This study investigated a newly developed soft-type turtle releasing device(Soft-TRD)for *** setnet fish chambers(bag nets)are open at the sea surface,while others are closed(with ceiling netting)and *** turtles that stray into submerged bag nets often drown because the ceiling netting prevents them from swimming up to the surface to *** Soft-TRD has a slit that functions as an escape outlet at the center of a 2 m×2 m *** escape slit remains closed,due to the buoyancy of a float attached at each end of the slit,and prevents fish from getting *** can push the escape slit upward,which opens and allows the turtles to *** decide the optimum design of the Soft-TRD,a turtle releasing trial was conducted in an outdoor water *** loggerhead turtles(Caretta caretta)(standard carapace length(SCL):67.1-72.8 cm)and five green turtles(Chelonia mydas)(SCL:42.4-63.4 cm)were used for the trial.A single turtle was placed into the experimental bag net where the Soft-TRD(six models in total)was mounted at the center part of the ceiling,and its behavior was *** turtles successfully escaped the model with a 150 cm length escape slit,10 cm overlaying width,and a 4 kgf buoyancy float at each *** escape slit immediately closed after the turtles escaped.A sea trial(same model)was also performed using a submerged bag net(30×10×10 m)for two *** 90%(seven of the eight)of the entrapped loggerhead turtles successfully escaped out through the *** was not interrupted by the introduction of this *** use of the Soft-TRD would be helpful in releasing sea turtles from the setnets and contribute to sea turtle conservation efforts.

Clinical and computed tomography findings of appendiceal diverticulitis vs acute appendicitis

AIM: To study the clinical features and computed tomography(CT) findings of appendiceal diverticulitis vs acute ***: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 451 patients who had undergone appendectomy inour in stitution from January 2007 to September 2012. Patient demographics, clinical features, pathological findings, and surgical outcomes were analyzed. We also compared preoperative CT images of 25 patients with appendiceal diverticulitis with those of 25 patients with acute ***: Among 451 patients, 44(9.7%) were diagnosed to have appendiceal diverticulitis and 398(86.9%) to have acute appendicitis. Patients with appendiceal diverticulitis were older(59 vs 37 years, P < 0.001) and had a longer duration of the illness(4.0 d vs 1.0 d, P < 0.001). Perforation rates in patients with appendiceal diverticulitis were higher(68% vs 27%, P < 0.001). The appendix could be visualized in only 13 patients(52%) among the appendiceal diverticulitis cases, but in all acute appendicitis cases. CT findings suggestive of appendiceal diverticulitis included the absence of fluid collection in the appendix(84% vs 12%, P < 0.001), absence of appendicolith(92% vs 52%, P = 0.005), and formation of abscess(68% vs 16%, P < 0.001). Appendiceal diverticula were identified in 6 patients(24%).CONCLUSION: Among patients who had undergone appendectomy, 9.7% had appendiceal diverticulitis. Patients with appendiceal diverticulitis had different clinical features and CT findings from patients with acute appendicitis.

Renewable energy sources, including bioenergy, are presently attracting considerable attention as possible substitutes for fossil fuels. Among the various sources of bioenergy, biomass can arguably play a significant role in the reduction of greenhouse gases and the provision of a stable energy supply. However, the use of fossil fuels continues in the production of bioenergy. Consequently, the overall extent to which biomass utilization for energy can reduce carbon dioxide emissions as a substitute for fossil fuels and whether this can improve the energy self-sufficiency rate remains largely unknown. This study responds to these questions using a case of a Japanese rural community using firewood for residential heating. The results showed that woody biomass utilization for energy is able to both reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change. These findings offer new insights into the development of sustainability in rural communities.

Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is one of the most severe complications after pancreatic surgeries. POPF develops as a consequence of pancreatic juice leakage from a surgically exfoliated surface and/or anastomotic stump, which sometimes cause intraperitoneal abscesses and subsequent lethal hemorrhage. In recent years, various surgical and perioperative attempts have been examined to reduce the incidence of POPF. We reviewed several well-designed studies addressing POPF-related factors, such as reconstruction methods, anastomotic techniques, stent usage, prophylactic intra-abdominal drainage, and somatostatin analogs, after pancreaticoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy, and we assessed the current status of POPF. In addition, we also discussed the current status of POPF in minimally invasive surgeries, laparoscopic surgeries, and robotic surgeries.

BACKGROUND Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia(RLH)of the liver is a rare liver *** is considered difficult to differentiate radiologically from hepatocellular carcinoma,metastatic liver tumor and other *** SUMMARY A 54-year-old woman presented to our hospital with RLH of the *** patient had a diagnosis of metastatic carcinoma of the liver from an unknown origin and subsequently underwent partial ***,histopathological analysis revealed *** lesion showed perinodular enhancement in the arterial phase on contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance *** diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI),we encountered linear hyperintensity along the portal tract consecutive to the liver lesion,which is a new characteristic radiologic *** finding corresponded to the lymphoid cell infiltration of the portal ***,there was strongly restricted diffusion on the apparent diffusion coefficient *** used these characteristic radiologic findings to diagnose the lesion as a lymphoproliferative *** The linear hyperintensity consecutive to the liver lesion on DWI provided additional valuable diagnostic information.

MRI using gadolinium contrast media is useful in diagnosis;however, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a serious side effect of gadolinium exposure. Moreover, it turns out that gadolinium deposits in the brain. This has escalated the necessity for a suitable method to use gadolinium contrast media. I developed a new imaging method that had excellent contrast. This study examined the usefulness of that new imaging method and found the method is highly effective.
