Agroecological management of a soil-dwelling orthopteran pest in vineyards

The efficacy of different combinations of undervine and inter-row treatments for managing a soil-dwelling orthopteran pest, weta （Hemiandrus sp.）, in vineyards was investigated over 2 seasons. This insect damages vine buds, thus reducing subsequent grape yield. The undervine treatments comprised pea straw mulch, mussel shells, tick beans [Viciafaba Linn. var minor （Fab）], plastic sleeves on vine trunks （treated control） and control （no intervention）, while inter-rows contained either the existing vegetation or tick beans. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 10 replicates. Data were collected on weta densities, damage to beans and components of yield. The latter were numbers of bud laid down per vine, shoots per bud, clusters per shoot, grape bunches per vine, bunch weight and yield. The undervine treatments significantly affected all variables except the number of shoots per bud. In contrast, none of the variables was significantly affected by the inter-row treatments or their interaction with undervine treatments, apart from weta density. At the end of the experiment, weta density in the shell treatment was about 58% lower than in the control. As a result, there was about 39% significant yield increase in that treatment compared to the control. Although the undervine beans and sleeves treatments increased yield, there were no reductions in weta density. With undervine beans, the insect fed on the bean plants instead of vine buds. Thus, yield in that treatment was approximately 28% higher than in the control. These results demonstrate that simple agroecological management approaches can reduce above-ground damage by soil-dwelling insects.

Polymeric surfactants are amongst the most widespread of all polymers. In nature, proteins and polysaccharidescause self organization as a result of this surfactancy; in industry, polymeric surfactants play key roles in the food, explosivesand surface coatings sectors. The generation of useful nano- and micro-structures in films and emulsions as a result ofpolymer amphiphilicity and the application of mechanical stress is discussed. The use of X-ray and neutron small anglescattering and reflectivity to measure these structures and their dynamic properties will be described. New results on linear and dendritic polymer surfactants are presented.

Positron emission particle tracking——Application and labelling techniques

The positron emission particle tracking （PEPT） technique has been widely used in science and engineering to obtain detailed information on the motion and flow fields of fluids or granular materials in multiphase systems, for example, fluids in rock cracks, chemical reactors and food processors; dynamic behaviour of granular materials in chemical reactors, granulators, mixers, dryers, rotating kilns and ball mills. The information obtained by the PEPT technique can be used to optimise the design, operational conditions for a wide range of industrial process systems, and to evaluate modelling work. The technique is based on tracking radioactively labelled particles （up to three particles） by detecting the pairs of backto-back 511 keV γ-rays arising from annihilation of emitted positrons. It therefore involves a positron camera, location algorithms for calculating the tracer location and speed, and tracer labelling techniques. This paper will review the particle tracking technique from tracking algorithm, tracer labelling to their application.

Seismites of the Late Triassic Lockatong Formation,Pennsylvania,USA:implications for Newark Basin border fault movement

Numerous soft-sediment deformation structures(SSDS) within thin-bedded, heterolithic lacustrine shoreline deposits of the Upper Triassic Tumble Falls Member, Lockatong Formation of eastern Pennsylvania, demonstrate liquefaction, fluidization and shearing features processes affecting sediment. This study employs thin-section analysis of SSDS to interpret them as probable seismites from the Triassic-j.rassic Newark Basin. Sedimentary structures include right-lateral offset of desiccation cracks and ichnofossils, thrust,reverse, and normal faults with mm-scale offsets, horsts and grabens, lateral spreads, and single and complex multiple networks of dikes and sills and associated sedimentary volcanoes, thin mudflows on a paleosurface linked to sediment dikes, load and flame structures, ball and pillow structures, recumbent folds, and incipient breccias. Dike fill consists of mudstone, angular sedimentary clasts, sandstone margins with mudstone cores,and plastically deformed sediment fill. The SSDS indicate that Late Triassic lacustrine shoreline sediments were subj.cted to forces, probably compressive with a minimal shear component reflected in the offset of the dikes and ichnofossils, that induced liquefaction followed by fluidization and vertical movement of *** forces that altered sediment vertical stability, leading to deformation of the sediment included gravitationally unstable density gradients, vertical shear stress, and gravitational body forces. SSDS can be induced by seismic and aseismic processes. However, this unique combination of forces and resulting sedimentary structures indicate an origin by earthquake activity, likely produced by the nearby, active Newark Basin border fault system. The Lockatong Formation SSDS seismites improve our understanding via thin section analysis of the rheology and preservation potential of SSDS in lacustrine shoreline deposits, critical for the geologic history of Newark Basin, as well as the refinement for paleos

A Model System of Development Regulated by the Long-distance Transport of mRNA

BELl-like transcription factors are ubiquitous in plants and interact with KNOTTEDI-types to regulate numerous developmental processes. In potato, the RNA of several BELl-like transcription factors has been identified in phloem cells. One of these, StBEL5, and its Knox protein partner regulate tuber formation by targeting genes that control growth. RNA detection methods and grafting experiments demonstrated that StBEL5 transcripts move across a graft union to localize in stolon tips, the site of tuber induction. This movement of RNA originates in source leaf veins and petioles and is induced by a short-day photoperiod, regulated by the untranslated regions, and correlated with enhanced tuber production. Addition of the StBEL5 untranslated regions to another *** mRNA resulted in its preferential transport to stolon tips leading to increased tuber production. Upon fusion of the untranslated regions of StBEL5 to a β-glucuronidase marker, translation in tobacco protoplasts was repressed by those constructs containing the 3＇ untranslated sequence. The untranslated regions of the StBEL5 mRNA are involved in mediating its long-distance transport and in controlling translation. The 3＇ untranslated sequence contains an abundance of conserved motifs that may serve as binding motifs for RNA-binding proteins. Because of their presence in the phloem sieve tube system, their unique untranslated region sequences and their diverse RNA accumulation patterns, the family of BEL1-like RNAs from potato represents a valuable model for studying the long-distance transport of full-length mRNAs and their role in development.

Ribozymes and the mechanisms that underlie RNA catalysis

Ribozymes are widespread, and catalyze some extremely important reactions in the cell. Mechanistically most fall into one of two classes, using either metal ions or general acid-base catalysis. The nucleolytic ribozymes fall into the latter class, mostly using nucleobases. A sub-set of these use a combination of guanine base plus adenine acid to catalyze the cleavage reaction. New ribozymes are still being discovered at regular intervals and we can speculate on the potential existence of ribozymes that catalyze chemistry beyond phosphoryl transfer reactions, perhaps using small-molecule coenzymes.

Geometrically constrained isogeometric parameterizedlevel-set based topology optimization via trimmed elements

In this paper, an approach based on the fast point-in-polygon (PIP) algorithm and trimmed elements is proposed for isogeometric topology optimization (TO) with arbitrary geometric constraints. The isogeometric parameterized level-set-based TO method, which directly uses the non-uniform rational basis splines (NURBS) for both level set function (LSF) parameterization and obj.ctive function calculation, provides higher accuracy and efficiency than previous methods. The integration of trimmed elements is completed by the efficient quadrature rule that can design the quadrature points and weights for arbitrary geometric shape. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency and flexibility of the method.
