Association between baseline levels of muscular strength and risk of stroke in later life:The Cooper Center Longitudinal Study

Background:Muscular strength is an important component of physical *** evaluated the relationship between baseline muscular strength and risk of stroke among adults who were aged≥65 years during ***:We included 7627 healthy adults(mean age=43.9 years,86.0%male)underwent a baseline physical examination between 1980 and *** strength was determined by 1-repetition maximum measures for bench press and leg press and categorized into age-and sex-specific tertiles for each *** fitness(CRF)was assessed via a maximal treadmill exercise *** enrolled in fee-for-service Medicare from 1999 to 2019 were included in the *** between baseline strength and stroke outcomes were estimated using a modified Cox proportional hazards *** a secondary analysis,we examined stroke risk by categories of CRF where Quintile 1=low,Quintiles 2-3=moderate,and Quintiles 4-5=high CRF based on age and ***:After 70,072 person-years of Medicare follow-up,there were 1211 earliest indications of incident *** multivariable analyses,the hazard ratio(95%confidence interval(95%CI))for stroke across bench press categories were 1.0(referent),0.96(0.83-1.11),and 0.89(0.77-1.04),respectively(p trend=0.14).The trend across categories of leg press was also non-significant(p trend=0.79).Adjusted hazard ratio(95%CI)for stroke across ordered CRF categories were 1.0(referent),0.90(0.71-1.13),and 0.72(0.57-0.92)(p trend<0.01).Conclusion:While meeting public health guidelines for muscular strengthening activities is likely to improve muscular strength as well as many health outcomes in older adults,performing such activities may not be helpful in preventing ***,meeting guidelines for aerobic activity is likely to improve CRF and lower stroke risk.

Background:We examined the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF) and white blood cell count(WBC) with mortality ***: A total of 52,056 apparently healthy adults completed a comprehensive health examination,including a maximal treadmill test and blood chemistry *** was categorized as high,moderate,or low by age and sex;WBC was categorized as sex-specific ***:During 17.8± 9.5 years(mean± SD) of follow-up,a total of 4088 deaths *** regressed jointly,significantly decreased allcause mortality across CRF categories was observed within each quartile of WBC in *** WBC Quartile 1,all-cause mortality hazard ratios(HRs) with a 95% confidence interval(95%CI) were 1.0(referent),1.29(95%CI:1.06-1.57),and 2.03(95%CI:1.42-2.92) for high,moderate,and low CRF categories,respectively(p for trend <0.001).Similar trends were observed in the remaining 3 *** the exception of cardiovascular disease(CVD) mortality within Quartile 1(p for trend=0.743),there were also similar trends across CRF categories within WBC quartiles in men for both CVD and cancer mortality(p for trend <0.01 for all).For women,there were no significant trends across CRF categories for mortality outcomes within Quartiles ***,we observed significantly decreased all-cause mortality across CRF categories within WBC Quartile 4(HR=1.05(95%CI:0.76-1.44),HR=1.63(95%CI:1.20-2.21),and HR=1.87(95%CI:1.29-2.69) for high,moderate,and low CRF,respectively(p for trend=0.002)).Similar trends in women were observed for CVD and cancer mortality within WBC Quartile 4 ***:There are strong joint associations between CRF,WBC,and all-cause,CVD,and cancer mortality in men;these associations are less consistent in women.

Association between axial length and toric intraocular lens rotation according to an online toric back-calculator

AIM: To assess the relationship between axial length(AL) and intraocular lens(IOL) rotation among eyes receiving a toric IOL and subsequently entered into an online toric back-calculator ***: Retrospective analysis of data collected online via ***, a freely available online toric back-calculator where surgeons enter pre-and postoperative information to help manage residual postoperative *** records were deemed valid with entry of AL and IOL orientation between January 2017 and March *** was determined by a difference of ≥5° between pre-operative intended IOL orientation and actual post-operative IOL *** and magnitude of rotation are presented with means and associated standard deviation(SD).Linear regression models of this association are ***: Records of 6752 eyes were included in the analysis, of which 74.8% were determined to have a rotated *** magnitude of rotation increased with each millimeter(mm) increase in AL with a mean rotation of 13.3°(SD: 12.8°) for eyes with AL 20-20.9 mm and a maximum mean rotation of 30.6°(SD: 30.3°) among eyes with AL 29-29.9 *** linear modeling demonstrated a significant association(P<0.0001) with a parameter estimate of 1.19(standard error: 0.159) and R;of ***: Analysis from an online database indicates that toric IOLs inserted into eyes with longer AL are more likely to rotate and to rotate more degrees from the target *** findings from this study are clinically relevant for surgeons implanting toric IOLs.

Modified Usability Framework for Disaster Apps:A Qualitative Thematic Analysis of User Reviews

The public has access to a range of mobile applications(apps)for ***,there has been limited academic research conducted on disaster apps and how the public perceives their *** study explores end-users'perceptions of the usability of disaster *** proposes a conceptual framework based on insights gathered from thematically analyzing online *** study identifies new usability concerns particular to disaster apps'use:(1)content relevance depends on the app's purpose and the proximate significance of the information to the hazard event's time and location;(2)app dependability affects users'perceptions of usability due to the lifesafety association of disaster apps;(3)users perceive advertisements to contribute to their cognitive load;(4)users expect apps to work efficiently without unnecessary consumption of critical phone resources;(5)appropriate audio interface can improve usability,as sounds can boost an app's alerting aspect;and,finally(6)in-app browsing may potentially enhance users'impression of the structure of a disaster *** a result,this study argues for focussed research and development on public-facing disaster *** research should consider the conceptual framework and concerns presented in this study when building design guidelines and theories for disaster apps.

Trans-scleral cyclophotocoagulation: a tale of two probes

To compare the histological effects of trans-scleral cyclophotocoagulation(TCP) performed with two different probes, the G-probe(IRIDEX Medical Instruments, Mountain View, CA, USA) and the Ciliprobe(Katalyst Surgical, Chesterfield, MO, USA). TCP was performed on two human cadaver eyes from the same corpse. The vertical meridian was marked and opposite sides were treated using either the G-probe or Ciliprobe. The first eye was treated with each probe at 2000 ms/2000 mW and the second eye at 3000 ms/1500 mW. Histological examination revealed separation and loss of the non-pigmented ciliary epithelium as well as vacuolization in all sections for both probes and settings. Changes to the non-pigmented ciliary epithelium treated at 3000 ms/1500 mW were similar between the two probes. A slightly more complete separation of the non-pigmented epithelium was noted on the Ciliprobe treated sections as compared to the G-probe treated sections in the eye treated at 2000 ms/2000 mW. Therefore, in human cadaver eyes, both the G-probe and Ciliprobe produced separation, vacuolization, and loss of the non-pigmented ciliary epithelium at two different, clinically utilized settings.
