During the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,the Japanese government implemented several infection control measures,such as states of emergency(SoE)and school closures,and encouraged universal masking and hand *** activity restrictions and improved hygiene were found to be associated with declines in the incidence of infuenza during the 2019–2020 winter season[1].Prior studies have found that the incidence of seven pediatric infections,such as pharyngoconjunctivitis and varicella,decreased during and after the school closures in Japan[2].As activity restrictions continue to be lifted,there is growing concern that pediatric infections may suddenly return given that the pool of susceptible children increased during the pandemic[3].In this study,we use national infectious disease sentinel data from January 2012 to October 2021 to assess changes in the reported number of pediatric infections in Japan during the COVID-19 *** hypothesize that the reporting of many infectious diseases decreased during the early stages of the pandemic but ultimately returned to normal when activity restrictions were lifted.

Umami: An Alternative Japanese Approach to Reducing Sodium While Enhancing Taste Desirability

COVID-19 has highlighted the underlying global burden from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the lack of resiliency in health systems to tackle highly preventable risk factors, which have left populations vulnerable to acute health crises. The persistent issue of unhealthy behaviors, particularly those related to a high-sodium diet, suggests inadequate policy attention and insufficient funding for public health and behavioral research. This year, Japan will host the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2021. The summit is being held in the era of COVID-19, offering a historic opportunity to make a difference on the global health agenda for food and nutrition and to reaffirm the global commitment to prevent future health crises by addressing the growing burden of NCDs and building better prepared and more resilient health systems. This perspective article suggests that we, global health researchers and decision-makers, should rethink the value of using “Umami” substances as candidates for a practical salt-reducing alternative that originated in Japan (while maintaining the affordability, accessibility, availability, and desirability of healthy food). Reduced salt intake will help address the global syndemic of COVID-19 pandemic and high rates of hypertension, heart diseases, diabetes, and other NCDs. By addressing these issues, it will make countries more resilient to future pandemic threats.

Association between Daily Living Walking Speed and Lifestyle and Physiological Factors in Older, Female Pokémon GO Players

Background: Walking speed is a reliable barometer of adverse health outcomes, particularly among older people. Few studies evaluated factors associated with daily actual walking speed, rather than that measured in a laboratory setting or self-reported data. Methods: In a joint effort with The Pokémon Company, we recruited study participants through a women’s magazine and analyzed data from 63 Pokémon GO players. We measured the true walking speed in daily life among older women using a data-gathering mobile application. Then, using questionnaire survey data collected on these participants in 2019, we estimated the relationship between walking speed and their lifestyle and physiological factors. In the analysis, we employed a bi-directional stepwise linear regression approach, with the Akaike information criterion (AIC) for variable selection. Results: The mean age of the 63 participants was 63.03 years (standard deviation, SD 7.46);the average walking speed was 4.56 km per hour (SD 1.54);and 52 (82.5%) and 55 (87.3%) participants answered that they had excellent/good health physically and mentally, respectively. After adjusted for covariates in a stepwise regression approach, we identified a significant association between −1.33 (95% confidence intervals −2.52 to −0.15) km/hour lower walking speed and the experience of outdoor falls within a year. We also demonstrated that the walking speed was 1.07 (0.33 to 1.81) km/hour faster for those who had played Pokémon GO before the study started. 目的目前湖北省的新型冠状病毒肺炎(COVID-19)确诊和疑似病例的数量仍在增加。国内外多个团队对疫情发展进行了模型预测,但结论并不统一。因此,开展本次疫情的预测模型研究、评估COVID-19的基本再生数(basic reproduction number,R0),对于评估病毒的传播能力以及一系列控制措施的效果具有重要意义。方法收集从湖北省2020年1月17日到2月8日期间每天报告的确诊病例数等数据,分别采用指数增长方法(exponential growth,EG)、极大似然法(maximum likelihood estimation,ML)、序贯贝叶斯方法(sequential Bayesian method,SB)和时间相关基本再生数(time dependent reproduction numbers,TD)估计R0值。结果由观测病例数和4种方法预测的病例数的拟合情况可知,EG方法拟合效果最优。EG方法估计COVID-19湖北省R0的值为3.49(95%CI:3.42~3.58)。采取封城控制手段期间,EG方法估算R0值为2.95(95%CI:2.86~3.03)。结论在传染病流行初期,适合采用EG方法估算R0。同时需要采取及时有效的控制措施,进一步降低COVID-19的传播速率。

On base manifolds of Lagrangian fibrations

We consider base spaces of Lagrangian fibrations from singular symplectic varieties. After defining cohomologically irreducible symplectic varieties, we construct an example of Lagrar, gian fibration whose base space is isomorphic to a quotient of the projective space. We also prove that the base space of Lagrangian fibration from a cohomologically symplectic variety is isomorphic to the projective space provided that the base space is smooth.

Relationship between space charge and effective pore size of nanoporous electrode in electric double-layer capacitor

The space-charge distributions of electric double-layer capacitors （EDLCs）, which are energy storage devices, were examined with the pulsed electroacoustic （PEA） method. It was found that the experimental results could be influenced by the reflection and penetration of sound waves when the space-charge dis- tributions of EDLCs were measured with the PEA method. This is because EDLCs have a five-layer structure consisting of three materials （aluminum, cellulose, and activated carbon）. We calculated the reflection wave components that influenced the charge density through the acoustic impedance and the relative permittivity of the materials. In this way, we found that the changes in the space-charge distributions of EDLCs and their charge characteristics corresponded closely. We determined that measuring the space- charge distributions with the PEA method was effective for evaluating the charge accumulation of EDLCs. In this study, a polarized electrode was prepared for use in EDLCs. The ratio of the surface area to the average pore diameter of the polarized electrode was measured with the nitrogen adsorption method at 77 K. The relationship between the ratio of the surface area to the average pore size and the space-charge distributions of EDLCs is also discussed in this paper.

Artificial Pheromone System Using RFID for Navigation of Autonomous Robots

Navigation system based on the animal behavior has received a growing attention in the past few years. The navigation systems using artificial pheromone are still few so far. For this reason, this paper presents our research that aim to implement autonomous navigation with artificial pheromone system. By introducing artificial pheromone system composed of data carriers and autonomous robots, the robotic system creates a potential field to navigate their group. We have developed a pheromone density model to realize the function of pheromones with the help of data carders. We intend to show the effectiveness of the proposed system by performing simulations and realization using modified mobile robot. The pheromone potential field system can be used for navigation of autonomous robots.

Quantitative Analysis of the Silk Moth＇s Chemical Plume Tracing Locomotion Using a Hierarchical Classification Method

The silk moth （Bombyx mori） exhibits efficient Chemical Plume Tracing （CPT）, which is ideal for biomimetics. However, there is insufficient quantitative understanding of its CPT behavior. We propose a hierarchical classification method to segment its natural CPT locomotion and to build its inverse model for detecting stimulus input. This provides the basis for quantitative analysis. The Gaussian mixture model with expectation-maximization algorithm is used first for unsupervised classification to decompose CPT locomotion data into Gaussian density components that represent a set of quantified elemental motions. A heuristic behavioral rule is used to categorize these components to eliminate components that are descriptive of the same motion. Then, the echo state network is used for supervised classification to evaluate segmented elemental motions and to compare CPT locomotion among different moths. In this case, categorized elemental motions are used as the training data to estimate stimulus time. We successfully built the inverse CPT behavioral model of the silk moth to detect stimulus input with good accuracy. The quantitative analysis indicates that silk moths exhibit behavioral singularity and time dependency in their CPT locomotion, which is dominated by its singularity.

Partitioned Method of Insect Flapping Flight for Maneuvering Analysis

This study proposed a partitioned method to analyze maneuvering of insects during flapping *** method decomposed the insect flapping flight into wing and body subsystems and then coupled them via boundary conditions imposed on the wing’s base using one-way *** the wing subsystem,the strong coupling of the flexible wings and surrounding fluid was accurately analyzed using the finite element method to obtain the thrust forces acting on the insect’s *** resulting thrust forces were passed from the wing subsystem to the body subsystem,and then rigid body motion was analyzed in the body *** rolling,yawing,and pitching motions were simulated using the proposed method as follows:In the rolling simulation,the difference of the stroke angle between the right and left wings caused a roll *** the yawing simulation,the initial feathering angle in the right wing only caused a yaw *** the pitching simulation,the difference between the front-and back-stroke angles in both the right and left wings caused a pitch *** three torques generated maneuvering motion comparable with that obtained in actual observations of insect *** results demonstrate that the proposed method can adequately simulate the fundamental maneuvers of insect flapping *** the present simulations,the maneuvering mechanisms were investigated at the governing equation level,which might be difficult using other ***,the proposed method will contribute to revealing the underlying insect flight mechanisms.
