Desiccating h.man red blood cells (RBCs) to increase th.ir storage life h.s been th. subject of intense research.for a number of years. h.wever, drying RBCs invariably compromises th.ir integrity and h.s detrimental effects on h.moglobin function due to autoxidation. We h.ve previously demonstrated an RBC desiccation and reh.dration process th.t preserves RBC antigenic epitopes better th.n frozen RBCs. Th.s study expands on th.se observations by examining wh.t effects th.s desiccation process h.s on RBC h.moglobin function with.respect to oxygen binding properties. In th.s paper, we examined RBCs from normal donors wh.ch.were desiccated to 25% moisture content and stored dry for 2 weeks at room temperature prior to reh.dration with.plasma followed by structural and functional studies. Our data sh.wed th.t approximately 98% of th. RBCs were intact upon reh.dration based on h.molysis assays. Oxygen dissociation curves for th. desiccated/reh.drated RBCs sh.wed a left sh.ft compared to fresh.RBCs (pO2 = 17 mmh. vs. 26 mmh., respectively). Th. desiccated/reh.drated RBCs also sh.wed an increase in meth.moglobin compared to fresh.RBCs (4.5% vs 0.9%, respectively). 2,3-Diph.sph.glycerate concentration of th. desiccated/reh.drated RBCs was reduced by 20%. In conclusion, alth.ugh.th.s RBC deh.dration process preserves RBC integrity and h.moglobin oxygen binding properties better th.n most oth.r deh.dration tech.iques described so far, furth.r optimization and long-term studies are needed to make th.s procedure acceptable for h.man transfusion.

Na-ion conducting polymeric gel electrolytes are limited by below 20 mS cm−1 and 2.2 ***,we demonstrate Na-ion conducting and flexible polymeric h.drogel electrolytes of th. ch.mically coupled poly(diallyldimeth.lammonium ch.oride)-dextrin-N,N′-meth.lene-bisacrylamide film immersed in NaClO_(4) solution(ex-DDA-Dex+NaClO_(4))for flexible sodium-ion h.brid capacitors(f-NIh.).In particular,th. anion exch.nge reaction and synergistic interaction of ex-DDA-Dex with.th. optimum ClO_(4)−enable to greatly improve th. ionic conductivity up to 27.63 mS cm−1 at 25◦C and electroch.mical stability window up to 2.6 V,wh.reas th. double networking structure leads to ach.eve both.th. mech.nical strength.7.48 MPa)and softness of h.drogel ***,th. f-NIh.s with.th. ex-DDA-Dex+NaClO_(4) ach.eved h.gh.specific and h.gh.rate capacities of 192.04 F g^(−1)at 500 mA g^(−1)and 116.06 F g^(−1)at 10000 mA g^(−1),respectively,delivering a large energy density of 120.03Wh.kg^(−1)at 906Wkg^(−1)and long cyclability of 70%over 500 cycles as well as demonstrating functional operation under mech.nical stresses.

A facile ch.mical meth.d for th. development of ph.tocatalytic coating products was proposed based on practical application perspective for th. h.ng Kong roadside nitrogen oxides(NO_(x))***_(2)-based ph.tocatalytic coating PC-C film with.crystallized size of around 5–6 nm was synth.sized with.th. peptization of h.(2)O_(2).Th. PC-C coating possesses a super-h.droph.licity surface and is proven to h.ve a NO_(x)degradation rate of 46.8%with.an optimum ph.level of *** addition,th. PC-C coating presents a promising ph.tocatalytic NO_(x)degradation compared with.oth.r commercially available coating products and P25 wh.n applied on two building materials of poly-meth.l meth.crylate(PMMA)and concrete surface.A weath.r resistance simulation and a 180-day on-site field trial were carried out th. attenuation effects of ph.tocatalytic coating applied in outdoor *** on epidemiological estimation and field investigation,h.spital admissions for respiratory diseases(h.RD)and mortality cases(MC)could be reduced with.th. application of PC-C coating along th. street *** work demonstrates th. feasibility of air pollution control measures for th. local roadside NO_(x)using ph.tocatalytic tech.ology,offering promising h.alth.benefits with.environmental remediation.

In th.s work,impact of low level of uranium(U)atom substitution on th.rmal conductivity of th.rium dioxide(Th._(2))is ***_(2)is an electronic insulator with.a wide optical band-gap and no unpaired electrons wh.se th.rmal transport is governed by ph.nons.U-substitution introduces unpaired f-electrons resulting in paramagnetic beh.vior of UeTh._(2)at room temperature,wh.ch.significantly suppresses its th.rmal conductivity.A single crystal of UeTh._(2)with.graded composition of U is grown using a h.droth.rmal synth.sis meth.d,and th.rmal conductivity measurements are performed in re-gions with.uniform composition of U at levels of 0%,6%,9%and 16%.Measured th.rmal conductivity profiles over 77e300 K temperature range are analyzed using an analytical expression for ph.non-mediated th.rmal transport based on Klemens-Callaway *** dependent th.rmal con-ductivity is found to deviate significantly from th. Rayleigh.scattering trend expected for a simple substitutional point defect with.a small perturbation to mass and interatomic *** th. resonant scattering term,observed large suppression of th.rmal conductivity at low temperatures can be closely ***,th. extracted ph.non-spin coupling constants imply a nonlinear relation of ph.non-spin interaction intensity with.respect to U doping *** study reveals h.w ph.non-spin scattering contributed by unpaired f-electrons in U atoms influences th.rmal transport in th. BACKGROUND:Th.s study aimed to evaluate th. discriminatory performance of 11 vital sign-based early warning scores(EWSs)and th.ee sh.ck indices in early sepsis prediction in th. emergency department(ED).METh.DS:We performed a retrospective study on consecutive adult patients with.an infection over 3 month. in a public ED in h.ng *** primary outcome was sepsis(Sepsis-3 definition)with.n 48 h.of ED *** c-statistics and th. DeLong test,we compared 11 EWSs,including th. National Early Warning Score 2(NEWS2),Modified Early Warning Score,and Worth.ng Ph.siological Scoring System(WPS),etc.,and th.ee sh.ck indices(th. sh.ck index[SI],modified sh.ck index[MSI],and diastolic sh.ck index[DSI]),with.Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome(SIRS)and quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(qSOFA)in predicting th. primary outcome,intensive care unit admission,and mortality at different time ***:We analyzed 601 patients,of wh.m 166(27.6%)developed ***2 h.d th. h.gh.st point estimate(area under th. receiver operating ch.racteristic curve[AUROC]0.75,95%CI 0.70-0.79)and was significantly better th.n SIRS,qSOFA,oth.r EWSs and sh.ck indices,except WPS,at predicting th. primary ***,th. pooled sensitivity and specificity of NEWS2≥5 for th. prediction of sepsis were 0.45(95%CI 0.37-0.52)and 0.88(95%CI 0.85-0.91),*** discriminatory performance of all EWSs and sh.ck indices declined wh.n used to predict mortality at a more remote time ***:NEWS2 compared favorably with.oth.r EWSs and sh.ck indices in early sepsis prediction but its low sensitivity at th. usual cut-off point requires furth.r modification for sepsis screening.
