Insulin is a key hormone for the regulation of metabolism in *** is produced by pancreatic islet cells in response to elevated glucose levels and leads to the uptake of glucose by tissues such as liver and adipose tissue to store *** also has additional functions in regulating *** work has shown that the proglucagon gene,which encodes hormones counter regulating insulin,is duplicated in teleost fish,and that the peptide hormones encoded by these genes have diversified in function.I sought to determine whether similar processes have occurred to insulin genes in these *** of fish genomes revealed an unexpected diversity of insulin genes.A triplication of the insulin gene occurred at the origin of teleost fish,however one of these three genes,insc,has been lost in most teleost fish *** two other insulin genes,insa and insb,have been retained but show differing levels of selective constraint suggesting that they might have diversified in ***,a duplicate copy of the insa gene,which I named insab,is found in many *** coding sequenee encoded by insab genes is under weak selective constraint,with its predicted protein sequences losing their potential to be processed into a two-peptide ***,these sequences have retained perfectly conserved cystine residues,suggesting that they maintain insulin's three-dimensional structure and therefore might modulate the processing and secretion of insulin produced by the other genes.

Rice is one of the most widely cultivated cereals in the world, and its aroma is increasingly in demand. With the advancement of research, a major rice flavor gene has been identified on rice chromosome 8. It encodes non-functional betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase leading to the accumulation of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline which is the major olfactory compound that confers the fragrant character to rice. The aroma of rice is considered a special trait of enormous economic importance that determines the prime price in world trade. To satisfy the needs of the population and reduce rice imports into Benin, we conducted this study to identify aromatic rice accessions grown in Benin. Seventy-two rice accessions collected across Benin were PCR amplified with three SSR markers Rm 7049, Aro 7, and Rm 223, linked to the fgr (fragrance of rice) aroma gene. molecular analysis revealed that 12 of the 72 accessions, namely Bagou 19, Bagou 22, Tchaka 34, Foun 15, Tchaka 41, Nana 32, Kan 61, Kung 69, Kung 67, Bagou 20, Agbab 101 and Koum 55 possess the fgr gene and can be considered as aromatic rice accessions. A sensory phenotypic test using KOH was carried out on rice accessions carrying fgr gene. Of the twelve positives, only one had the smell of aromatic rice, like the Azucena control. These results show that Benin also has aromatic rice varieties that can be sold on national and international markets.

Introduction In Brazil,approximately 5%are born with a congenital disorder,potentially fatal without *** study aims to evaluate the relationship between gastrointestinal congenital malformation(GICm)mortality,health indicators,and socioeconomic factors in *** GICm admissions(Q39-Q45)between 2012 and 2019 were collected using national *** demographics,socioeconomic factors,clinical management,outcomes,and the healthcare workforce density were also accounted *** Surgical Workforce density and the number of neonatal intensive care units in a region were extracted from national datasets and combined to create a clinical index termed'NeoSurg'.Socioeconomic variables were combined to create a socioeconomic index termed SocEcon'.Simple linear regression was used to investigate if the temporal changes of both indexes were *** correlation between mortality and the different indicators in Brazil was evaluated using Pearson's correlation *** Over 8 years,Brazil recorded 12804 GICm *** Southeast led with 6147 cases,followed by the Northeast(2660),South(1727),North(1427),and midwest(843).The North and Northeast reported the highest mortality,lowest NeoSurg,and SocEcon Index ***,mortality rates declined across regions from 7.7%(2012)to 3.9%(2019),a 51.7%*** North and midwest experienced the most substantial reductions,at 63%and 75%,*** significantly correlated with the indexes in nearly all regions(pminants of health and GICm mortality in Brazil,using two novel indexes in the pediatric *** findings provide an opportunity to rethink and discuss new indicators that could enhance our understanding of our country and could lead to the development of necessary solutions to tackle existing challenges in Brazil and globally.

most studies that have examined mercury （Hg） contamination of fish have focused on game species feeding near the top of the food web, while studies that examine forage fish that feed near the base of the food web are rare. We conducted a survey of Hg contamination in three species of forage fish, brook silverside （Labidesthes sicculus）, threadfin shad （Dorosoma petenense） and gizzard shad （Dorosoma cepedianum）, from Caddo Lake, Texas, USA and found species-specific differences in Hg concentrations. We examined total length, age, trophic position （determined using δ15N）, and growth rate of forage fish as factors that could have influenced within-and between-species differences in Hg concentration. Total length and age were the best predictors of within-species differences in Hg concentration. Between-species differences in Hg concentrations were most strongly influenced by trophic position.

There have been many chapters written about macrophage *** chapters generally focus on the role of macrophages in orchestrating immune responses by highlighting the T-cell-derived cytokines that shape these polarizing *** bias toward immunity is understandable,given the importance of macrophages to host ***,macrophages are ubiquitous and are involved in many different cellular processes,and describing them as immune cells is undoubtedly an *** disregards their important roles in development,tissue remodeling,wound healing,angiogenesis,and metabolism,to name just a few *** this chapter,we propose that macrophages function as transducers in the *** to Wikipedia,WA transducer is a device that converts energy from one form to another.^The word transducer is a term used to describe both the"sensor,which can interpret a wide range of energy forms,and the"actuator,which can switch voltages or currents to affect the *** are able to sense a seemingly endless variety of inputs from their environment and transduce these inputs into a variety of different response ***,rather than functioning as immune cells,they should be considered more broadly as cellular transducers that interpret microenvironmental changes and actuate vital tissue *** this chapter,we will describe some of the sensory stimuli that macrophages perceive and the responses they make to these stimuli to achieve their prime directive,which is the maintenance of homeostasis.

Rubber latex is an important economic resource. However, the residues from its harvesting are thrown away, even though they contain lipids that can be recycled. This recovery of the residues from the bottom of the cup requires first and foremost their characterization. The aim of this study is therefore to determine the main physical and chemical characteristics of rubber latex cup bottom oil. Oil’s physical parameters determination shows that it has a density of 951 kg∙m−3, a kinematic viscosity of 48.57 cSt and a water content of 0.0845%. Chemical parameters, meanwhile, indicate that this cup bottom residue has a fat content of 95.96%, an acid number of 2.805 mg KOH/g and an iodine number of 92.42 g I2/100g. Therefore, rubber latex cup bottom oil can be used in the formulation of biofuels, biolubricants, paints, varnishes, alkyd resins, polishing oils, soaps, and insecticides.

Risk Factors for mortality in Acute Kidney Injury in Intensive Care Units in Togo

Context: Acute kidney injury (AKI) in intensive care unit (ICU) is common and associated with very high mortality. In Togo, a tropical country with limited resources and only one nephrology department in the north, acute kidney injury seems to be a real tragedy with high mortality. Aims: to determine risk factors for mortality in acute kidney injury in the intensive care units. methods and material: We made a multicentric cross sectional study during 6 months in the four referral centers in northern Togo. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with mortality. Data were analyzed using RStudio 2023.04.1. Results: A total of 12.6% of patients admitted to intensive care had presented with AKI. The mean age was 49.6 ± 17.9. The sex ratio (m/F) was 2.1. Community-acquired AKI was in the majority (67.7%). Oligo anuria was the most frequent functional sign (38.4%). In our series, 81.6% of patients were in KDIGO stages 2 to 3. AKI was organic in 56.2% of cases. mortality was 44.3%. In multivariate analysis, the main factors predictive of death were: respiratory distress (OR = 2.36;p Conclusions: Acute kidney injury in intensive care is common in northern Togo, and mortality is high. Identification of associated factors should help anticipate prognosis.

Dear Editor,Dengue is a worldwide zoonosis,transmitted by mosquitoes and highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical *** recent years,its incidence has increased with a massive healthcare burden worldwide[1]and recent climatic changes have expanded the geographic range of the insect vector with described outbreaks in Europe.[2]most patients present pauci-symptomatic infections,but some patients could present severe manifestations with high reported mortality[[3],[4],[5]]and no specific *** bleeding,hemodynamic failure and various organ damage(cardiac,renal,neurological,and hepatic)are described in severe dengue(SD)patients.[5]In the future,intensivists worldwide will be increasingly treating SD and the spectrum of severe organ impairment should be well known.
