Fibroblast growth factor 21(FGF21)was originally identified as an important meta-bolic regulator which plays a crucial physiological role in regulating a variety of metabolic pa-rameters through the metabolic network.As a novel multifunctional endocrine growth factor,the role of FGF21 in the metabolic network warrants extensive exploration.This insight was obtained from the observation that the FGF21-dependent mechanism that regulates lipid metabolism,glycogen transformation,and biological effectiveness occurs through the coordi-nated participation of the liver,adipose tissue,central nervous system,and sympathetic nerves.This review focuses on the role of FGF21-uncoupling protein 1(UCP1)signaling in lipid metabolism and how FGF21 alleviates non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).Additionally,this review reveals the mechanism by which FGF21 governs glucolipid metabolism.Recent research on the role of FGF21 in the metabolic network has mostly focused on the crucial pathway of glucolipid metabolism.FGF21 has been shown to have multiple regulatory roles in the metabolic network.Since an adequate understanding of the concrete regulatory path-ways of FGF21 in the metabolic network has not been attained,this review sheds new light on the metabolic mechanisms of FGF21,explores how FGF21 engages different tissues and organs,and lays a theoretical foundation for future in-depth research on FGF21-targeted treatment of metabolic diseases.

Mitochondria play an essential role in neural function,such as supporting normal energy metabolism,regulating reactive oxygen species,buffering physiological calcium loads,and maintaining the balance of morphology,subcellular distribution,and overall health through mitochondrial dynamics.Given the recent technological advances in the assessment of mitochondrial structure and functions,mitochondrial dysfunction has been regarded as the early and key pathophysiological mechanism of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,Huntington’s disease,mild cognitive impairment,and postoperative cognitive dysfunction.This review will focus on the recent advances in mitochondrial medicine and research methodology in the field of cognitive sciences,from the perspectives of energy metabolism,oxidative stress,calcium homeostasis,and mitochondrial dynamics(including fission-fusion,transport,and mitophagy).

The Schrodinger cat state produced differently in two directions is anticipated to be a critical quantum resource in quantum information technologies.By exploring the interplay between quantum nonreciprocity and topology in a one-dimensional microcavity array,we obtain the Schrodinger cat state(a pure quantum state)in a chosen direction at the edge cavity,whereas a classical state in the other direction.This nonreciprocal generation of the cat state originates from the topologically protected chiralitymode excitation in the nontrivial phase,but in the trivial phase,the nonreciprocal generation of cat state vanishes.Thus,our proposal is switchable by tuning the parameters so that a topological phase transition occurs.Moreover,the obtained cat state has nonreciprocal high fidelity,nonclassicality,and quantum coherence,which are sufficient to be used in various one-way quantum technologies,e.g.,invisible quantum sensing,noise-tolerant quantum computing,and chiral quantum networks.Our work provides a general approach to control quantum nonreciprocities with the topological effect,which substantially broadens the fields of nonreciprocal photonics and topological physics.

Distortion-aware beamforming design for multi-beam satellite communications with nonlinear power amplifiers

Hardware components can cause different impairments, including power amplifier(PA) nonlinearities, which inevitably impact the system performance of satellite communications(SATCOM). In this work, we consider a multi-beam SATCOM downlink system and investigate the distortion-aware beamforming scheme with the characteristics of PA non-linearities. Notably, we aim to maximize the resource efficiency(RE), defined as the weighted sum of energy efficiency(EE) with spectral efficiency(SE), to obtain a flexible EE-SE tradeoff while accounting for the characteristics of PA distortion and the total power constraints.Given that the optimization objective is a sum of ratios and the high non-convexity involved in constraints,we propose an efficient approach that exploits the quadratic transformation, the Lagrange multiplier method,and the gradient ascent approach to handle this issue. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the distortion-aware beamforming approach in achieving the EE-SE tradeoff and exhibit a substantial RE performance gain over the conventional approach with ideal linear PAs assumed at the satellite transmitters.

A novel control scheme is presented to eliminate the negative effects of communication disturbances,which introduces active disturbance rejection control(ADRC)in the control strategy design to achieve the objectives of the restoration of the bus voltage and the sharing of the power even in the presence of disturbances and delays in communication.Simultaneously,its dynamic disturbance decoupling feature is used to realise the decoupling between power and voltage,so that the proposed controller only exchanges power information with its neighbours,reducing the communication burden and simplifying control structure.The control performance of the strategy is verified by employing steady-state analysis.The impact of controller parameters is studied by establishing a small signal model.Finally,both simulation cases and experimental tests prove the feasibility of this scheme.

Lung cancer produces a high incidence of malignant tumors.There have been many studies on lung cancer using mass spectrometry(MS)technologies.However,most studies have focused on humoral samples.In this work,26 pairs of tissue samples(tumor vs.para-tumor)from patients with lung cancer were analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem MS(LC-MS/MS)with data-independent acquisition mode.In total,3152 proteins were quantified from tissue samples with high confidence,including 189 up-regulated and 522 down-regulated proteins(tumor vs.para-tumor).In addition,79 and 690 proteins were identified only in para-cancerous samples and cancerous samples,respectively.The results from bio-informatics tools indicated that altered proteins like PEBP1,HRG and LYZ could be ideal reservoirs for screening the potential biomarkers for lung cancer.It is believed these tissue-specific proteomics results will assist in the studies of lung cancer.

The challenge of high temperatures in deep mining remains harmful to the health of workers and their production efficiency The addition of phase change materials (PCMs) to filling slurry and the use of the cold storage function of these materials to reduce downhole temperatures is an effective approach to alleviate the aforementioned problem.Paraffin–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM was prepared in the laboratory.The composition,phase change latent heat,thermal conductivity,and cemented tailing backfill (CTB) compressive strength of the new material were studied.The heat transfer characteristics and endothermic effect of the PCM were simulated using Fluent software.The results showed the following:(1) The new paraffin–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM improved the thermal conductivity of native paraffin while avoiding the water solubility of CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O.(2) The calculation formula of the thermal conductivity of CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O combined with paraffin was deduced,and the reasons were explained in principle.(3) The“enthalpy–mass scale model”was applied to calculate the phase change latent heat of nonreactive composite PCMs.(4)The addition of the paraffin–CaCl_(2)·6H_(2)O composite PCM reduced the CTB strength but increased its heat absorption capacity.This research can give a theoretical foundation for the use of heat storage backfill in green mines.

Interfacial water molecules are the most important participants in the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).Hence,understanding the behavior and role that interfacial water plays will ultimately reveal the HER mechanism.Unfortunately,investigating interfacial water is extremely challenging owing to the interference caused by bulk water molecules and complexity of the interfacial environment.Here,the behaviors of interfacial water in different cationic electrolytes on Pd surfaces were investigated by the electrochemistry,in situ core-shell nanostructure enhanced Raman spectroscopy and theoretical simulation techniques.Direct spectral evidence reveals a red shift in the frequency and a decrease in the intensity of interfacial water as the potential is shifted in the positively direction.When comparing the different cation electrolyte systems at a given potential,the frequency of the interfacial water peak increases in the specified order:li+de further enhancing the HER performance.Therefore,local cation tuning strategies can be used to improve the HER performance by optimizing the interfacial water structure.
