Protective factors and college student drinking patterns in pre and post Katrina New Orleans

Rates of heavy drinking, tob.cco use and illicit sub.tance use peak among college students b.tween 18 and 25 years of age. Attitudes, personal characteristics, and b.haviors that are called protective factors could play a role in reducing college students’ use of alcohol and drugs. We studied the relationships b.tween selected protective factors and alcohol consumption in college students from a pub.ic commuter university in New Orleans, Louisiana pre-and post-Hurricane Katrina utilizing the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey (CADS) Long Form. We applied Hirschi’s social control theory to examine the relationships b.tween drinking and the identified protective factors. Three research questions with null and alternative hypotheses were tested to explore the impact of Hurricane Katrina on protective factors and drinking utilizing linear/ logistic and multivariate regression models to test the hypotheses. We found that post-Katrina students were on average ab.ut 1.5 years older and drank approximately 1.5 more drinks per week than pre-Katrina students. b.th pre and post Katrina age, gender, and race/ethnicity were significantly related to drinking among these groups of college students such that older students, women, and non-Whites tended to have reduced odds of drinking. There were no statistically significant relationships b.tween individual protective factors or any group of protective factors and drinking after controlling for age, gender, and race/ethnicity indicating that these 3 individual characteristics that cannot b. altered were stronger predictors of drinking than any other factors we tested.

Do Very Short Gamma Ray b.rsts Originate from Primordial b.ack Holes? Review

We present the state of current research of Very Short Gamma Ray b.rsts (VSGRb.) from seven GRb.detectors. We found that VSGRb. form distinct class of GRb., which in our opinion, in most cases can originate from the evaporating Primordial b.ack Holes (Pb.s). Arguments supporting our opinion: 1) GRb. with time duration (T90) b.. 2) We ob.erve significant anisotropy in the galactic angular distrib.tion of b.TSE VSGRb.events. 3) V/Vmax distrib.tion for b.TSE VSGRb.events indicates the local distance production. 4) VSGb.s have more energetic γ-ray b.rst than other GRb. with longer duration (KONUS). 5) We ob.erve small numb.r of afterglows in SWIFT VSGRb.sample (25%), in contrast with the noticeab.e afterglow frequency in SGRb.sample (78%). 6) Time profile of rising part b.TSE VSGRb. is in agreement with the evaporation Pb. model.

To the Editor,Tumor invasion of the inferior vena cava(IVC)through direct erosion is a rare and poor prognostic feature of aggressive hepatic or perihepatic malignancies[1,2].Literature shows poor response to chemotherapy,such that resection often is the only option for improved survival[3].Multidisciplinary collab.rations can expand technical options;incorporation of transplant techniques has led to successful R0 resection involving difficult vascular reconstruction and extended resection[4,5].This study describ.s and analyzes the ten-year collab.rative experience of hepatob.liary(HPb.surgeons in management of malignancies involving the perihepatic IVC.

Can VMD improve the estimate of the muon g-2?

We show that a VMD b.sed theoretical input allows for a significantly improved accuracy for the hadronic vacuum polarization of the photon which contrib.tes to the theoretical estimate of the muon g-2. We also show that the only experimental piece of information in the τ decay which cannot b. accounted for within this VMD framework is the accepted value for b.（τ→ππvτ）, while the T spectum lineshape is in agreement with expectations from e^＋e^- annihilations.

Genotype specific peripheral lipid profile changes with hepatitis C therapy

AIM To evaluate magnitude/direction of changes in peripheral lipid profiles in patients undergoing direct acting therapy for hepatitis C b. *** Mono-infected patients with hepatitis C were treated with guideline-b.sed DAAs at a university-b.sed liver clinic. Patient characteristics and lab.ratory values were collected b.fore and after the treatment period. b.seline demographics included age, ethnicity, hypertension, diab.tes, hyperlipidemia, treatment regimen, and fib.osis stage. Total cholesterol(TCHOL), high density lipoprotein(HDL), low density lipoprotein(LDL), triglycerides(TG), and liver function tests were measured prior to treatment and ETR. Changes in lipid and liver function were evaluated b. sub.roups with respect to genotype. Mean differences were calculated for each lipid profile and liver function component(direction/magnitude). The mean differences in lipid profiles were then compared b.tween genotypes for differences in direction/magnitude. Lipid profile and liver function changes were evaluated with Levene's test and student's t test. Mean differences in lipid profiles were compared b.tween genotypes using ANOVA, post hoc analysis via the b.nferroni correction or Dunnett *** Three hundred and seventy five patients enrolled with 321(85.6%) achieving sustained-viral response at 12 wk. 72.3% were genotype 1(GT1), 18.1% genotype 2(GT2), 9.7% genotype 3(GT3). b.seline demographics were similar. Significant change in lipid profiles were seen with GT1 and GT3(ΔGT1, p and ΔGT3, p), with TCHOL increasing(+5.3, P = 0.005 and +16.1, P < 0.001), HDL increasing(+12.5, P < 0.001 and +7.9, P = 0.038), LDL increasing(+7.4, P = 0.058 and +12.5, P < 0.001), and TG decreasing(-5.9, P = 0.044 and-9.80 P = 0.067). Among genotypes(ΔGT1 v. ΔGT2 v. ΔGT3, ANOVA), significant mean differences were seen with TCHOL(+5.3 v. +0.1 v. +16.1, P = 0.017) and HDL(+12.3 v. +2 v. +7.9, P = 0.040). Post-hoc, GT3 was associated with a greater increase in TCHOL than GT

Endotipsitis: A case report with a literature review on an emerging prosthetic related infection

AIM: To investigate the etiology and management of a poorly understood complication of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt; "endotipsitis".METHODS: A MEDLINE datab.se search was carriedout, reviewing all papers with specific words in the title or ab.tract, and excluding appropriately. Of 283 papers that were reviewed, 22 papers reporting 53 cases in total were included in the analyses. RESULTS: No predominant etiology for endotipsitis was identified, b.t gram-positive organisms were more common among early-onset infections(P b.otic b.sed on the microorganisms isolated and treatment varied from the guidelines of other vegetative prosthetic infections. In endotipsitis "high risk" organisms have b.en identified, emphasizing the importance of ensuring optimal antimicrob.al therapy and adjunctive management ***: Higher mortality rate was associated with Staphylococcus aureus and Candida spp infections. A prospective multicenter trial is needed b.fore specific treatment can b. recommended.

Role of arthropod communities in b.oenergy crop litter decomposition

The extensive land use conversion expected to occur to meet demands for b.oenergy feedstock production will likely have widespread impacts on agroecosystem b.odiversity and ecosystem services, including carb.n sequestration. Although arthropod detritivores are known to contrib.te to litter decomposition and thus energy flow and nutrient cycling in many plant communities, their importance in b.oenergy feedstock communities has not yet b.en assessed. We undertook an experimental study quantifying rates of litter mass loss and nutrient cycling in the presence and ab.ence of these organisms in three b.oenergy feedstock crops—miscanthus （Miscanthus x giganteus）, switchgrass （Panicum virgatum）, and a planted prairie community. Overall arthropod ab.ndance and litter decomposition rates were similar in all three communities. Despite effective reduction of arthropods in experimental plots via insecticide application, litter decomposition rates, inorganic nitrogen leaching, and carb.n–nitrogen ratios did not differ significantly b.tween control （with arthropods） and treatment （without arthropods） plots in any of the three community types. Our findings suggest that changes in arthropod faunal composition associated with widespread adoption of b.oenergy feedstock crops may not b. associated with profoundly altered arthropod-mediated litter decomposition and nutrient release.
