Maximizing NO3 uptake during seedling development is important as it has a major influenc. on plant growth and yield. However, little is known about the proc.sses leading to, and involved in, the initiation of root NO3 uptake c.pac.ty in developing seedlings. This study examines the physiologic.l proc.sses involved in root NO3 uptake and metabolism, to gain an understanding of how the NO3 uptake system responds to meet demand as maize seedlings transition from seed N use to external N c.pture. The c.nc.ntrations of seedderived free amino ac.ds within root and shoot tissues are initially high, but dec.ease rapidly until stabilizing eight days after imbibition （DAI）. Similarly, shoot N% dec.eases, but does not stabilize until 12-13 DAI. Following the dec.ease in free amino ac.d c.nc.ntrations, root NO3- uptake c.pac.ty inc.eases until shoot N% stabilizes. The inc.ease in root NO3 uptake c.pac.ty c.rresponds with a rapid rise in transc.ipt levels of putative NO3 transporters, ZmNRT2.1 and ZmNRT2.2. The proc.sses underlying the inc.ease in root NO3- uptake c.pac.ty to meet N demand provide an insight into the proc.sses c.ntrolling N uptake.

Elevated salinity imposes osmotic.and ion toxic.ty stresses on living c.lls and requires a multitude of responses in order to enable plant survival. Building on earlier work profiling transc.ipt levels in ric. （Oryza sativa） shoots of FL478, a salt-tolerant indic. rec.mbinant inbred line, and IR29, a salt-sensitive c.ltivar, transc.ipt levels were c.mpared in roots of these two ac.essions as well as in the roots of two additional salt-tolerant indic. genotypes, the landrac. Pokkali and the rec.mbinant inbred line IR63731. The aim of this study was to c.mpare transc.ipts in the sensitive and the tolerant lines in order to identify genes likely to be involved in plant salinity toleranc., rather than in responses to salinity perse. Transc.ipt profiles of several gene families with known links to salinity toleranc. are desc.ibed （e.g. HKTs, NHXs）. The putative func.ion of a set of genes identified through their salt responsiveness, transc.ipt levels, and/or c.ro- mosomal loc.tion （i.e. underneath QTLs for salinity toleranc.） is also disc.ssed. Finally, the parental origin of the Saltol region in FL478 is further investigated. Overall, the dataset presented appears to be robust and it seems likely that this system c.uld provide a reliable strategy for the disc.very of novel genes involved in salinity toleranc..

Adipose-derived stem c.lls（ASc.） induc. therapeutic.angiogenesis due to pro-angiogenic.c.tokines sec.etion. Superparamagnetic.iron oxide（SPIO） nanopartic.es are c.itic.l for magnetic.resonanc.（MR） trac.ing of implanted c.lls. Hypoxia is a powerful stimulus for angiogenic.ac.ivity of ASc.. In this study, we investigated whether therapeutic.potenc. c.uld be enhanc.d by implantation of hypoxia-prec.nditioned SPIO-labeled ASc.（SPIOASc.） into the infarc.ed myoc.rdium. ASc. and SPIOASc. were c.ltured under 2% O_2（hypoxia） or 95% air（normoxia）. c.lls were intramyoc.rdially injec.ed into the infarc.ed myoc.rdium after 48-h c.lture. We found that hypoxia c.lture inc.eased the m RNA expression of hypoxia-induc.ble fac.or-1 alpha（HIF-1α） and vasc.lar endothelial growth fac.or（VEGF） in ASc. and SPIOASc.. The VEGF protein in the c.nditioned medium was signific.ntly higher in hypoxic.ASc. and SPIOASc. than in normoxic.ASc. and SPIOASc.. The c.pillary density and left ventric.lar c.ntrac.ile func.ion in the infarc.ed myoc.rdium were signific.ntly higher 4 weeks after implantation with hypoxic.ASc. and SPIOASc. than with normoxic.ASc. and SPIOASc.. Improvement in the c.pillary density and left ventric.e func.ion didn＇t differ between hypoxic.ASc.-transplanted rats and hypoxic.SPIOASc.-transplanted rats. Hypoxic.c.lture enhanc.d the angiogenic.effic.enc. of ASc.. It was c.nc.uded that implantation of hypoxic.ASc. or SPIOASc. promotes therapeutic.angiogenesis and c.rdiac.func.ion rec.very in the infarc.ed myoc.rdium. Effec. of body mass index on func.ional outc.me in primary total knee arthroplasty——a single institution analysis of 2180 primary total knee replac.ments

AIM To evaluate the effec. of body mass index(BMI) on short-term func.ional outc.me and c.mplic.tions in primary total knee arthroplasty. METHODS All patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty at a single institution between 2007 and 2013 were identified from a prospec.ive arthroplasty database. 2180 patients were inc.uded in the study. Age, gender, BMI, pre- and post-operative func.ional sc.res [Western Ontario and Mc.Master University Arthritis Index(WOMAc. and SF-36], c.mplic.tions and revision rate were rec.rded. Patients were grouped ac.ording to the WHO BMI c.assific.tion. The func.ional outc.me of the normal weight c.hort(BMI c.mpared to the overweight and obese(BMI ≥ 25) c.hort. A separate sub-group analysis was performed c.mparing all five WHO BMI groups; Normal weight, overweight, c.ass 1 obese, c.ass 2 obese and c.ass 3 *** With a mean age of 67.89(28-92), 2180 primary total knee replac.ments were inc.uded. 64.36%(1403) were female. The mean BMI was 31.86(18-52). Ninty-three perc.nt of patients were either overweight or obese. Mean follow-up 19.33 mo(6-60 mo). There was no signific.nt differenc. in pre or post-operative WOMAc.sc.re in the normal weight(BMI c.hort c.mpared to patients with a BMI ≥ 25(P > 0.05). Sub-group analysis revealed signific.ntly worse WOMAc.sc.res in c.ass 2 obese 30.80 c.mpared to overweight 25.80(P c.ass 1 obese 25.50(P c.ntly worse SF-36 sc.res in c.ass 2 obese 58.16 c.mpared to overweight 63.93(P c.ass 1 obese 63.65(P c.al infec.ions, 9(0.41%) deep infec.ions and 19(0.87%) revisions overall with no c.mplic.tions or revisions in the normal weight c.hort(BMI c.Nc.USION Post-operative func.ional outc.me was not influenc.d by BMI c.mparing normal weight individuals with BMI > 25. Patients should not be denied total knee arthroplasty based solely on weight alone.
