Obesity is a disease that has become an epidemic in economically developed countries,and manifests itself at increasing rates in economically developing *** is associated with a variety of comorbidities,such as metabolic disease,diabetes,cardiovascular diseases,and musculoskeletal disorders,all resulting in tremendous costs to health care systems around the world,a reduced capacity for work,and reduced quality of life for people with obesity,coupled with physical inactivity,thereby producing a vicious circle of inactivity-induced diseases that enhances obesity.

Online publication and online reading are gradually becoming routine for scientists and students. Most researchers now follow the scientific development in their expertise area through PubMed, Google Scholar, E-alert and Faculty 1000, etc. This in turn will bring changes to the way of scientific publishing. In JIPB＇s case, we have seen a sharp increase of the number of downloads and online subscriptions during the last couple of years, compared to a rather stable hardcopy subscription rate for the same period.

According to the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, wanning of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. In the Northern Hemisphere, 1983- 2012 was likely the wannest 30-year period of the last 1,400 years （IPCC 2013）. Although some evidence for ecological change associated with recent warming is available from all biomes, general assessments of species＇ responses to climate change remain associated with great uncertainty （Parmesan, 2006; Post et al., 2009b）.

The high prevalence of childhood obesity, evident globally in the past decade, is partly due to low physical activity (PA).1 Obesity and low cardiovascular fitness in children may increase the risk of hypertension and hypercholesterolemia during childhood and may contribute to the development of chronic diseases in adulthood, such as hypertension and diabetes. 2 Participating in regular PA plays a significant role in the prevention of and decrease in childhood obesity and chronic diseases, thereby contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases later in adulthood.

The 2011 JIPB editorial Board Meeting, which coincided with the 2011 International Symposium on Integrative Plant Biology, was held at Lanzhou University, China, on August 26, 2011. Over thirty editors were in attendance for this extremely productive event （Figure 1）. The symposium, jointly organized by JIPB, Lanzhou University and four Chinese societies involved in plant science research, the Chinese Society for Cell Biology, Botanical Society of China, Genetics Society of China, and Chinese Society for Plant Physiology, drew nearly 400 participants from all over China and abroad.
