Variability of European beech wood density as influenced by interactions between treering growth and aspect

Background： Wood density is considered to be the most important predictor of wood quality but despite its importance, diffuse-porous tree species have been the subject of only a limited number of studies. The importance of European beech forests for Central Europe calls for profound research to examine the potential impact of a warmer climate on the quality of beech timber. Methods： In this study we analysed the influence of tree-ring width and tree-ring age on the wood density of beech, and whether the wood density response to these two parameters is modified by aspect. A linear mixed-effects model for wood density was constructed for mean density data measured with high frequency densitometry on stem discs from 72 beech trees sampled from two different aspects （northeast -NE and southwest -SW） of a valley in southwestern Germany. Results： Part of the variability of mean annual wood density was explained by cambial age： an increase in cambial age resulted in an increase in mean wood density. Tree-ring width and aspect had only a small influence on wood density, Wood density on the SW aspect was lower than on the NE with a difference of approximately 0.006 g/cm3. The between-tree variability was very high. Conclusions： The significant interaction between cambial age and aspect reflects the importance of site conditions at older tree ages： with increasing cambial age the difference between aspects becomes stronger. Our results give a better understanding of the importance of site conditions on the wood quality of beech.

Nowadays, more and more users share real-time news and information in micro-blogging communities such as Twitter, Tumblr or Plurk. In these sites, information is shared via a followers/followees social network structure in which a follower will receive all the micro-blogs from the users he/she follows, named followees. With the increasing number of registered users in this kind of sites, finding relevant and reliable sources of information becomes essential. The reduced number of characters present in micro-posts along with the informal language commonly used in these sites make it difficult to apply standard content-based approaches to the problem of user recommendation. To address this problem, we propose an algorithm for recommending relevant users that explores the topology of the network considering different factors that allow us to identify users that can be considered good information sources. Experimental evaluation conducted with a group of users is reported, demonstrating the potential of the approach.

Huntington's disease (HD): HD is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease, caused by a CAG trinucleotide repeat expansion in the first exon of the HTT gene encoding the huntingtin protein. The mutant protein contains an expanded polyglutamine sequence that confers a toxic gain-of-function and causes neurodegeneration. Moreover, several studies indicate that loss of the normal protein beneficial functions, contribute to the pathology (Schulte and Littleton 2011). Triplet expansion over 40 repeats are fully penetrant and invariably lead to manifest HD in the fourth or fifth decade of life.

Peroxisome proliferator activated receptors(PPARs) α,-γ and-β/δ are ligand-activated transcription factors and members of the superfamily of nuclear hormone receptor. These receptors play key roles in maintaining glucose and lipid homeostasis by modulating gene expression. PPARs constitute a recognized druggable target and indeed several classes of drugs used in the treatment of metabolic disease symptoms, such as dyslipidemia(fibrates, e.g. fenofibrate and gemfibrozil) and diabetes(thiazolidinediones, e.g. rosiglitazone and pioglitazone) are ligands for the various PPAR isoforms. More precisely, antidiabetic thiazolidinediones act on PPARγ, while PPARα is the main molecular target of antidyslipidemic fibrates. Over the past few years, our understanding of the mechanism underlying the PPAR modulation of gene expression has greatly increased. This review presents a survey on terrestrial and marine natural products modulating the PPARα system with the objective of highlighting how the incredible chemodiversity of natural products can provide innovative leads for this "hot" target.

The efficiency of traditional Chinese medicine theory and acupoints shows once more its accurate regulatory capacity by improving women biological cycles with the use of electroacupuncture(EA).Results presented in a research study that preformed ovulation induction in women with anovulation due to polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS),successfully provided data supporting acupuncture as a natural treatment for infertile women,with no significant side *** purpose of this study is to demonstrate how EA treatment can induce ovulation related to the hormonal and neuronal system in women affected by *** study introduces proof of effectivity and improvement based on the research of the University of Gothenburg,Sweden,that presents a study on how EA can be an alternative to ovulation-inducing drugs,to be considered as a possible holistic regulator of PCOS and *** study covered 24 women with PCOS and oligo-/amenorrhea who received EA in a low frequency of 2 Hz with a total of 14 treatments applied for 3 *** were taken three times during the study to see fluctuations in hormonal,ovulatory,and symptomatic behavior of *** demonstrated effective regular ovulatory inductions in more than a third of women.

Background:The evaporative fraction(EF)represents an important biophysical parameter reflecting the distribution of surface available *** this study,we investigated the daily and seasonal patterns of EF in a multi-year corn cultivation located in southern Italy and evaluated the performance of five machine learning(ML)classes of algorithms:the linear regression(LR),regression tree(RT),support vector machine(SVM),ensembles of tree(ETs)and Gaussian process regression(GPR)to predict the EF at daily time *** adopted methodology consisted of three main steps that include:(i)selection of the EF predictors;(ii)comparison of the different classes of ML;(iii)application,cross-validation of the selected ML algorithms and comparison with the observed ***:Our results indicate that SVM and GPR were the best classes of ML at predicting the EF,with a total of four different algorithms:cubic SVM,medium Gaussian SVM,the Matern 5/2 GPR,and the rational quadratic *** com-parison between observed and predicted EF in all four algorithms,during the training phase,were within the 95%confidence interval:the R^(2)value between observed and predicted EF was 0.76(RMSE 0.05)for the medium Gaussian SVM,0.99(RMSE 0.01)for the rational quadratic GPR,0.94(RMSE 0.02)for the Matern 5/2 GPR,and 0.83(RMSE 0.05)for the cubic SVM *** results were obtained during the testing *** results of the cross-validation analysis indicate that the R^(2)values obtained between all iterations for each of the four adopted ML algorithms were basically constant,confirming the ability of ML as a tool to predict ***:ML algorithms represent a valid alternative able to predict the EF especially when remote sensing data are not available,or the sky conditions are not *** application to different geographical areas,or crops,requires further development of the model based on different data sources of soils,climate,and cropping systems.

Urban barriers are often a consequence of the unplanned expansion of transport infrastructures,housing growth nearby existing transport infrastructures,and the vehicular traffic *** process,also known as“community severance”,is a problem that affects the travel patterns of the population and causes negative impacts to adjacent communities,but it is not easy to *** an alternative to the costly technologies and restricted-access data sometimes used to analyze urban barriers,we propose an analytical approach that assesses community severance levels by classifying the quality of Pedestrian Crossings on Urban Streets(the PeCUS index).Additionally,the approach is used to identify possible inequities nearby the different classification groups regarding demographic *** used the chi-square(χ^(2))test of independence and the standardized Pearson residuals to indicate deficits and excesses of residents regarding the demographic characteristics studied surrounding the urban *** found the following evidences of associations:residents with low-income or those aged up to 19 tend to live close to the worst crossings,whereas residents with permanent mobility constraints or the elderly tend to live near the crossings with the best ***,the study shows that the assessment of community severance by the analysis of the PeCUS index is ***,it reveals that the distribution of residents surrounding the distinct classes of quality of crossings is equitable for vulnerable social groups,except for low-income or young residents.

Testicular parenchymal abnormalities in Klinefelter syndrome： a question of cancer？ Examination of 40 consecutive patients

Klinefelter syndrome （KS） is a hypergonadotropic hypogonadism characterized by a 47, XXY karyotype. The risk of testicular cancer in KS is of interest in relation to theories about testicular cancer etiology generally; nevertheless it seems to be low. We evaluated the need for imaging and serum tumor markers for testicular cancer screening in KS. Participants were 40 consecutive KSpatients, enrolled from December 2009 to January 2013. Lactate dehydrogenase （LDH）, alpha-fetoprotein （AFP）, and beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin subunit （^-HCG） serum levels assays and testicular ultrasound （US） with color Doppler, were carried out at study entry, after 6 months and every year for 3 years. Abdominal magnetic resonance （MR） was performed in KS when testicular US showed micro-calcifications, testicular nodules and cysts. Nearly 62% of the KS had regular testicular echotexture, 37.5% showed an irregular echotexture and 17.5% had micro-calcifications and cysts. Eighty seven percent of KS had a regular vascular pattern, 12.5% varicocele, 12.5% nodules 〈1 cm, but none had nodules 〉1 cm. MR ruled out the diagnosis of cancer in all KS with testicular micro calcifications, nodules and cysts. No significant variations in LDH, AFP, and ^-HCG levels and in US pattern have been detected during follow-up. We compared serum tumor markers and US pattern between KS with and without cryptorchidism and no statistical differences were found. We did not find testicular cancer in KS, and testicular US, tumor markers and MR were, in selected cases, useful tools for correctly discriminating benign from malignant lesions.
