This review shows the importance of WO_(3)photoanode as a potentially low-cost,efficient,stable,and photoactive material for light-driven water *** such,this man.s.ript aims to review the most recent publications regarding the strategies to improve the phoelectroactivity of WO_(3)films for water *** addition,this review aims to graphically highlight and discuss the general trendin.s.of the photocurrent density response and stability test of the recent outstanding studies in the literature for photoelectrochemical water splitting *** strategies covered in this review will not only concern the WO_(3)morphology and crystal plane growth,but also the many arrangemen.s.possibilities to improve the WO_(3)efficiency for water photoelectrooxidation.s.ch as defect engineering based on oxygen vacancies,doping,decorations,and homo and *** these strategies are compared by the photocurrent density results and by the stability of these *** best results in this sense were observed in cases where the use of heterojunction was applied together with a desired morphology and crystal plane of the WO_(3)***,the modifications that caused a decrease in the photocurrent density reaching values that are even lower than the pure WO_(3)were also *** this way,this review inten.s.to improve the knowledge about the synthesis and design of WO_(3)photoanodes to further obtain an efficient photocatalyst to minimize the recombination losses or losses across the interfaces and improve the photoelectroactivity for water splitting in the large-scale application.

Unpaved rural roads as source areas of sediment in a watershed of the Brazilian.s.mi-arid region

Approximately 80% of the road network in Brazil is unpaved and shows evidences of a high erosion potential. In the semi-arid Caatinga Biome in the northeast of the country, a monitoring programme has been done for two years in order to analyze runoff and sediment production from unpaved rural roadways and from embankmen.s. sediment production ranged from 0.30 to 0.92 Mg/ha yr, higher than in undisturbed areas, but generally lower than that reported for unpaved roads in other regions. However,this is a semi-arid area with low rainfall and runoff and, hence, with a limited hydrological connectivity and sediment production. sediment production on an embankment with no vegetation was around ten times higher than on an embankment with vegetation. On the road surface, annual sediment production(normalized for gradient) in a section with traffic was three times higher than for a road surface without traffic. In addition, even.s.that occurred after roadway maintenance activities generated peaks of sediment concentration of over 5000 mg/L. These results suggest that sediment production from roads and embankmen.s.with bare surfaces is at least one order of magnitude higher than in undisturbed catchment areas. Maintenance activity and vehicle traffic contribute to an increase in.s.diment availability and impact on the sediment concentration, but less intensely on.s.diment loads, which depend on the runoff magnitude of the even.s.occurring after roadway maintenance. It was also found that the natural vegetation of the semi-arid region potentially captures sediment on roadway embankmen.s. thereby playing an important role in breaking connectivity between the sediment flow from unpaved roads and the natural drainage system of the catchment.

Brazilian industry produces huge amoun.s.of tannery sludge as residues,which is often disposed by landfilling or land ***,consecutive amendment of such composted industrial wastes may cause shifts in.s.il microbial biomass(sMB) and enzyme *** study aimed to evaluate sMB and enzyme activity after 3-year consecutive composted tannery sludge(CTs) amendment in tropical sandy *** amoun.s.of CTs(0.0,2.5,5.0,10.0,and 20.0 t ha^(-1)) were applied to a sandy *** C and n conten.s.of sMB,basal and substrate-induced respiration,respiratory quotient(qCO_2),and enzyme activities were determined in the soil samples collected after CTs amendment for 60 d at the third *** 3 years,significant changes were found in.s.il microbial properties in response to different CTs amoun.s.*** organic matter and Cr conten.s.significantly increased with increasing CTs *** and soil respiration peaked following amendment with 10.0 and 20.0 t ha-1 of CTs,respectively,while qCO_2was not significantly affected by CTs ***,soil enzyme activity decreased significantly with increasing CTs *** CTs amendment for 3 years showed inconsistent and contrasting effects on.s.B and enzyme *** decrease in.s.il enzyme activities was proportional to a substantial increase in.s.il Cr concentration,with the latter exceeding the permitted concentrations by more than ***,our results suggest that a maximum CTs quantity of 5.0 t ha^(-1) can be applied annually to tropical sandy soil,without causing potential risks to sMB and enzyme activity.

Do vegetative and reproductive phenophases of deciduous tropical species respond similarly to rainfall pulses?

deciduous trees with high-density wood that occur in dry seasonal tropical regions respond to rainfall seasonality with synchrony in phenophases. However, they may exhibit interannual differences in.s.nchrony and intensity of phenophases, as strategy for large variations in duration and intensity of rainfall pulses. nevertheless, it remains unknown how phenophases of deciduous trees of the Brazilian.s.mi-arid region respond to rainfall variations. The phenology of Cordia oncocalyx was monitored in deciduous thorny woodland （Caatinga）, from April 2009 to March 2011, and was correlated with rainfall, soil humidity, temperature, and photoperiod. The rainy years 2009 and 2011 exhibited higher duration of rainfall pulses and lower frequency of interpulses, but in 2010 pulse duration and total rainfall were lower. Circular statistics showed leaf flush followed by flowering and fruiting in the rainy season, and leaf fall and seed dispersal in the dry season.

Granite-gneiss rock outcrop inselbergs are ancient stable ecosystems with old,climaticallybuffered infertile lan.s.apes(OCBILs).Although inselbergs provide key ecosystem services,little is done for their conservation and,so far,a lot of their unknown evolutionary history has already been lost by human *** a fine-scale approach,here we tested if habitat and environmental filtering(the inselberg’s harshn.s.)affect the evolutionary diversity of an Atlantic Forest inselberg in *** recorded all trees with a diameter at breast height≥5cm in 20 plots in four habitat types(total sampled area of 0.8 hectares),from highest to lowest:island,hillside,foothill,and semideciduous forest(matrix).We also collected soil samples for chemical,textural and physical soil *** fitted linear models to test the effects of soil and habitat on plotlevel metrics of phylogenetic diversity and structure,lineage diversity,phylogeneticβ-diversity,and evolutionary *** found that the upper inselberg habitats contain a distinct set of ancient,closely related,harsh-tolerant lineages,as well as a subset of lineages that persist under harsh conditions with a certain degree of water *** inferior inselberg habitats harbor higher lineage diversity than expected by *** strongly predicted evolutionary *** concluded that soil depth,slope,nutrien.s.and texture(environmental filtering)and habitat types and topography(habitat filtering)shape the evolutionary history contained in fine-scale inselberg habitats,which should encourage the conservation of these ancient ecosystems.

Magnetic susceptibility of Al_2RE compoun.s.in crystal and liquid states

Magnetic susceptibility of Al2RE （RE=Y, Ce, sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb） compoun.s.was studied experimentally in wide temperature （T=290–2000 K） and field （B=0.3–1.3 T） intervals. The abnormal increase in.s.sceptibility beginning above the melting point was fixed for all the compositions. The values for the effective magnetic momen.s.per RE atoms in these compoun.s.were found to be smaller than the values typical for free ions RE3＋. The results were discussed in.s.pposition of the directed bon.s.between aluminum and rare-earth atoms.

Performance index: An expeditious tool to screen for improved drought resistance in the Lathyrus genus

some species of the Lathyrus gen.s.are among the most promising crops for marginal lan.s. with high resilience to drought, flood, and fungal diseases, combined with high yields and seed nutritional value. However, lack of knowledge on the mechan.s.s underlying its outstanding performance and methodologies to identify elite genotypes has hampered its proper use in breeding. Chlorophyl a fast fluorescence transient （JIP test）, was used to evaluate water deficit （WD） resistance in Lathyrus gen.s. Our results reveal unaltered photochemical values for al studied genotypes showing resistance to mild WD. Under severe WD, two Lathyrus sativus genotypes showed remarkable resilience maintaining the photochemical efficiency, contrary to other genotypes studied. Performance index （PIABs） is the best parameter to screen genotypes with improved performance and grain production under WD. Moreover, we found that JIP indices are good indicators of genotypic grain production under WD. Quantum yield of electron transport （wEo） and efficiency with which＆trapped excitons can move electrons further than QA （c0） revealed as important traits related to improved photosyn-thetic performance and should be exploited in future Lathyrus germplasm improvemen.s. The JIP test herein described showed to be an expeditious tool to screen and to identify elite genotypes with improved drought resistance.
