Effects of Spatial Row Arrangement and Time of Planting Intercrops on Performance of Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) under Maize (Zea mays L.)—Groundnut Intercropping System in Ejura

In monoculture, crop failure due to biotic or abiotic causes can result in partial or total output failure. The yield, socio-economic, and environmental effects of intercropping on the farmer and the environment as a whole have not received much attention. There is a dearth of knowledge on the productivity of maize-groundnut intercrops in Ghana regarding the relative timing of planting and spatial arrangement of component crops. Therefore, the objective of the study was to determine the effects of spatial row arrangement and the time of planting intercrops on the productivity of groundnut under maize-groundnut intercropping. The 5 × 3 factorial field experiment was undertaken at the Miminaso community in the Ejura-Sekyedumase municipality of the Ashanti Region of Ghana during the 2020 cropping seasons. Treatments were evaluated in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. The levels of row arrangement of intercrops were: one row of maize and one row of groundnut (1M1G), one row of maize and two rows of groundnut (1M2G), two rows of maize and one row of groundnut (2M1G), two rows of maize and two rows of groundnut (2M2G), sole maize and sole groundnut (M/G). The levels of time of introducing groundnut included simultaneous planting of intercrops (0 WAP), planting groundnut one week after planting maize (1 WAP) and planting groundnut two weeks after planting maize (2 WAP). There were significant (P 0.05) treatment interactions for pod and seed yields of groundnut throughout the study. The highest groundnut pod yields of 1815.00 kg/ha and 2359.00 kg/ha were recorded by the 0WAP × 1M2G treatment in the major and minor seasons of 2020, respectively, while the highest groundnut seed yields of 741.00 kg/ha and 726.00 kg/ha were recorded in the major and minor rainy seasons of 2020 by 1WAP × G and 0WAP × G treatments, respectively. Soil fertility continues to decline in Ghana due to unsustainable human activities like bush burning, quarrying, improper farming practices, among others. To resolve this challenge, crop farmers resort to continuous use of mineral fertilizers in Ghana, which contaminates the environment and makes crop farming less sustainable and productive. One of the strategies to improve soil fertility and productivity for sustainable crop yields is intercropping. Studies were, therefore, undertaken at Miminaso in the Ejura-Sekyedumase municipality of Ashanti Region of Ghana during the 2020 cropping seasons to determine the effects of spatial row arrangement and time of planting maize and groundnut intercrops on productivity of maize and land equivalent ratio (LER). One row of maize and one row of groundnut (1M1G), one row of maize and two rows of groundnut (1M2G), two rows of maize and one row of groundnut (2M1G), two rows of maize and two rows of groundnut (2M2G), sole maize (M) and sole groundnut (G) were factorially arranged with concurrent planting of intercrops (0 WAP), planting groundnut one week after planting maize (1 WAP) and planting groundnut two weeks after planting maize (2 WAP) in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replicates. There were significant treatment interaction (P < 0.05) effects for shelling percentage for maize in both seasons of the trial. In the major season of 2020, the highest shelling percentage of 79.30% was associated with 0 WAP × M, while in the minor season of 2020, the highest shelling percentage of 75.02% was recorded by 0 WAP × 2M1G. The treatment interaction effects for maize grain yield were significant only in the minor season of 2020 with the highest maize grain yield of 6341 kg/ha being produced by the sole maize treatment, followed by 1 WAP × 2M2G (6152 kg/ha). 【BACKGROUND】Rice straw impacts rice productivity and ***,large amount of researches focused on the effects of tillage managements and straw incorporation on soil fertility and grain ***,the interaction of annual straw returned to the field and tillage patterns received less attention.【MATERIALS AND METHODS】 In this study,field experiments about annual straw returning(total straw returning,as "-S";and no straw returning as control) and tillage managements(annual rotary tillage,as "RT" and annual plowing tillage,as "PT") were carried out(located Jiangxi province Yujiang city since 2008) on the double cropping rice region in south of *** productivity,greenhouse gas emissions(CH,NO),soil carbon sequestration and net greenhouse potential were measured.【RESULTS】The results showed that straw returningincreased the early rice yield by 12.1%,while there was no significant effect on the annual yield,in addition,straw returning made up for the grain yield decline caused by fully long-term plowing *** the rotary tillage,straw returning significantly increased the late rice season methane(CH) emission and global warming potential(GWP) by 33.2%and30.6%,respectively,while showedless affect at the early rice *** the other hand,there was no significant effectof straw returning on CH and GWP in the two rice seasons under plowing ***-tillageaveragely reduced GWP and GHGI value entiretwo yearsdouble ricecroppingby 45.1%and 31.8%significantly when compared with plowing *** terms of medium and long effects,the annual carbon sequestration rate of 0-20 cm soil layer under rotary tillage with straw returning could reach up to 635.2 kg CO-eq haa,and was significantly83.3%higher,alsothe net greenhouse gaspotential was significantly 58%greater than that in PT.【CONCLUSION】The present study suggested that,under the fully annual straw returning,reasonable tillage patterns(such as plowing) could be effective to mitigate g

【Objective】Fertilization has been widely used as a common management practice to maintain soil fertility and crop productivity. However, the continual uses of fertilizers possess serious threat to the environment because of greenhouse gas emissions(GHG) and its impact on global warming. The main objective of the study which is still ongoing was to study the impact of soil fertility management on NO and NH emissions as well as nitrogen use efficiency(NUE) in a long term double maize cropping system in Southern China. 【Method】To achieve this five treatments comprising of control-CK, organic manure-OM, nitrogen only-N, NPK and NPK +OM-NPKM were selected in a randomly complete block design with three replications. 【Result】In all, there are four seasons with two already completed. Preliminary results indicated that OM and NPKM had the highest NO and NH emissions that could impact negatively on the environment. The peak emission for NO was recorded around the 4th week after fertilization but NH volatilization peaked on the 3rd day. The tentative results also indicated that OM was more efficient in using nitrogen fertilizer and N was the least. NPKM treatment has so far recorded the highest yield with N still trailing. The soil p H, temperature and moisture significantly affected the parameters measured. 【Conclusion】Tentatively it can be concluded that OM fertility management is the best choice for the rain fed area since it had the highest NUE, less GHG emissions with respect to NPKM and yield not significantly different from NPKM.

Energy model based on solar potential and the production of electrical energy through living plants' photosynthesis

Developing a sustainable energy model is imperative considering the current trend towards decarbonizing sectors worldwide. For this purpose, Venezuela was used as a reference to propose an energy model focused on taking advantage of plant photosynthesis through microbial-vegetable fuel cells together with an agro-photovoltaic system to enhance energy and agricultural production. Energy production from the cells was estimated using an average power density of 264 mW/m(2) over 4% of the areas destined for crops in the entire Venezuelan region, obtaining an annual production of 19.889 GWh/year. In contrast, the energy production of the agro-photovoltaic system was modelled using PVsyst software on 50% of the area used for the cells distributed throughout the states of Anzo & aacute;tegui, Gu & aacute;rico, Monagas and Portuguesa according to their meteorological conditions, solar irradiation and agricultural activity, resulting in 3 703 417 GWh/year. The resulting whole system proved to be able to cover >10 times the installed electricity generation capacity at a national level and, together with the tremendous scalability of the microbial fuel cells, it shows that Venezuela has a high potential for the production and distribution of clean energy. Assessment of scale interactions associated with wake meandering using bispectral analysis methodologies

Large atmospheric boundary layer fluctuations and smaller turbine-scale vorticity dynamics are separately hypothesized to initiate the wind turbine wake meandering phenomenon,a coherent,dynamic,turbine-scale oscillation of the far *** interactions,the mechanism of energy transfers between scales,manifest as triples of wavenumbers or frequencies and can be characterized through bispectral *** bispectrum,which correlates the two frequencies to their sum,is calculated by two recently developed multi-dimensional modal decomposition methods:scale-specific energy transfer method and bispectral mode ***-eddy simulation of a utility-scale wind turbine in an atmospheric boundary layer with a broad range of large length-scales is used to acquire instantaneous velocity *** bispectrum from both methods identifies prominent upwind and wake meandering interactions that create a broad range of energy scales including the wake meandering *** coherent kinetic energy associated with the interactions shows strong correlation between upwind scales and wake meandering.

Over the past two decades,machine learning techniques have been extensively used in predicting reservoir *** this approach has significantly contributed to the industry,selecting an appropriate model is still challenging for most *** solely on statistical metrics to select the best model for a particular problem may not always be the most effective *** study encourages researchers to incorporate data visualization in their analysis and model selection *** evaluate the suitability of different models in predicting horizontal permeability in the Volve field,wireline logs were used to train Extra-Trees,Ridge,Bagging,and XGBoost *** Random Forest feature selection technique was applied to select the relevant logs as inputs for the *** on statistical metrics,the Extra-Trees model achieved the highest test accuracy of 0.996,RMSE of 19.54 mD,and MAE of 3.18 mD,with XGBoost coming in ***,when the results were visualised,it was discovered that the XGBoost model was more suitable for the problem being *** XGBoost model was a better predictor within the sandstone interval,while the Extra-Trees model was more appropriate in non-sandstone *** this study aims to predict permeability in the reservoir interval,the XGBoost model is the most *** contrasting results demonstrate the importance of incorporating data visualisation techniques as an evaluation *** the heterogeneity of the subsurface,relying solely on statistical metrics may not be sufficient to determine which model is best suited for a particular problem.
