Foam rolling and stretching do not provide superior acute flexibility and stiffness improvements compared to any other warm-up intervention: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Background:Acute improvement in range of motion(ROM)is a widely reported effect of stretching and foam rolling,which is commonly explained by changes in pain threshold and/or musculotendinous ***,these effects were also reported in response to various other active and passive interventions that induce responses such as enhanced muscle ***,we hypothesized that acute ROM enhancements could be induced by a wide variety of interventions other than stretching or foam rolling that promote an increase in muscle ***:After a systematic search in PubMed,Web of Science,and SPORTDiscus databases,38 studies comparing the effects of stretching and foam rolling with several other interventions on ROM and passive properties were *** studies had 1134 participants in total,and the data analysis resulted in 140 effect sizes(ESs).ES calculations were performed using robust variance estimation model with ***:Study quality of the included studies was classified as fair(PEDro score=4.58)with low to moderate certainty of *** showed no significant differences in ROM(ES=0.01,p=0.88),stiffness(ES=0.09,p=0.67),or passive peak torque(ES=-0.30,p=0.14)between stretching or foam rolling and the other identified *** plots revealed no publication ***:Based on current literature,our results challenge the established view on stretching and foam rolling as a recommended component of warm-up *** lack of significant difference between interventions suggests there is no need to emphasize stretching or foam rolling to induce acute ROM,passive peak torque increases,or stiffness reductions.

Metabolic syndrome as a risk factor for gallstone disease

AIM: To establish an association between the presence of metabolic syndrome and the development of gallstone disease. METhODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study in a check-up unit in a university hospital in Mexico City. We enrolled 245 subjects, comprising 65 subjects with gallstones (36 women, 29 men) and 180 controls (79 women and 101 men without gallstones). Body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, plasma insulin, and serum lipids and lipoproteins levels were measured. Insulin resistance was calculated by homeostasis model assessment. Unconditional logistic regression analysis (univariate and multivariate) was used to calculate the risk of gallstone disease associated with the presence of at least three of the criteria (Adult Treatment Panel Ⅲ). Analyses were adjusted for age and sex. RESULTS: Among 245 subjects, metabolic syndrome was present in 40% of gallstone disease subjects, compared with 17.2% of the controls, adjusted by age and gender (odds ratio (OR) = 2.79; 95%CI, 1.46-5.33; P= 0.002), a dose-dependent effect was observed with each component of metabolic syndrome (OR=2.36, 95%CI, 0.72-7.71; P= 0.16 with one component and OR = 5.54, 95%CI, 1.35-22.74; P = 0.02 with four components of metabolic syndrome). homeostasis model assessment was significantly associated with gallstone disease (adjusted OR = 2.25; 95%CI, 1.08-4.69; P= 0.03). CONCLUSION: We conclude that as for cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus, gallstone disease appears to be strongly associated with metabolic syndrome.

Ag2S nano dots have already bee n dem onstrated as promisi ng n ear-i nfrared (NIR-II, 1.0-1.45 pm) emitting nan oprobes with low toxicity, high penetration and high resolution for in vivo imaging of, for example, tumors and vasculature. In this work, we have systematically investigated the pote ntial applicati on of function alized Ag2S nano dots for accurate imaging of damaged myocardium tissues after a myocardial in farction in duced by either partial or global ischemia. Ag2S nano dots surface-function alized with the an giote nsin II peptide (ATI I) have show n over 10-fold enhanced binding efficiency to damaged tissues than non-specifically (PEG) functionalized Ag2S nanodots due to their interaction with the upregulated angiotensin II receptor type I (AT1R). It is demonstrated how the NIR-II images generated by ATII-functionalized Ag2S nanodots contain valuable information about the location and extension of damaged tissue in the myocardium allowing for a proper identification of the occluded artery as well as an in direct evaluati on of the damage level. The pote ntial applicati on of Ag2S nano dots in the n ear future for in vivo imaging of myocardial infarction was also corroborated by performing proof of concept whole body imaging experiments.

Transitional geology and its effects on development and longwall mining in Pittsburgh Seam

This paper presents the geologic and ground control challenges that were encountered by Consol Energy＇s coal mining operations in southwestem Pennsylvania, USA. Geologic encounters, such as sandstone- to-limestone geology transition, massive sandstone channels, shale channels, pyritic rich green claystone, laminated roof, and soft floor, have significantly impacted the development and longwall mining in Consol＇s Pittsburgh Seam coal mines. Experience from different mines shows that, in the sandstone-to-limestone geology transition zone, 1.83 m high-tension, fully-grouted primary bolts employed along with 4.88 m cen- ter cable bolts at every other strap greatly improved beam building and ensured proper anchorage into the competent roof. hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was often necessary to enhance caving of the massive sandstone behind the shields to relieve pressure at the face. The presence of soft floor coupled with presence of thick floor coal and deep cover, induced excessive headgate convergence during retreat of the first right hand longwall panel. In all, it is important to explore the roof and in-seam geology in detail to delineate normal and anomalous geologic conditions prior to and during development. With diligent geologic reconnaissance, geotechnical monitoring, and assessment, site-specific geotechnical solutions have been provided to mine operations to improve safety and productivity.

Were the Miao Kings ＂Prophets of Renewal＂？ The Case of the 1795-1797 hunan Miao Revolt

This essay considers the concept of ＂prophets of renewal＂ introduced by James Scott in The Art of Not Being Governed.. An Anarchist history of Upland Southeast Asia （2009）, as seen in the context of the 1795-97 Miao revolt along China＇s hunan-Guizhou border. The appearance ofa ＂Miao King＂ and four ＂Wu kings＂ centering anti-Qing resistance in an intractable highland--utilizing native legends, spirit possession, investment of officials, and multi-ethnic recruitment--suggests a case of＂Zomia＂（the vast Southeast Asian Massif） prophets in action, as Scott himself suggests. Closer examination, however, reveals a more complex and uncertain picture, characterized by division between rival lords and an overall dearth of institutional, ideological, or cosmological elaboration, all further obscured by a paucity of historical sources. The Miao kings might be seen as prophets of renewal in a general sense, but the fit is inexact. There is still value, however, in considering Scott＇s model in the study of this event. It enables a sharper conceptualization of the agency of the Miao people, while offering a case for comparison with analogous instances of religiously-based native resistance on other Qing frontiers.

Colonoscopic polypectomy in anticoagulated patients

AIM:To review our experience performing polypectomy in anticoagulated patients without interruption of ***: Retrospective chart review at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto health Care System. Two hundred and twenty five polypectomies were performed in 123 patients. Patients followed a standardized protocol that included stopping warfarin for 36 h to avoid supratherapeutic anticoagulation from the bowel preparation. Patients with lesions larger than 1 cm were generally rescheduled for polypectomy off warfarin. Endoscopic clips were routinely applied prophylactically. RESULTS: One patient (0.8%, 95% CI: 0.1%-4.5%) developed major post-polypectomy bleeding that required transfusion. Two others (1.6%, 95% CI: 0.5%-5.7%) had self-limited hematochezia at home and did not seek medical attention. The average polyp size was 5.1 ± 2.2 mm. CONCLUSION: Polypectomy can be performed in therapeutically anticoagulated patients with lesions up to 1 cm in size with an acceptable bleeding rate.

Ultra-high Field Diffusion MRI Reveals Early Axonal Pathology in Spinal Cord of ALS mice

Background:Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is a disease characterized by a progressive degeneration of motor neurons leading to *** previous MRI diffusion tensor imaging studies detected early white matter changes in the spinal cords of mice carrying the G93A-SOD1 ***,we extend those studies using ultra-high field MRI(17.6 T)and fluorescent microscopy to investigate the appearance of early structural and connectivity changes in the spinal cords of ALS ***:The spinal cords from presymptomatic and symptomatic mice(80 to 120 days of age)were scanned(ex-vivo)using diffusion-weighted *** fractional anisotropy(FA),axial(AD)and radial(RD)diffusivities were calculated for axial slices from the thoracic,cervical and lumbar regions of the spinal *** diffusion parameters were compared with fluorescence microscopy and membrane cellular markers from the same tissue ***:At early stages of the disease(day 80)in the lumbar region,we found,a 19% decrease in FA,a 9% decrease in AD and a 35% increase in *** changes were observed in cervical and thoracic spinal cord *** between control and ALS mice groups at the symptomatic stages(day 120)were *** fluorescence microscopy at 80 days,demonstrated a 22% reduction in axonal area and a 22% increase in axonal *** and quantitative connectome analyses measured by edge weights showed a 52%decrease in the lumbar regions of the spinal cords of this ALS mice group.A significant increase in ADC(23.3%)in the ALS mice group was related to an increase in aquaporin ***:These findings suggest that the combination of ultra-high field diffusion MRI with fluorescent ALS mice reporters is a useful approach to detect and characterize presymptomatic white matter micro-ultrastructural changes and axonal connectivity anomalies in ALS.

Docosahexaenoic acid suppresses arachidonic acid-induced proliferation of LS-174T human colon carcinoma cells

AIM： To investigate the impact of arachidonic acid （AA） and docosahexaenoic acid （DhA） and their combination on colon cancer cell growth. METhODS： The LS-174T colon cancer cell line was used to study the role of the prostaglandin precursor AA and the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid DhA on cell growth. Cell viability was assessed in XTT assays. For analysis of cell cycle and cell death, flow cytometry and DAPI staining were applied. Expression of cyclooxygenase-2 （COX-2）, p21 and bcl-2 in ceils incubated with AA or DhA was examined by real-time RT-PCR. Prostaglandin E2 （PGE2） generation in the presence of AA and DhA was measured using a PGE2- ELISA. RESULTS： AA increased cell growth, whereas DhA reduced viability of LS 174T cells in a time- and dosedependent manner. Furthermore, DhA down- regulated mRNA of bcl-2 and up-regulated p21. Interestingly, DhA was able to suppress AA-induced cell proliferation and significantly lowered AA-derived PGE2 formation. DhA also down-regulated COX-2 expression. In addition to the effect on PGE2 formation, DhA directly reduced PGE2-induced cell proliferation in a dosedependent manner. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that DhA can inhibit the pro-proliferative effect of abundant AA or PGE2.

Current global warming is particularly pronounced in the Arctic and arthropods are expected to respond rapidly to these changes. Long-term studies of individual arthropod species from the Arctic are, however, virtually absent. We examined butterfly specimens collected from yellow pitfall traps over 14 years （1996-2009） at Zackenberg in high-arctic, north-east Greenland. Specimens were previously sorted to the family level. We identified them to the species level and examined long-term species-specific phenological responses to recent summer wanning. Two species were rare in the samples （Polaris fritillary Boloria polaris and Arctic blue Plebejus glandon） and statistical analyses of phenological responses were therefore restricted to the two most abundant species （Arctic fritillary, B. chariclea and Northern clouded yellow Colias hecla）. Our analyses demonstrated a trend towards earlier flight seasons in B. chariclea, but not in C. hecla. The timing of onset, peak and end of the flight season in B. chariclea were closely related to snowmelt, July temperature and their interaction, whereas onset, peak and end of the flight season in C. hecla were only related to timing of snowmelt. The duration of the butterfly flight season was significantly positively related to the temporal overlap with floral resources in both butterfly species. We further demonstrate that yellow pitfall traps are a useful alternative to transect walks for butterfly recording in tundra habitats. More phenological studies of Arctic arthropods should be carded out at the species level and ideally be analysed in context with interacting species to assess how ongoing climate change will affect Arctic biodiversity in the near future [Current Zoology 60 （2）： 243-251, 2014].

Characteristics of Clostridium difficile infection in patients hospitalized with myelodysplastic syndrome or acute myelogenous leukemia

AIM To evaluate factors associated with Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) and outcomes of CDI in the myelodysplastic syndrome(MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) *** After IRB approval,all MDS/AML patients hospitalized at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center between August 2011 and December 2013 were *** charts were reviewed for demographics,clinical information,development of CDI,complications of CDI,and *** with CDI,defined as having a positive stool PCR done for clinical suspicion of CDI,were compared to those without CDI in order to identify predictors of disease.A t-test was used for comparison of continuous variables and chisquare or Fisher's exact tests were used for categorical variables,as *** Two hundred and twenty-three patients (60.1% male,mean age 61.3 years,13% MDS,87% AML) had 594 unique hospitalizations during the study *** patients (15.2%) were diagnosed with *** significantly associated with CDI included lower albumin at time of hospitalization (P hemotherapy (P = 0.015),total days of neutropenia (P = 0.014),and total days of hospitalization (P = 0.005).Gender (P = 0.10),age (P = 0.77),proton-pump inhibitor use (P = 0.73),receipt of antibiotics (P = 0.66),and receipt of DNA hypomethylating agent-based chemotherapy (P = 0.92) were not significantly associated with *** CDI is common in the MDS/AML *** significantly associated with CDI in this population include low albumin,prior CDI,use of cytarabine-based chemotherapy,and prolonged *** this study,we have identified a subset of patients in which prophylaxis studies could be targeted.
