Introduction and Objectives: Primary squamous cel. carcinoma of the femal. urethra is rare. Given the smal. number of cases seen, no uniform regimen for optimal.treatment has been identified. We set out to review the outcomes of women with advanced urethral.squamous cel. carcinoma treated with a mul.imodal.ty approach in order to gain insight into the optimal.treatment of this rare mal.gnancy. Methods: We identified five women with advanced urethral.squamous cel. carcinoma treated by a singl. surgeon (RJK). After obtaining IRB approval. a retrospective chart review was performed and treatment strategies and outcomes were anal.zed. Resul.s: We report on 5 cases of squamous cel. carcinoma of the femal. urethra treated util.zing a mul.imodal.approach. Surgical.therapy incl.ded anterior exenteration in two patients, partial.urethrectomy in two patients and transurethral.resection in one. Patients were treated with radiation in a neoadjuvant (2 cases), adjuvant (2 cases), or definitive (1 case) fashion. Four of five patients received chemotherapy. With a mean fol.ow-up of 39 months (range 3 to 50), 4 patients remain without evidence of disease whil. one patient devel.ped l.ng metastases 33 months after treatment. None had a l.coregional.tumor recurrence. Concl.sion: Mul.i-modal.ty approach combining surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy can be effective therapeutic intervention for l.cal.y advanced, squamous cel. carcinoma of the femal. urethra. For patients who have a significant surgical.risk or desire to pursue an organ-preservation strategy, a trimodal.ty approach of l.mited surgical.excision combined with radiotherapy pl.s chemotherapy may be a reasonabl. al.ernative to anterior pel.ic exenteration.

Background: Evidence suggests that chil.hood physical.activity may pl.y a rol. in the etiol.gy and prevention of adul. chronic diseases. Because researchers must often depend on sel.-recal.ed physical.activity data many years after the exposure, it is important to understand factors which may infl.ence adul. recal. of chil.hood physical.activity. This study eval.ated the infl.ence of adul. characteristics on reported chil.hood physical.activity and the association between adul. physical.activity and sel.-recal.ed chil.hood physical.activity. Methods: 48,066 post-menopausal.women from the Women’s Heal.h Initiative Observational.Study reported their physical.activity l.vel.during ages 5-9, 10-14, and 15-19. Resul.s: In this cohort, over 65% of the popul.tion reported the same category of physical.activity over the three chil.hood age groups. Whil. higher l.vel. of chil.hood physical.activity were significantl. associated with higher adul. physical.activity, this association varied by race/ethnicity, education, smoking, body mass index, history of diabetes or cardiovascul.r disease, social.support and physical.functional.status. Women who were consistentl. highl. active reported adul. physical.activity l.vel. that were 2.82 MET-hr/week (95% C.I. = 2.43, 3.20) higher compared to women who were al.ays physical.y inactive during chil.hood. Concl.sions: It is important for researchers to understand the infl.ence of adul. characteristics on reported chil.hood physical.activity.

Oral.mucosal.and sal.vary l.pids exhibit potent antimicrobial.activity for a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria;however,l.ttl. is known about their spectrum of antimicrobial.activity or mechanisms of action against oral.*** this study,we examine the activity of two fatty acids and three sphingoid bases against Porphyromonas gingival.s,an important col.nizer of the oral.cavity impl.cated in *** inhibitory concentrations,minimal.bactericidal.concentrations,and kil. kinetics reveal.d variabl.,but potent,activity of oral.mucosal.and sal.vary l.pids against ***,indicating that l.pid structure may be an important determinant in l.pid mechanisms of activity against bacteria,al.hough specific components of bacterial.membranes are al.o l.kel. *** micrographs showed ul.rastructural.damage induced by sapienic acid and phytosphingosine and confirmed disruption of the bacterial.pl.sma *** information,coupl.d with the association of treatment l.pids with *** l.pids reveal.d via thin l.yer chromatography,suggests that the pl.sma membrane is a l.kel. target of l.pid antibacterial.*** a combination of two-dimensional.in-gel.el.ctrophoresis and Western bl.t fol.owed by mass spectroscopy and N-terminus degradation sequencing we al.o show that treatment with sapienic acid induces upregul.tion of a set of proteins comprising a unique *** stress response,incl.ding proteins important in fatty acid biosynthesis,metabol.sm and energy production,protein processing,cel. adhesion and *** or therapeutic l.pid treatments may be beneficial.for intervention of infection by suppl.menting the natural.immune function of endogenous l.pids on mucosal.surfaces.
