Morphometric Characterization of the Grasshopper Sparrow (<i>Ammodramus savannarum</i>) and Baird’s Sparrow (<i>Ammodramus bairdii</i>) during the Wintering Season

Grassland bird populations have decline. more than any other group of bird species in North America. Some species such as the grasshopper (Ammodramus savannarum) and Baird’s sparrows (Ammodramus bairdii) are of particular conservation concern, since they have shown ne.ative trends in their population over the last 50 years. Their winter ecology has only begun to be studied recently and information is limited. The purpose of this study is to achieve the morphometric characterization of these two grassland species during the wintering season. The study is conducted in the Rancho Santa Teresa located in Villa Hidalgo, Durango, Mexico and the Ecological reserve “El Uno”, located in Janos, Chihuahua, Mexico. During winter 2013-2014, 135 birds were captured;banded and zoometric measurements were taken such as total body weight, wing chord, tail length, culmen, and beak depth and width. Two indices of body condition (BCI) are also calculated. All measurements and indices are compared per species and per sex. Both species are sexed with molecular techniques, determining 20 females and 18 males for A. bairdii and 41 females and 56 males for A. savannarum. All variables are significant different between species (p ot significantly different when comparing birds of different sexes (same species), with the exception of beak width of A. bairdii (p ord, tail length, as well as one.of the body condition indices (BCI2) are significantly higher (p or both species. BCI1 shows significant differences (p ometric data obtaine. in this study can be used as reference values wintering populations of both species.

BACKGRoUND Colorectal cancer(CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide. It is broadly described that cyclooxygenase-2(CoX-2) is mainly overexpressed in CRC but less is known regarding post-translational modifications of this enzyme that may regulate its activity, intracellular localization and stability. Since metabolic and proteomic profile analysis is essential for cancer prognosis and diagnosis, our hypothesis is that the analysis of correlations between these specific parameters and CoX-2 state in tumors of a high number of CRC patients could be useful for the understanding of the basis of this cancer in *** To analyze CoX-2 regulation in colorectal cancer and to perform a detailed analysis of their metabolic and proteomic *** Biopsies from both healthy and pathological colorectal tissues were taken under informed consent from patients during standard colonoscopy procedure in the University Hospital of Bellvitge(Barcelona, Spain) and Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital(Campus Can Ruti)(Barcelona, Spain). Western blot analysis was used to determine.CoX-2 levels. Deglycosylation assays were performed in both cells and tumor samples incubating each sample with peptide N-glycosidase F(PNGase F). Prostaglandin E2(PGE2) levels were determine. using a specific ELISA. 1 H high resolution magic angle spinning(HRMAS) analysis was performed using a Bruker AVIII 500 MHz spectrometer and proteomic analysis was performed in a nano-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer(nano LC-MS/MS) using a QExactive HF orbitrap *** our data show that CoX-2 has a differential expression profile in tumor tissue of CRC patients vs the adjacent non-tumor area, which correspond to a glycosylated and less active state of the protein. Detecting Climate Change in Using Extreme Data from Two Surface Weather Stations: Case Study Valle of Comitan and La Esperanza, Chiapas, Mexico

The study area is located between the cities of Comitan (16°10'43"N and 92°04'20''W) a city with 150,000 inhabitants and La Esperanza (16°9'15''N and 91°52'5''W) a town with 3000 inhabitants. Both weather stations are 30 km from each other in the Chiapas State, México. 54 years of daily records of the series of maximum (tmax) and minimum temperatures (tmin) of the weather station 07205 Comitan that is on top of a house and 30 years of daily records of the weather station 07374 La Esperanza were analyzed. The objective is to analyze the evidence of climate change in the Comitan valley. 2.07% and 19.04% of missing data were filled, respectively, with the WS method. In order to verify homogene.ty three methods were used: Standard Normal Homogene.ty Test (SNHT), the Von ne.mann method and the Buishand method. The heterogene.us series were homogenized using climatol. The trends of tmax and tmin for both weather stations were analyzed by simple line.r regression, Sperman’s rho and Mann-Kendall tests. The Mann-Kendal test method confirmed the warming trend at the Comitan station for both variables with ZMK statistic values equal to 1.57 (statistically not significant) and 4.64 (statistically significant). However, for the Esperanza station, it determine. a cooling trend for tmin and a slight non-significant warming for tmax with a ZMK statistic of -2.27 (statistically significant) and 1.16 (statistically not significant), for a significance level α = 0.05.

Memory AND effector cells in children with bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts

Infections in infants and children under five years of age are a public health in México and are one.of the major causes of death. Methods In this study, lymphocyte immunophenotyping for CD3+ (T-cells), CD3+CD4+, CD3+CD8+, CD3+CD19+, CD3+CD16/56+, CD45RA+, CD45Ro+, CD62L- and CD28- were determine. in the whole blood of gastrointestinal and respiratory bacterial infected children, using a four-color flow cytometry technique. Results: our data showed that the percentages and the absolute numbers of monocytes and granulocytes are increased in infected children, when compared to the control group. Similarly, we observed increases in the percentages of B lymphocytes, CD8+ cells, memory T cells (CD4+CD45Ro+ and CD8+CD45Ro+) and effector lymphocytes (CD4+CD62L? and CD8+CD28?) in infected children compared with the control group. In contrast, naive T cells were decreased in the bacterial infected children relative to the control group. Additionally, we used ELISA assays to identify the pathogen agent in gastrointestinal and respiratory infection. Comparing different types of infection, we found that the children with respiratory bacterial infections had higher percentages of B lymphocytes, and cytotoxic lymphocytes (CD8+CD28-);and the children with gastrointestinal infections had higher percentages of CD3+ lymphocytes and effector cells (CD4+CD62L-). Conclusions The increase in B lymphocytes and CD8+CD28- cells in the children with respiratory infections and the increase of T lymphocytes and CD4+CD62L- cells in the children with gastrointestinal bacterial infections indicate that both cellular and humoral responses coincide, and both responses are ne.essary for eliminating the pathogen.

AIM To assess the viability of orthotopic and heterotopic patient-derived pancreatic cancer xenografts implanted into nude *** This study presents a prospective experimental analytical follow-up of the development of tumours in mice upon implantation of human pancreatic adenocarcinoma samples. Specimens were obtaine. surgically from patients with a pathological diagnosis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Tumour samples from pancreatic cancer patients were transplanted into nude mice in three different locations(intraperitone.l, subcutane.us and pancreatic). Histological analysis(haematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome staining) and immunohistochemical assessment of apoptosis(TUne.), proliferation(Ki-67), angiogene.is(CD31) and fibrogene.is(α-SMA) were performed. When a tumour xenograft reached the target size, it was reimplanted in a ne. nude mouse. Three sequential tumour xenograft gene.ations were gene.ated(F1, F2 and F3).RESULTS The overall tumour engraftment rate was 61.1%. The subcutane.us model was most effective in terms of tissue growth(69.9%), followed by intraperitone.l(57.6%) and pancreatic(55%) models. Tumour development was faster in the subcutane.us model(17.7 ± 2.6 wk) compared with the pancreatic(23.1 ± 2.3 wk) and intraperitone.l(25.0 ± 2.7 wk) models(P = 0.064). There was a progressive increase in the tumour engraftment rate over successive gene.ations for all three models(F1 28.1% vs F2 71.4% vs F3 80.9%, P o significant differences in tumour xenograft differentiation and cell proliferation between human samples and the three experimental models among the sequential gene.ations of tumour xenografts. However, a progressive decrease in fibrosis, fibrogene.is, tumour vascularisation and apoptosis was observed in the three experimental models compared with the human samples. Corriente River is part of the middle Parana basin and it is an inland river of the Corrientes Province of Argentine. This paper studies variation in time of some physicochemical parameters (conductivity, alkalinity, hardne.s, sulfates and chlorides) measured between 1998 and 2014. The correlations of the data correspond to three fixed stations monitoring. The analysis of results takes into account the influence of the seasonal rainfall patterns regimes as determinants in the natural composition of the water resources studied. Moreover composition of the river has been registered as a valid reference to predict probable changes by human activity.

Phenolic metabolism and molecular mass distribution of polysaccharides in cellulose-deficient maize cells

As a consequence of the habituation to low levels of dichlobenil （DCB）, cultured maize cells presented an altered hemicellulose cell fate with a lower proportion of strongly wall-bound hemicelluloses and an increase in soluble extracellular polymers released into the culture medium. The aim of this study was to investigate the relative molecular mass distributions of polysaccharides as well as phenolic metabolism in cells habituated to low levels of DCB （1.5 μM）. Gene.ally, cell wall bound hemicelluloses and sloughed polymers from habituated cells were more homogene.usly sized and had a lower weight-average relative molecular mass. In addition, polysaccharides underwent massive cross-linking after being secreted into the cell wall, but this cross-linking was less pronounced in habituated cells than in non-habituated one.. However, when relativized, ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid contents were higher in this habituated cell line. Feasibly, cells habituated to low levels of DCB synthesized molecules with a lower weight-average relative molecular mass, although cross-linked, as a part of their strategy to compensate for the lack of cellulose.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected persons, are at high risk for developing a bloodstream infection. In order to evaluate the usefulne.s of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PTC) in the detection of bloodstream infection in HIV, a case-control study was conducted from February to December 2012. PCT and CPR levels were measured in 2 groups. PCT concentrations were measured by the VIDAS®?Brahms PCT assay, and CRP concentrations were determine. by CRP latex. Values were calculated for both biomarkers and discriminative ability of PCT and CRP was analyzed using RoC curves. There were no significant differences between the study group and the control groups with respect to CRP levels. However, they were much higher PCT levels in patients with bacteremia. PCT showed greater discriminating ability compared to CRP, and proved to be a valuable tool for the detection of systemic bacterial infections in HIV infected patients.

The Collapse of Culverts-Arch in Several Cities around the World, Technical Arguments for Their Maintenance and a Legal Proposal for Prohibiting Their Construction in Mexico

Construction underground pipes and underground culvertsarch (UCA) in order to transport the flow natural rivers and city’s sewage at the same time, is a practice that should be prohibited by the Mexico National Water Law (NWL). When UCA collapse, it causes severe damage to surrounding infrastructure, public and private property, and puts citizens’ lives at risk. This work presents some examples of UCA collapse incidents in several cities around the world, emphasizes how important preventive maintenance of these structures is, highlights the ne.d to classify risk areas, and stresses the ne.d to formulate norms and civil defense plans as article 83 of the NWL suggests. We also propose an addition to Fraction I, article 100 of the National Water Law, to protect the animal and plant life of its banks and safety of their natural runoff.
