Synthesis and Characterization of laNixCo1-xO3 Perovskites via Complex Precursor Methods

This work presents a study on the synthesis of laNixCo1-xO3 perovskites via complex precursor methods. Perovskite oxides with the composition laNixCo1-xO3 were synthesized by chelating precursor and polymeric precursor methods using nickel and/or cobalt nitrates, lanthanum nitrate, ethylene glycol, citric acid, and EDTA as starting source. The obtained perovskite were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and the morphology of the samples were investigated by N2 adsorption experiments and average medium particle size. TG curves and FTIR spectra were particularly useful in establishing of the optimal calcination temperature of the precursor powders. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of the perovskite structure in all samples prepared by both synthesis method and after calcinations at 700℃. The results showed that the preparation method resulted in oxides with the intended structure. The specific surface area values were influenced by preparation method.

Gastric cancer is considered one of the most deadly tumors worldwide. Even with the decline in its incidence, the mortality rate of this disease has remained high, mainly due to its late diagnosis and to the lack of precise prognostic markers. The main purpose of this review is to present genetic, epigenetic and proteomic molecular markers that may be used in a diagnostic and prognostic manner and to discuss the pros and cons of each type of marker for improving clinical practice. In this sense, we observed that the use of genetic markers, especially mutations and polymorphisms, should be carefully considered, as they are strongly affected by ethnicity. Proteomic-based markers show promise, but the higher costs of the associated techniques con-tinue to make this approach expensive for routine use. Alternatively, epigenetic markers appear to be very promising, as they can be detected in bodily fluids as well as tissues. However, such markers must be used carefully because epigenetic changes may occur due to environmental factors and aging. Despite the advances in technology and its access, to date, there are few defined biomarkers of prognostic and diagnostic use for gastric tumors. Therefore, the use of a panel of several approaches(genetic, epigenetic and proteomic) should be considered the best alternative for clinical practice.

Angiotensin-(1 - 7) [Ang-(1 - 7)] is an endogenous heptapeptide hormone of the renin-angiotensin system that has antiproliferative properties. The aim of this work was to evaluate the anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic properties of Ang-(1 - 7) and of Ang-(1 - 7)-substituents 9-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl (Fmoc) e Ang II-derivatives containing the TOAC (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl-4-amino-4-carboxylic acid) in normal (MCF10A) and in tumoral (MCF7) epithelial mammary cell lines. Both cell lines received an hCG and angiotensin peptides 24-hour treatment, in combination or alone followed by cell viability, apoptosis and cell cycle assays performed by flow cytometer (GUAVA). After hCG, Ang-(1 - 7), hCG + Ang-(1 - 7) and hCG + Ang-(1 - 7)-Fmoc treatments, MCF7 displayed cell viability decrease and mid-apoptosis increase. We also observed cell viability decrease in MCF10A after Ang-(1 - 7), Ang-(1 - 7) Fmoc and hCG + AngII Toac treatments. These cells had an increase in late apoptosis and necrosis after AngII Toac, hCG + Ang-(1 - 7) and hCG + Ang-(1 - 7)-Fmoc treatments. Regarding the cell cycle analysis, we did not observed any changes in cell cycle phases. In summary, cell viability was decreased and apoptosis (initial, mid and late) was increased after hCG and/or Ang-(1 - 7) peptides treatments. These results point out hCG and Ang-(1 - 7) as effective compounds to inhibit cell proliferation, since they decrease cell viability and increase apoptosis in both normal and in tumoral breast cells, being the effect more pronounced in the tumoral cell line. Our results support the idea of investigating more closely the putative use of these compounds as novel therapeutic agents for breast cancer.

Aim: To evaluate data related to mental work functioning of workers with cancer diagnosis in radiotherapy in a private service in the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Method: It consists in a cross-sectional, observational and analytical study with comparison between cancer patients and healthy people, using the Brazilian version of the Work Role Functioning Questionnaire (WRFQ-Br). Descriptive and statistical analysis is performed by the Mann-Whitney test. Results: There was a significant difference between the groups in the evaluation of mental demand;however, the population diagnosed with malignant neoplasm submitted to radiotherapy had unexpected higher scores, reflecting lower mental exigency. Conclusions: The observed context may occur due to extensive support of family, government and interdisciplinary team of health care for individuals diagnosed with cancer. This data provide support for new research studies related to the importance of the work to promote mental health, considering aspects related to social interaction and productivity as the support system members. The importance of disseminating these results and limitation is based in the necessity of investments to improve research and actions to promote the permanence and early return to work for cancer survivors in Brazil and latin America.

Comparison of Three Experimental Models for Rat Osteoarthritis Induction

Background: Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressive and debilitating disease with high prevalence in adult population. Knee is one of the joints most affected by this disorder. There are several models for animals’ osteoarthritis induction, however it is not identified any paper that compares these techniques. The present study was aimed to define the most appropriate model for rats osteoarthritis induction. Material and Methods: 40 Wistar rats were distributed into 4 groups of 10 animals each: normality group (NG);meniscectomy group (MG);quinolone group (QG) and iodoacetate group (IG). Radiographic images of the rat’s knees were analyzed as well as the amount of chondrocytes in the epiphyseal and articular cartilage. Results: In the radiographic analysis, there was a low correlation between the raters. Regarding the amount of chondrocytes in the epiphyseal cartilage, it was noticed that the IG and QG groups had fewer chondrocytes than NG, in contrast to MG that reported similar results to normality (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between IG and QG groups (p > 0.05). Regarding the amount of chondrocytes in articular cartilage, it was noticed that the IG group showed fewer chondrocytes than NG (p 0.05). There was no significant difference between QG and MG groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Intraarticular injection of iodoacetate in rats is the model with greatest effect on reduction of chondrocytes amount.

BACKGROUND Superior mesenteric artery syndrome(SMAS)is a rare condition,characterized by duodenal obstruction caused by compression of its third part by the superior mesenteric artery(SMA).Most cases of SMAS are associated with weight loss,and the most frequent clinical manifestations are nausea,vomiting,postprandial fullness,and abdominal *** of SMAS is usually conservative,consisting mainly of adequate nutritional support,but in refractory cases surgery may be necessary,with gastrojejunostomy and duodenojejunostomy being the most commonly performed *** SUMMARY We describe the case of a man in his forties with a pre-existing diagnosis of esophageal stricture due to sodium hydroxide ingestion,who suffered significant weight loss after replacement of his jejunostomy *** was admitted to the hospital due to pain and abdominal distension.A computerized tomography scan showed significant distension of the stomach and duodenum with narrowing of the duodenum at the point at which it is crossed by the superior mesenteric artery,thus establishing the diagnosis of *** to the presence of the esophageal stricture,the patient was incapable of emesis;however,passage of a nasogastric tube for decompression was not *** the risk of gastric perforation due to distention,we opted for surgical treatment in the form of a surgical gastrojejunostomy after which he showed complete resolution of all symptoms and was discharged from the hospital 5 d after the *** Diagnosis of SMAS can be challenging in patients with esophageal stenosis,and risk of gastric perforation may preclude conservative treatment.

Soybean is the most produced oil crop in the world, with great increase in its annual production as well as great generation of waste from its industrialization. The soybean hulls can be used for the elaboration of products such as carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), adding high value to this residue and it can be used as a coating polymer in seeds. The objective of this work was to analyze the physiological quality of soybean seeds treated with CMC and fungicide, recording images to verify the effectiveness of the coating in the seeds. The experiment was randomized into factorial scheme 2 × 4 with four replicates, two soybean cultivars M-7110 and M-7739 and four types of coating: without (control), CMC, fungicide and fungicide/CMC. The variables analyzed were: vigor (first count), germination test, accelerated aging, length and dry mass of the radicle and hypocotyl length. The images were made with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with zoom of 50 and 200 times. The CMC used alone or with fungicide, provided good physiological quality of soybean seeds. In some analyzes there was difference between the cultivars M 7110 and M 7739. The combination of CMC and fungicide provided a better coating on the seeds.

Before the 70s, in Brazil, each city had its morbidly obese, considered as the “excessive fats”, in very small numbers if we compare it with the current percentage. There was no classification of the degree of obesity by the body mass index (BMI) as we have today. By chance, on a Saturday in June 1975, at the Outpatient Clinic of the 23rd Infirmary of Santa Casa da Misericórdia Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, arrived the patient I. S., 41 years old, 1.70 m tall, supported by her two children, weighing 210 kg in weight body. Knowing that bariatric surgery only appeared in the 1980s, before that, patients with morbid obesity were left to their own devices, with hypertension and diabetes. The patient I. S. was hospitalized for 3 years in our Plastic Surgery Service, having received nutritional monitoring, had sporadic discharges and undergone 9 reparative plastic surgeries. She was discharged weighing 71 kg, with self-esteem recovered and happy to start a new life, without hypertension and diabetes.

Topographical Analysis of Frontal Lobe Executive Functions in Patients Following a Stroke

Objective: This study aimed to carry out a topographical analysis of frontal lobe executive function components in post-stroke patients. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study. The assessment using the WCST (Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) included sixteen patients with a clinical diagnosis of CVA and frontal lobe impairment. Results from the two groups were compared (patients with right frontal lobe impairment and patients with left frontal lobe impairment). Statistical analysis was performed using the program “Statistical Package for Social Sciences” (SPSS) Version 20.0. For comparison between groups was used Mann-Whitney test and considered the alpha level of 0.05 on the statistically significant results. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups, thus showing that executive functions are symmetrically distributed across the frontal lobes. Conclusion: Executive functions are symmetrically organized across the two frontal lobes, since the comparison between the groups did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference for any of the variables of WSCT.
