As one of the fundamental physical properties of fluids, viscosity is considered to be the result of intermolecular forces and molecular momentum exchange. In this paper, we assume that hydrogen bonds, as the dominant intermolecular force, dominate the shear viscosity of liquid water and a relationship between the shear viscosity and hydrogen bonding is developed using dimensional analysis,which is further validated by computational chemistry methods. Water, methanol and ethanol are taken as examples to illustrate shear viscosity accounting for intermolecular forces and momentum exchange and their temperature dependence as a result of molecular thermal motions. The calculated shear viscosity of water is consistent with experimental data, which supports the idea that we can use the conceptual model to reveal the nature of shear viscosity.

Fitness consequences of a clock pollinator filter in Nicotiana attenuata flowers in nature

Nicotiana attenuata flowers, diurnally open,emit scents and move vertically to interact with nocturnal hawkmoth and day-active hummingbird pollinators. To examine the fitness consequences of these floral rhythms, we conducted pollination trials in the plant’s native habitat with phase-shifted flowers of plants silenced in circadian clock genes. The results revealed that some pollination benefits observed under glasshouse conditions were not reproduced under natural field conditions. Floral arrhythmicity increased pollination success by hummingbirds, while reducing those by hawkmoths in the field. Thus, floral circadian rhythms may influence a plant’s fitness by filtering pollinators leading to altered seed set from outcrossed pollen.

Determination of site quality is a basic tool for proper selection of locations and species, in management of forest plantations. Throughout the Caribbean studies of site quality are few and are hampered by statistical limitations, inappropriate growth models, and limited data. We fitted growth curves for dominant height to evaluate and clas- sify site quality ofteak （Tectona grandis） plantations by using data from 44 permanent sample plots established since 1990 in 3--22 years old teak plantations in the Colombian Caribbean region. We used Korf＇s and yon Bertalanffy＇s models to fit curves as non-linear effects models. Both models, with a single random parameter, were considered as adequate for dominant height growth modelling, but Korf＇s model was superior. The resulting curves were anamorphic and closely reflected high variability in site quality. Five site classes were clarified： at a base age of 12 years old, teak reached a mean dominant height of 24.8 m on the best sites, 9.8 m in the worst sites, and in the averages sites, 15.8-18.8 m. Using this model, we identified the best and the worst sites for teak plantations in the Caribbean region. This model proved a useful tool, not only for site quality evaluation, but also for improved teak plantation planning and management.

Vitamin D Status of Elite Athletes in Singapore and Its Associations With Muscle Function and Bone Health

Purpose The primary aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency among Asian athletes participating in indoor and outdoor sports in equatorial *** aims are to examine the relationship between vitamin D status and skeletal muscle strength and performance,and bone *** Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were determined in 95 indoor and outdoor athletes across various *** muscle strength and performance were assessed using the isometric mid-thigh pull(IMTP),drop jump test and 30 m sprint *** Mineral Density(BMD)was measured using Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry(DXA).Results Mean serum 25(OH)D concentrations were 28.6±8.9 ng/mL among indoor,and 39.2±13.2 ng/mL among outdoor sport athletes respectively(P<0.05).More indoor sport athletes(62%)had insufficient vitamin D compared to outdoor sport athletes(30%)(P<0.05).Outdoor sport athletes exhibited significantly greater peak force generation than indoor sport athletes(2079±470 N vs.1869±546 N,P=0.027).Other markers of muscle function were not significantly different between *** and outdoor sport athletes did not have significantly different BMDs although none of the athletes studied presented with poor *** who were deficient in vitamin D had significantly lower BMD compared to athletes with sufficient vitamin D(P=0.01).Conclusion Forty-seven percent of Singaporean athletes studied had suboptimal vitamin D *** monitoring of vitamin D levels among indoor sport athletes should be in place to ensure optimal health and performance.

Anthropogenic global change, including agricultural intensification and climate change, poses a substantial challenge to many herbivores due to a reduced availability of feeding resources. The concomitant food stress is expected to detrimentally affect performance, amongst others in dispersal-related traits. Thus, while dispersal is of utmost importance to escape from deteriorating habitat conditions, such conditions may negatively feedback on the ability to do so. Therefore, we here investigate the impact of larval and adult food stress on traits related to dispersal ability, including morphology, physiology, flight performance, and exploratory behavior, in a butterfly. We show that inadequate nutrition during development and in the adult stage dim inishes flight performance, despite som e reallocation of somatic resources. Detrimental effects of food stress on flight performance were mainly caused by reductions in body mass and storage reserves. Similar results were found for exploratory behavior. Furthermore, exploratory behavior was found to be (moderately) repeatable at the individual level, which might indicate the existence of a personality trait. This notion is further supported by the fact that flight performance and exploratory behavior were positively correlated, potentially suggesting the existence of a dispersal syndrome. In summary, our findings may have important implications for dispersal in natural environments, as the conditions requiring dispersal the m ost impair flight ability and thereby likely dispersal rates.

Clinicopathological survey of 23 patients with lacrimal fossa lesions in Hong Kong

AIM: To survey the clinicopathological correlations of lacrimal fossa lesions in the Hong Kong population. METHODS: A total of 23 patients with lacrimal fossa lesions were identified radiologically. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 52 year-old. The medical records of patients diagnosed with lacrimal fossa lesions and subsequently underwent radiological investigations were collected and reviewed retrospectively throughout a six years period from 2000 to 2006 from three regional hospitals (Tung Wah Eastern Hospital, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital and Queen Mary Hospital) belonging to the Hong Kong Mega Cluster. Patient demographics, presenting signs and symptoms, imaging modalities, pathological reports and subsequent management were recorded. RESULTS: The most common initial presenting symptom was upper lid swelling (83%) followed by proptosis (13%). 19 patients (83%) had benign lacrimal fossa lesion and 4 patients (17%) had malignancy. Three of the malignancies were lymphomas and one was adenoid cystic carcinoma. CONCLUSION: Age is an important factor in considering the differential diagnosis of lacrimal fossa lesion. Lymphoproliferative diseases have the highest incidence in patients over 60 years of age while inflammatory lesions are more common in younger patients in Hong Kong.

Purpose Isometric strength training (IST) with rapid non-sustained contraction (RIST) is effective in improving the ability to generate force ***,the neuromuscular adaptation of IST with sustained contraction (SIST) and RIST is not ***,the aim of the study was to compare the neuromuscular adaptations of RIST with *** Thirty-three national floorball players (23.9 ± 3.1 years old;1.69± 0.08 m;64.6± 11.1 kg) were recruited for this ***-and post-test included countermovement jump (CMJ),30-m sprint (TT30),isometric squat at 90° (ISqT90) and 120° (ISqT120) knee *** were randomly assigned to either control (Con) (n =9),RIST (n =12) or SIST (n =12)group and performed 12 sessions of intervention *** groups performed the same sets of exercises,but RIST and SIST had to perform ISqT with and without sustained contraction,*** Time × group effect for CMJ height (P =0.01,η2p=0.25),peak force (PF) (P =0.03,η2p =0.22) and rate of force development (RFD) (P =0.02,η2p =0.22) obtained from ISqT 120 were noted.A main effect for time was observed in CMJ height,PF obtained from ISqT90 and ISqT120,and RFD obtained from ISqT90 (P < 0.01,0.27 < η2p < 0.57).There was greater improvement in TT30 (P =0.043,d =3.00),ISqT90 PF (P =0.034,d =3.12),ISqT 120 PF (P =0.003,d =4.54) and ISqT120 RFD (P=0.033,d=1.36) in the SIST than the Con *** SIST was more effective in improving strength and dynamic performance as compared to RIST,making it a viable training method to enhance dynamic performances.
