Controlling human platelet activation with calcium-binding nanoparticles

Human platelets aggregate at sites of blood vessel damage in response to a rise in their cytosolic calcium *** these cytosolic calcium rises would provide a method to inhibit platelet activation and prevent the unwanted blood clots that causes heart attack and *** we have predicted that calcium accumulation within the lumen of an infolded portion of the platelet plasma membrane called the open canalicular system(OCS)is essential for maintaining this cytosolic calcium *** to its nanometer dimensions of the OCS,it has been difficult to measure or interfere with the predicted luminal calcium *** we utilise iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles coated with the known calcium chelator,citrate,to create calcium-binding *** were used to assess whether an OCS calcium store plays a role in controlling the dynamics of human platelet activation and *** demonstrate that citrate-coated nanoparticles are rapidly and selectively uptaken into the OCS of activated human platelets,where they act to buffer the accumulation of calcium *** with these calcium-binding nanoparticles reduced thrombin-evoked cytosolic calcium rises,and slowed platelet aggregation and clot retraction in human *** contrast,nanoparticles that cannot bind calcium have no *** study demonstrates that the OCS acts as a key source of calcium for maintaining cytosolic calcium rises and accelerating platelet aggregation,and that calcium-binding nanoparticles targeted to the OCS could provide an anti-platelet therapy to treat patients at risk of suffering heart attacks or strokes.

Impact of the adherence to medical treatment on the main urinary metabolic disorders in patients with kidney stones

Tropical mountain ranges shape the structure of tree communities and promote highly diverse natural ***“Bosque Protector Chong on-Colonche”(BPCC),an 86,000-ha mountain formation situated on the coast of Ecuador,is biogeographically important for the region by connecting floristic elements of the wet Choco and the dry Tumbesian *** understanding of the factors that model tree and palm diversity and distribution in this mountain range are *** measured and identified all trees and palms(DBH≥10 cm)in 289 plots of0.2 ha,distributed throughout *** used generalized linear models to explain the relationship between forest diversity and structure and climatic variables(temperature,rain,aridity),and *** then used cluster and non-metric multidimensional scale(NMDS)analyses to search for distinct forest communities within the *** partition(varpart)was used to determine which predictor variables best explained these distinct forest communities.A species indicator analysis identified the species most likely to define these distinct forest ***,we carried out a niche modeling approach to identify the potential distribution of these forest communities within *** total,we identified 220 tree and palm species in our *** average number of species per plot was 17.8±5.8,ranging from 3 to 40 *** methods sorted the 289study plots into six different forest communities,three communities in the dry forest and three in the semi-humid Garúa *** and temperature,but not altitude or aridity,explained floristic *** results emphasize the high but little cataloged diversity in the lowland mountain rainforests of coastal Ecuador.

Emerging technologies such as electric vehicles,solid-state transformers,and DC transformers are implemented using the closed-loop bi-directional dual-active-bridge(DAB)*** this context,it is necessary to have average models that provide an efficient way of tuning the proportional integral(PI)compensator parameters for large-and small-signal *** present a novel small-signal model(SSM)for DAB converter with a single closed-loop PI controller and the total elimination of reactive current(IQ=0).The method applies a modulation technique for IQ=0 and introduces a composite function in the controller while reducing the original nonlinear switching model,which allows to decrease the order of the transfer function and analyze the closed-loop *** proposed SSM is analyzed using different response time,load,and DC voltage *** simulation and experimental results demonstrate the ease of implementation and effectiveness of the proposed model with respect to other SSM techniques.

Minioptical Navigation System for CT-Guided Percutaneous Liver Procedures

Purpose: To evaluate a new miniature optical navigation system for CT-guided liver interventions. Material and Methods: A two-center, prospective study was performed with four interventional radiologists. A total of 20 patients had CT-guided liver biopsy or ablation interventions utilizing the CT-Guide? navigation system (ActiViews Inc., Wakefield, MA) between July 2011 and December 2011. The navigation system consists of a self-adhesive patientsticker printed with coincident colored and radio-opaque reference markers, a miniature disposable video camera that clips on and off an interventional instrument, and software loaded on a computer to display the navigation information. The primary end point was the frequency of a satisfactory instrument position for the intended intervention. Results: The cohort consisted of 13 males and 7 females with an average age of 63.1 years (range of 38 to 80). Most of the patients, 70%, underwent CT-guided liver biopsy while the remainder had CT-guided ablation therapy. The average lesion size was 3.1 cm (range of 1.1 - 6.9 cm). All of the interventions, regardless of lesion size, met the primary end point of satisfactory instrument positioning. There were no device-related or unexpected adverse events recorded. Only one patient had a mild adverse event and it resolved without intervention. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of the CT-Guide? navigation system for CT-guided liver interventions, for both biopsies and ablations. The targeting success rate for a satisfactory intervention was 100% with the system.

Finite One-Dimensional Photonic Crystal with Gaussian Modulation: Transmission and Escape

This paper studied the transmission coefficient and escape frequencies in a system of planar dielectric layers where the refractive index changes from one layer to another through a Gaussian function. The wave equation with normal incidence is analyzed. For the calculations, the transfer matrix formalism is used. In a previous work, the transmission and escape problem for Gaussian electronic superlattices is investigated. Now it studied the electromagnetic modes for a system formed by layers where the refractive index of the structure is modulated by a Gaussian function. The system presents transparency bands of transmission and gaps without transmission. The escape frequencies are situated near these transparency bands but they do not coincide with them. is the frequency (mode) and Γdescribes the width of the states. For these systems, the escape states are very wide. A non Gaussian system presents resonance peaks in the transmission and the escape states are narrow. The formation of transparency bands in the transmission for a Gaussian system is attributed to the widening of the escape states.

Comparison of Chemical and Functional Properties of Stevia rebaudiana(Bertoni)Varieties Cultivated in Mexican Southeast

The leaf powders from two varieties of Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) cultivated in Yucatan, Mexico were analyzed for their proximate composition, dietary fiber composition and functional properties. The leaf powders were a good source of carbohydrates (64.06%-67.98%), protein (12.11%-15.05%), and crudefiber (5.92%-9.52%). Total dietary fiber content in the S. rebaudiana leaf powders were 28.61 (Morita II) and 29.12 (Criolla) g/100g sample, with most of this content represented by insoluble dietary fiber 87.79% (Morita II) and 70.02% (Criolla). Neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) were higher in Criolla (19.29%, 17.77%, 8.98%) than Morita II variety (18.11%, 14.16%, 2.28%). Hemicellulose and cellulose were higher in Morita II (3.96%, 11.78%) than criolla variety (1.51%, 8.79%). Functional properties of leaf powder from Morita II and Criolla were, water-holding capacity (2.87-4.07 g/g sample), oil-holding capacity (6.49-6.79 g/g sample), water-absorption capacity (3.41-3.44 g/g sample), water-adsorption capacity (0.25-0.28 g/g sample), and organic molecule absorption capacity (1.13-1.81 g/g sample). These suggest that S. rebaudiana (Bertoni) leaf powders may be used as dietary supplement or as food additive.

The inability of a single-gap solar cell to absorb energies less than the band-gap energy is one of the intrinsic loss mechanisms which limit the conversion efficiency in photovoltaic devices. New approaches to “ultra-high” efficiency solar cells include devices such as multiple quantum wells (QW) and superlattices (SL) systems in the intrinsic region of a p-i-n cell of wider band-gap energy (barrier or host) semiconductor. These configurations are intended to extend the absorption band beyond the single gap host cell semiconductor. A theoretical model has been developed to study the performance of the strain-balanced GaAsP/InGaAs/GaAs MQWSC, and GaAs/GaInNAs MQWSC or SLSC. Our results show that conversion efficiencies can be reached which have never been obtained before for a single-junction solar cell.

Incidentally Discovered HCC (iHCC) in Explant Liver-Histopathologic Features and Clinical Outcome

Incidentally discovered hepatocellular carcinomas (iHCC) are tumors which are discovered on the explanted liver which were not present on imaging prior to transplant. The natural history, histopathologic characteristics and prognosis of iHCC are not clearly defined. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed to compare the characteristics of iHCC and established HCC within Milan criteria (eHCC) in patients who underwent liver transplantation at our center between 2000 and 2010. Results: During the study period a total of 975 adult patients were transplanted in our center;124 (12.7%) patients had eHCC and 26 (2.6%) patients had iHCC. A larger number of patients with iHCC (73.1%) had ascites when compared to eHCC (41.3%) (p = 0.035). Patients with iHCC had a higher mean bilirubin (p 0.001) and mean INR (p = 0.05) than patients with eHCC. Around 70% of patients with iHCC had a Model for End Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score greater than 15 at the time of listing while only 25% of patients with eHCC had a MELD greater than 15 at listing (p 0.001).The mean alphafetoprotein (AFP) in patients with iHCC was significantly lower (11.6 ± 16.5) than the patients with eHCC (564.9 ± 2180;p = 0.024). In patients with iHCC, 30.8% had a multiple tumors and 23% had bilobar involvement. The average number of tumors was 1.6 and the cumulative tumor size was 2.1 cm (SD 1.4). The cumulative tumor size in iHCC was significantly smaller than in eHCC (mean 3.9 cm) (p = 0.035). American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) T1 tumor stage was found in 58% of patients with iHCC and 48.4% of patients with eHCC (p = 0.829).The median survival was 9.47 years for iHCC (95% CI 7.0 - 11.9) and 8.7 years (95% CI 6.1 - 11.4) for eHCC (p = 0.328). While none of the patients with iHCC had recurrence of HCC, the incidence of recurrence in patients with eHCC was 6.4%. Conclusion: iHCC occurred in patients with more advanced liver disease than eHCC. AFP was usually not elevated in patients with iHCC. The c
