a significant impact on our mobility,whether on foot or by *** plowing,arguably the greatest tool in combating snow and ice is *** most commonly used salt for winter maintenance is Sodium Chloride(NaCl),the same salt used in food and water softeners,is applied to roads,sidewalks,and parking lots as it is an effective deicer when temperatures are between 0℃ and-12℃.Studies have shown that deicing with salt reduces accidents by 88%and injuries by 85%(Salt Institute 2017).The effectiveness of road salt,as well as its relative affordability,means that as much as four million tonnes may be applied annually in Canada for deicing(Environment Canada 2012).However,while salt is relatively inexpensive to purchase,there are a number of external costs that are becoming increasingly *** include corrosion of vehicles and infrastructure like concrete,bridges,and water mains;damage and staining to the interior and exterior of buildings;impacts to roadside vegetation and soils;and the contamination of fresh *** fact,the environmental impacts are such that it prompted Environment Canada to propose that winter salt be considered a toxic substance primarily due to the quantity that is applied annually(Environment Canada 2001).The Lake Simcoe watershed,approximately 3,400km2 in size,is situated just 20km north of Toronto,Ontario,with the southern portion of the watershed being considered part of the Greater Toronto Area(GTA),the most populous metropolitan area in *** part of the GTA,the Lake Simcoe watershed has experienced and continues to experience considerable growth,and with this growth comes an increase in the amount of impervious surfaces requiring winter ***,chloride has been showing a strong increasing trend in the urban creeks and in Lake Simcoe itself over the last 30 *** rural creeks are showing an increasing trend,albeit not as severe,nor are the concentrations of chloride reac
