Autumn migration of Ospreys from two distinct populations in Poland reveals partial migratory divide

Background:Long-term ringing and telemetry studies show that the Osprey(Pandion haliaetus)is a broad-front migrant following different migratory flyways,depending on the geographical location of their breeding *** have investigated two distinct and declining populations of Osprey in Poland,separated by only a few hundred kilometres,and hypothesised they may exhibit two different migration *** followed mortality causes,comparing them between migration and stationary phases of annual cycle,as well as between two distinct ***:Nineteen Ospreys,both juveniles and adults,were equipped with GPS loggers in 2017-2020 in two populations in western and eastern Poland and followed on their autumn *** calculated the distance they covered on the migration,number of stopover days,migration duration,daily distances covered and departure dates to compare them between age and sex classes and between the eastern and western ***:Ospreys from the western and eastern populations showed a partial migratory *** the first migrated through a western flyway,the second followed a central flyway,resulting in crossing the Mediterranean Sea in distant passes that affected the distance *** mortality reached at least 67%in juveniles and at least 57%in ***:We showed that two distinct Osprey populations in Poland revealed a partial migratory divide,with one covering greater distances over sea and deserts over the central *** might affect individual survival rates and contribute to a steeper decline in one of the *** order for this to be confirmed,more individuals still have to be followed.

The influence of potassium to mineral fertilizers on the maize health

Field experiments （2009-2011） were conducted at the Department of Agronomy at Poznar~ University of Life Sciences on the fields of the Research Institute in Swadzim. We evaluated the health of maize plants of two types, depending on the variations in mineral fertilization. The conducted research recorded the occurrence of pests such as oscinella frit （Oscinella frit L.） and the European corn borer （Pyrausta nubilalis Hbn.）. Diseases recorded during the research included two patho- genes： Fusarium （Fusarium ssp.） and corn smut （Ustilago maydis Corda）. It was shown that the meteorological conditions during the maize vegetation had a significant influence on the occurrence of pests. Adding potassium to mineral fertilizers increased the maize resistance to Fusarium. Cultivation of ＂stay-green＂ cultivar shall be considered as an element of in- tegrated maize protection. The occurrence of oscineUa flit was correlated with the occurrence of Fusarium as well as the occurrence of the European corn borer for both examined cultivars.

Application of a Lumped Multi-Section Model for Analyzing the Thermal Performance of a Small-Scale Biomass Boiler

The stationary lumped-cell model was developed and used to simulate the thermal characteristics of domestic biomass boiler with helically coiled tube heat exchanger(HCHE).The device serves as the heat source for ORC(Organic Rankine Cycle)unit and utilizes the thermal oil as the medium transferring the heat to the *** of studies available in the literature refer to the CFD simulations for water flow in tube coils or in one-or two-turn coil *** investigations are basically focused on the determination of Nusselt *** proposed herein model aims at determining the thermal performance of flue gas-oil HCHE while providing low CPU *** demonstrate the model possibilities,it was used to predict the flue gas temperatures at the inlet and outlet from the heat exchange zone,based on measurement data regarding the outlet temperature of thermal *** test series were *** computation results appeared to be in satisfactory agreement with experimental results(the discrepancies do not exceed 12%).The investigations showed that the used approach may be recommended as an alternative method that allows for fast prediction of thermal parameters for units of complex geometries,in particular the multi-coil heat exchangers.

Major complications following exenteration in cases of pelvic malignancy:A 10-year experience

AIM： To analyze the major complications after exenteration of gynecological and rectal malignancies.METHODS： Twenty-two patients with gynecological malignancy and 6 with rectal malignancy underwent pelvic exenteration （PE） between 1996 and 2005. PE was performed for primary malignancy in 71.4% of cases （vulvar cancer in 13, cancer rectal in 5, cervical cancer in 1 and Bartholin＇s gland cancer in 1 cases respectively and recurrent malignancy in 28.6% of cases （cervical cancer in 5, ovarian cancer in 1, uterine sarcoma in 1 and rectal cancer in 1 cases respectively）. Posterior PE, total PE and anterior PE were most often performed.RESULTS： Major complications in the operative field involving the urinary tract infection or the wound dehiscence occurred in 12 patients （42.9%）. Early complications included massive bleeding from the sacral plexus, adult respiratory distress syndrome （ARDS）, thrombophlebitis, acute renal failure, urinary bladder dysfunction, ureter damage, re-operation and pulmonary embolus. Urinary incontinence was observed in 2 women as a late complication. In 1 patient a nephrostomy was performed in 1 patient due to extensive hydronephrosis and 1 patient had complications connected with the gastrointestinal tract. The mortality rate was 7%, of which inter-operative mortality accounted for 3.5%. Major complications often occurred in advanced primary vulvar cancer affecting those with recurrent malignancies.CONCLUSION： PE is more beneficial to patients with primary vulvar and rectal cancer than to those with recurrent cancer. Knowledge of the inherent complications and morbidity of PE is essential.

Effect of interferon alpha and ribavirin treatment on serum levels of transforming growth factor-β1,vascular endothelial growth factor,and basic fibroblast growth factor in patients with chronic hepatitis C

AIM： To assess the role of transforming growth factor-β1 （TGF-β1）, vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） and basic fibroblast growth factor （bFGF） in the pathogenesis of fibrosis associated with chronic hepatitis C （CHC） and to evaluate the influence of the antiviral therapy on above parameter levels depending on the treatment results （complete response or no response）. METHODS： Study group included 100 patients with CHC, in whom fibrosis in liver specimens was assessed （Scheuer fibrosis score： 1-4 points）. Control group included 30 subjects with antibodies anti-HCV present and persistently normal ALT level, without fibrosis （Scheuer fibrosis score： 0 points）. Concentration of studied parameters was assayed in the serum by immunoenzymatic method before and after the therapy with interferon alpha-2b and ribavirin. RESULTS： TGF-β1 levels were significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group （35.89 vs 32.37 ng/mL; P= 0.023）. Such differences were not found in VEGF and bFGF levels. In patients showing complete response （negative HCV RNA and normal ALT level）, significant increase in VEGF （112.8 vs 315.03 pg/mL; P〈 0.05） and bFGF （2.51 vs 15.79 pg/mL; P=0.04） levels were found. Significant decrease in TGF-β1 level was observed both in responders （37.44 vs 30.02 ng/mL; P=0.05）, and in non-responders （38.22 vs 30.43 ng/mL; P=0.043）. bFGF levels before the treatment were significantly lower （2.51 vs 5.94 pg/mL; P=0.04）, and after the treatment significantly higher （15.79 vs 4.35 pg/mL; P=0.01） in patients with complete response response. CONCLUSION： Among the analyzed parameters TGF-β1 seems to play the most important role in the pathogenesis of fibrosis in CHC. Levels of this factor are significantly lower in subjects who do not have fibrosis developed in them. Good therapeutic effect in CHC patients is associated with significant changes in TGF-β1, VEGF, and bFGF levels, bFGF seems to have the highest usefulness in the prognosis of treatment

The effect of the dietary inclusion of pea seeds of colored-flowered and white-flowered varieties on gastrointestinal function in turkeys

This study investigated the effects of dietary replacement of soybean meal(SBM)with graded levels of pea seeds(PS)on the gastrointestinal function of *** of 2 pea varieties,a colored-flowered variety and a white-flowered variety(CFP and WFP,respectively)were fed to 56-d-old birds for 8 wk.A total of 539 female Hybrid turkeys were allocated to 7 groups,each group consisted of 7 pens with 11 birds per *** experiment had a 2-factorial design,with 3 dietary inclusion levels of PS(100,200 and 300 g/kg)and 2 pea varieties(CFP and WFP).The control group(diets without PS)was compared with CFP and WFP treatments by simple contrast *** comparison with CFP seeds,WFP seeds contained 7-fold less tannins(0.67 vs.4.66 g/kg)and less non-starch polysaccharides(NSP,117.8 vs.132.7 g/kg),but more trypsin inhibitors(1.34 vs.0.98 g/kg)and starch(489 vs.455 g/kg).A rise in the PS content of diets from 100 to 200 and 300 g/kg increased the weight of the small intestine(P=0.031)and the dry matter(DM)content of intestinal digesta(P=0.001),but it had no effect on the pH of *** the highest PS content differentiated the concentrations of short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs)in the small intestinal digesta(WFP>CFP,P=0.008),whereas PS did not cause any changes in the morphological parameters of the small intestinal *** dietary inclusion of PS had no influence on the levels of acetate,butyrate,putrefactive SCFAs or total SCFAs in the cecal *** from increasing the activities of b-glucosidase(P=0.017)and b-galactosidase(P=0.025),pea varieties did not affect the activities of the analyzed cecal microbial ***,CFP seeds decreased the DM content(P=0.041)and increased the pH of cecal digesta,compared with WFP seeds(P=0.013).The results of this study,pointing to a few differences in the functional parameters of the small intestine and cecum,indicate that tannins are not a factor differentiating the suitability of CFP and WFP seeds in the nutrition of f

While self-assembled monolayers(SAMs)of aromatic thiolates are frequently used in a wide range of applications,their formation is often hampered by the low solubilities of their *** we introduce the 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl group as a protective group for the thiol moiety,which increases the solubility and stability of the precursor,but becomes cleaved off during monolayer formation,especially at elevated temperature(60°C)and in presence of protons(trifluoroacetic acid).For a series of substituted terphenylthiols as model systems,it could be demonstrated by using ellipsometry,infrared-reflection absorption spectroscopy,and scanning-tunneling microscopy that the resulting SAMs have the same structure and quality as the ones obtained from the respective unprotected *** protective group has the additional advantage to be stable under Pdcatalyzed C–C bond formation reaction conditions,facilitating the syntheses of the respective precursors.

Strategic Buybacks of Sovereign Debt

We consider a transaction costs model of sovereign debt buybacks in this paper. We show that both secret and publicly known buybacks are profitable for the debtor country. Furthermore, the government of the debtor country would like to spend all of its initial endowment to buy back its debt as soon as possible. When the initial endowment of the government is publicly known, the equilibrium outcome of the secret buyback model is the same as in the public buyback model. However, the equilibrium outcomes are different when the initial endowment is private information of the government. Under reasonable conditions, the secondary market price under publicly observable buybacks is lower than the price under secret buybacks. Therefore the government prefers the former over the latter when the initial endowment is not commonly known.

Ultrastructure of oval cells in children with chronic hepatitis B,with special emphasis on the stage of liver fibrosis:The first pediatric study

AIM:To investigate the ultrastructure of oval cells in children with chronic hepatitis B,with special emphasis on their location in areas of collagen fibroplasia. METHODS:Morphological investigations were conducted on biopsy material obtained from 40 children,aged 3-16 years with chronic hepatitis B. The stage of fibrosis was assessed histologically using the arbitrary semiquantitative numerical scoring system proposed by Ishak et al. The material for ultrastructural investigation was fixed in glutaraldehyde and paraformaldehyde and processed for transmission-electron microscopic analysis. RESULTS:Ultrastructural examination of biopsy specimens obtained from children with chronic hepatitis B showed the presence of two types of oval cells,the hepatic progenitor cells and intermediate hepatic-like cells. These cells were present in the parenchyma and were seen most commonly in areas of intense periportal fibrosis (at least stage 2 according to Ishak et al) and in the vicinity of the limiting plate of the lobule. The activated nonparenchymal hepatic cells,i.e. transformed hepatic stellate cells and Kupffer cells were seen in close proximity to the intermediate hepatic-like cells. CONCLUSION:We found a distinct relationship between the prevalence of oval cells (hepatic progenitor cells and intermediate hepatocyte-like cells) and fibrosis stage in pediatric patients with chronic hepatitis B.
