Stability of Spike Solutions to the Fractional Gierer-Meinhardt System in a One-Dimensional Domain

In this paper we consider the existence and stability of multi-spike solutions to the fractional Gierer-Meinhardt model with periodic boundary *** particular we rigorously prove the existence of symmetric and asymmetric twospike solutions using a Lyapunov-Schmidt *** linear stability of these two-spike solutions is then rigorously analyzed and found to be determined by the eigenvalues of a certain 2×2 *** rigorous results are complemented by formal calculations of N-spike solutions using the method of matched asymptotic *** addition,we explicitly consider examples of one-and two-spike solutions for which we numerically calculate their relevant existence and stability *** considering a one-spike solution we determine that the introduction of fractional diffusion for the activator or inhibitor will respectively destabilize or stabilize a single spike solution with respect to oscillatory ***,when considering two-spike solutions we find that the range of parameter values for which asymmetric two-spike solutions exist and for which symmetric two-spike solutions are stable with respect to competition instabilities is expanded with the introduction of fractional inhibitor *** our calculations indicate that asymmetric two-spike solutions are always linearly unstable.

Background: Coupling biomass models with nutrient concentrations can provide sound estimations of carbon and nutrient contents, enabling the improvement of carbon and nutrient balance in forest ecosystems. Although nutrient concentrations are often assumed to be constant for some species and specific tree components, at least in mature stands,the concentrations usually vary with age, site index and even with tree density. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the sources of variation in nutrient concentrations in biomass compartments usually removed during harvesting operations, covering a range of species and management conditions: semi-natural forest, conventional forest plantations and short rotation forestry(SRF). Five species(Betula pubescens, Quercus robur, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus nitens and Populus spp.) and 14 genotypes were considered. A total of 430 trees were sampled in 61 plots to obtain 6 biomass components:leaves, twigs, thin branches, thick branches, bark and wood. Aboveground leafless biomass was pooled together *** concentrations of C, N, K, P, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and B were measured and the total biomass of each sampled tree and plot were determined. The data were analysed using boosted regression trees and conventional ***: The main sources of variation in nutrient concentrations were biomass component > > genotype(species) ≈ age >tree diameter. The concentrations of Ca, Mg and K were most strongly affected by genotype and age. The concentrations of P, K, Ca, Mg, S and Cu in the wood component decreased with age, whereas C concentrations increased, with a trend to reach 50% in the older trees. In the SRF, interamerican poplar and P. trichocarpa genotypes were comparatively more efficient in terms of Ca and K nutrient assimilation index(NAI)(+65-85%) than eucalypts, mainly because leafless biomass can be removed. AIM To study tumor response, and tolerability of arterially directed embolic therapy(ADET) with polyethylene glycol embolics loaded with irinotecan for the treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastases(CRC-LM). Secondary objectives were to monitor quality of life, time to progression and survival of *** Patients were included in the study if they were affected by CRC-LM, refractory to systemic chemotherapy, treated with ADET using polyethylene glycol embolics, and had liver involvement < 50%. Tumor response, performance status(PS), tumor marker antigens, and quality of life(QoL) were monitored at 1, 3 and 6 mo after ADET. QoL was assessed with the Palliative Performance Scale(PPS).RESULTS We treated 50 consecutive CRC-LM patients with ADET using polyethylene glycol embolics. Their tumor response one month after ADET was: 28% of complete response(CR), 48% of partial response(PR), 8% stable disease(SD), and 16% of progression. Tumor response 3 mo after ADET was CR 24%, PR 38%, SD 19% and progression disease(PD) 19%. Tumor response 6 mo after ADET was CR 18%, PR 44%, SD 21% and PD 18%. QoL was 90% PPS at each time point. Median time to progression for patients who progressed was 2.5 mo(range 0.8-6). Median follow-up was 14 mo(0.8-25 range). ADETs were performed with no complications. Observed side effects(mild or moderate intensity) were: Pain in 32% of patients, increase of transaminase levels in 20% and fever in 14%, whereas 30% of patients did not complain any adverse event. CONCLUSION The treatment of unresectable CRC-LM with ADET using polyethylene glycol microspheres loaded with irinotecan was effective in tumor response and resulted in mild toxicity, and good QoL.

Comparing techniques for measuring corticosterone in tadpoles

Glucocorticoids play a key role in mediating stress responses in vertebrates. Corticosterone （CORT） is the main glucocorticoid produced in amphibians, birds, and reptiles, and regulates several metabolic functions. The most common methods for quantifying CORT are competitive binding immunoassays： radioimmunoassay （RIA） and enzyme immunoassay （EIA）. RIA has been broadly used since the 1980＇s but it requires radioactivity. Commercial EIA kits permit quantifying hormone levels without radioactivity although the requirement for a larger sample volume may be a strong limitation for measurements involving larval amphibians. Here we used Xenopus laevis tadpoles to compare the performance of three commonly used procedures for determination of CORT： RIA on a chloroform extract of whole-body homogenate, EIA on plasma, and EIA on supematant of whole-body homogenate. We treated tadpoles with exogenous CORT at 0, 25, 50, and 100 nM. RIA could distinguish between 0 and 25 nM, and EIA on plasma between 0 and 50 nM, whereas whole-body homogenate EIA only detected significant differences between 0 and 100 riM. Each procedure presents advantages and disadvantages regarding sensitivity, the use of radioactivity, sample size, handling time, and economic cost. RIA is preferred when studying small-bodied animals from which blood samples cannot be obtained. When CORT level differences are intermediate and blood sampling is possible, EIA on plasma is a good non-radioactive alternative. EIA on whole-body homogenates may be useful to assess qualitative changes in CORT levels when considerable differences are expected. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of previous studies on CORT in amphibians [Current Zoology 61 （5）： 835-845, 2015].

The translation of the genotype into phenotype, represented for example by the expression of genes encod- ing enzymes required for the biosynthesis of phytochemicals that are important for interaction of plants with the environment, is largely carried out by transcription factors （TFs） that recognize specific cis-regulatory elements in the genes that they control. TFs and their target genes are organized in gene regulatory net- works （GRNs）, and thus uncovering GRN architecture presents an important biological challenge necessary to explain gene regulation. Linking TFs to the genes they control, central to understanding GRNs, can be car- ried out using gene- or TF-centered approaches. In this study, we employed a gene-centered approach uti- lizing the yeast one-hybrid assay to generate a network of protein-DNA interactions that participate in the transcriptional control of genes involved in the biosynthesis of maize phenolic compounds including gen- eral phenylpropanoids, lignins, and flavonoids. We identified 1100 protein-DNA interactions involving 54 phenolic gene promoters and 568 TFs. A set of 11 TFs recognized 10 or more promoters, suggesting a role in coordinating pathway gene expression. The integration of the gene-centered network with informa- tion derived from TF-centered approaches provides a foundation for a phenolics GRN characterized by in- terlaced feed-forward loops that link developmental regulators with biosynthetic genes.

Nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer(nmCRPC)-defined as prostate-specific antigen(PSA)>2 ng/mL,testosterone castration levels<1.7 nm/L,and the absence of metastatic lesions on conventional imaging(computed tomography or bone scan)-has been defined as a lethal disease by the Prostate Cancer Work ***-third of patients with prostate cancer who receive androgen deprivation therapy for biochemical recurrence after local treatment will develop CRPC,with death occurring an average of 2.5 years after diagnosis of castration *** patients diagnosed with nmCRPC are asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic at diagnosis due to local *** patients with short PSA doubling times(<10 mo)and high baseline PSA levels,there is a high risk of bone metastases followed by prostate cancer-related *** patients also present significant morbidity that negatively impacts quality of life(QoL).Recently,the results of three randomized trials(PROSPER,SPARTAN,and ARAMIS)were *** trials evaluated the efficacy of three different androgen receptor inhibitors-enzalutamide,apalutamide,and darolutamide-in patients with *** all three trials,the study drugs improved both metastasis-free survival and overall survival compared to placebo,plus on-going androgen deprivation therapy without a negative impact on *** patients with nmCRPC,the most important clinical objective is early detection and treatment to maintain a low tumor burden and to prolong the symptom-free *** patients with nmCRPC,these novel drugs offer new hope for better QoL and survival outcomes.
