The electrochemical corrosion behaviour of three Zr-Ag alloys (Zr-1Ag, Zr-3Ag and Zr-5Ag) was investigated. Open circuit potential, linear potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (eIS) techniques were employed in aerated artificial saliva (pH = 4.0) at 37°C. Silver alloying additions are found to be effective in enhancing the corrosion resistance of zirconium in artificial saliva environment. In fact, Zr-Ag alloys exhibit higher open circuit potentials, larger breakdown potentials and higher impedance values as compared to cp Zr. This behaviour can be ascribed to the formation of a thicker and more stable passive film with increasing compactness, able to provide better protection against the corrosion attack.

Morphological transformation of surface structures is widely manifested in nature and highly preferred for many applications such as wetting interaction;however,in situ tuning of artificial morphologies independent of smart responsive materials remains ***,with the aid of microfluidics,we develop a pneumatic programmable superrepellent surface by tailoring conventional wetting materials(e.g.,polydimethylsiloxane)with embedded flexible chambers connecting a microfluidic system,thus realizing a morphological transformation for enhanced liquid repellency based on a nature‐inspired rigid‐flexible hybrid principle(i.e.,triggering symmetry breaking and oscillator coupling mechanisms).The enhancement degree can be in situ tuned within around 300 ms owing to pneumatically controllable chamber *** also demonstrate that the surface can be freely programmed to achieve elaborated morphological pathways and gradients for preferred droplet manipulation such as directional rolling and *** study highlights the potential of an in situ morphological transformation to realize tunable wettability and provides a programmable level of droplet control by intellectualizing conventional wetting materials.

Calcium hydroxide nanoparticles in aqueous suspensions (also called nanolime) were successfully employed in Cultural Heritage conservation thanks to the ability of favoring readhesion of the pictorial layer on original carbonatic substrates or allowing to a better superficial cohesion and protection of treated stones. In this work, we have synthesized nanolime particles in aqueous suspension by two different methods. The produced particles were characterized in the laboratory, in terms of structural and morphological features, by means of X-Ray diffraction powder (XRD) and by transmission electron microscopy (TeM), respectively. Nanoparticles were crystalline, regularly shaped, hexagonally plated and with side dimensions generally ranging from 300 nm to 30 nm or less. Crystal structure of nanolime particles directly in the aqueous suspension, has been also analyzed by synchrotron diffraction from X-ray synchrotron radiation (SR-XRD);data have been analyzed by means of the Rietveld method and we have investigated the structure of Ca(OH)2 particles in suspension in terms of cell parameters, atomic coordinates, bond lengths and angles.

The most recent discoveries in the biochemical field are highlighting the increasingly important role of lipid droplets(LDs)in several regulatory mechanisms in living *** are dynamic organelles and therefore their complete characterization in terms of number,size,spatial positioning and relative distribution in the cell volume can shed light on the roles played by *** now,fluorescence microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are assessed as the gold standard methods for identifying LDs due to their high sensitivity and ***,such methods generally only provide 2D assays and partial ***,both can be destructive and with low productivity,thus limiting analysis of large cell numbers in a *** we demonstrate for the first time the capability of 3D visualization and the full LD characterization in high-throughput with a tomographic phase-contrast flow-cytometer,by using ovarian cancer cells and monocyte cell lines as models.A strategy for retrieving significant parameters on spatial correlations and LD 3D positioning inside each cell volume is *** information gathered by this new method could allow more in depth understanding and lead to new discoveries on how LDs are correlated to cellular functions.

Palm Oil Production in Malaysia: An Analytical Systems Model for Balancing economic Prosperity, Forest Conservation and Social Welfare

Since the late 1950’s, the Malaysian human population has nearly quadrupled, increasing pressure on natural resource exploitation to meet domestic needs and to earn foreign exchange from exports. Global demand for Malaysian palm oil in particular had steeply increased since the mid-1970s and by 2013, the commodity was the leading foreign exchange earner. To fulfill and sustain this demand, the country’s economy has steadily shifted bias towards production and associated value addition of palm oil products for export. However, as a consequence, many of Malaysia’s natural tropical forests have been converted to palm oil farming resulting in loss of approximately 10,000 km2 of forest cover over the past twenty-five years, and biodiversity has been displaced or lost. To provide a deeper insight into the interplay amongst key interrelated environmental and socio-economic variables, and a forecast of possible future balance, we used a systems dynamism modeling tool, STeLLAR (structural thinking, experiential learning laboratory with animation), to simulate and project how Malaysia could achieve a medium-term sustainable balance or optimization between palm oil production and forest conservation without compromising on human social welfare. The model consisted of four main modules (environmental, economic, social development and human welfare) each with component parameters, and interconnected by input and output loops. Model calibrations, testing and preruns involved existing official 30-year time-series datasets. Subsequently, four scenarios: environmental conservation;economic growth under increased global palm oil demand;economy decline under decreased palm oil demand;and Control condition with little or no change, were selected for simulated projections of future possibilities. Simulation results showed that scenarios and variable interactions that reduce environmental damage would offer the best chance for optimizing the palm oil economy while also minimizing forest

The long migration of the Balearic Arc (Alpine-Apennine and Alpine-Maghrebian belts) in the early-Middle Miocene caused the formation of a subducted lithospheric edifice in the western and central Mediterranean regions. Then, since the Late Miocene, this slab was almost completely disrupted, only maintaining a narrow and deformed remnant beneath the southernmost Tyrrhenian basin. This work describes a tentative reconstruction of the tectonic processes that caused the formation of major tears and breakoffs in the original slabs and the consequent disruption of the subducted lithosphere. In particular, it is suggested that this relatively fast process was produced by the collision between the Anatolian-Aegean system and the continental Adriatic domain, which triggered a number of extrusion processes. Possible connections between the proposed tectonic evolution and the spatio-temporal distribution and geochemical signatures of magmatic activity are then discussed. It is supposed that such activity has been mainly conditioned by the occurrence of transtensional tectonics in the wake of escaping orogenic wedges.
