Characterization of the genes involved in nitrogen cycling in wastewater treatment plants using DNA microarray and most probable number-PCR

To improve nitrogen removal performance of wastewater treatment plants （WWTPs）, it is essential to understand the behavior of nitrogen cycling communities, which comprise various microorganisms. This study characterized the quantity and diversity of nitrogen cycling genes in various processes of municipal WWTPs by employing two molecular-based methods：most probable number-polymerase chain reaction （MPN-PCR） and DNA microarray. MPN-PCR analysis revealed that gene quantities were not statistically different among processes, suggesting that conventional actwated sludge processes （CAS） are similar to nitrogen removal processes in their ability to retain an adequate population of nitrogen cycling microorganisms. Furthermore, most processes in the WWTPs that were researched shared a pattern：the nitS and the bacterial amoA genes were more abundant than the nirK and archaeal amoA genes, respectivelv. DNA microarray analysis revealed that several kinds of nitrification and denitrification genes were detected in both CAS and anaerobic-oxic processes （AO）, whereas limited genes were detected in nitrogen removal processes. Results of this study suggest that CAS maintains a diverse community of nitrogen cycling microorganisms; moreover, the microbial communities in nitrogen removal processes may be specific.

An information geometrical method is developed for characterizing or classifying neurons in cortical areas whose spike rates fluctuate in *** interspike intervals(ISIs)of a spike sequence of a neuron is modeled as a gamma process with a time-variant spike rate,a fixed shape parameter and a fixed absolute refractory *** formulate the problem of estimating the fixed parameters as semiparametric estimation and apply an information geometrical method to derive the optimal estimators from a statistical viewpoint.

Small hepatocellular carcinoma with ring calcification:A case report and literature review

Ring calcification in untreated hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is extremely rare,with only 3 previously reported cases in the English-language literature.A case of HCC with ring calcification was reported in this ***,3 previously reported cases of HCC with ring calcification were *** 3 of these 4 cases(including our case),surgery was *** the size of the ring-calcified lesion ranged from 3.0-3.7 cm in previously reported cases,the size was only 1 cm in *** differentiation of the tumor was moderate in the 2 previously reported cases in the histological findings and poor in *** spite of their poor differentiation for their sizes,these tumors showed no early enhancement in dynamic computed *** calcified tumors showed a thick fibrous capsule and extensive necrosis *** calcification was considered to result from a circulatory disturbance caused by the imbalance between the less abundant arterial blood flow and high inner pressure induced by either the thick fibrous capsule or vigorous proliferation due to the poor *** calcification in untreated HCC may suggest a lower differentiation of the *** if its size is small,hepatic resection should be performed for any tumor with ring calcification because poor differentiation is considered to be one of the risk factors for recurrence after local ablation therapy,including radio frequency ablation.

Filter-feeding shellfish are common benthos and significantly affect the biogeochemical cycle in the shallow coastal *** clam Scapharca subcrenata is one of the widely cultured bivalve species in many coastal areas owing to its tremendous economic ***,there is little information regarding the effects of the bioturbation of *** on the fluxes of nutrient exchange in the sediment-water interface(SWI).In this regard,*** was sampled during October 2016 to determine the effects of its bioturbation activity on the nutrient exchange flux of the *** results showed that the biological activity of *** could increase the diffusion depth and the rate of the nutrients exchange in the *** bioturbation of *** could allow the nutrients to permeate into the surface sediments at 6-10cm and increase the release rate of nutrients at the *** releasing fluxes of DIN and PO43−-P in the culture area were found to be around three times higher than that in the non-cultured *** culture of *** has been proved to be an important contributor to nutrient exchange across the SWI in the farming area of Haizhou *** exchange in the SWI contributes a part of 86%DIN,71%PO43−-P and 18%SiO32−-Si for the aquaculture farm.

Study on conservation of mural paintings in Tumulus： Numerical analysis of heat behaviors of stone chamber after excavation

In 1972 mural paintings of Takamatsuzuka tumulus were discovered and have been conserved on site for 35 years, but fungi growth on the mural paintings was not suppressed. In 2007 the stone chamber was dismantled and removed to the facility for conservation and restoration. The purposes of our study are to clarify the main cause of the deterioration and to propose a suitable method to prevent the deterioration for preserving them on site. In this paper, we developed the two-dimensional analysis model by considering the actual change of the surrounding mound because of the excavation in 1972, and perform the analysis of heat behavior of Takamatsuzuka tumulus before and after excavation and compare effects of different sun-shading methods on heat behavior of the stone chamber. The main results are as follows：（1） after the excavation, the inside surface temperature distribution of the stone chamber and the amplitude of indoor temperature become larger. （2） Using the sun-shading panel in the area of excavation is an effective method to reduce the average indoor temperature; however, it has no influence on reducing the temperature distribution of the stone chamber and the temperature difference between the inside wall and indoor.

Photothermal therapy of tumors in lymph nodes using gold nanorods and near-infrared laser light with controlled surface cooling

Photothermal therapy （PTT） using near-infrared （NIR） laser light and gold nanorods （GNRs） shows promise as a novel cancer treatment modality. However, the laser intensity required to destroy tumor cells located beneath the skin is greater than the threshold intensity that causes skin damage; thus, irradiation with laser light damages the skin as well as the tumor. Here, we show that a temperature control system allows metastatic lymph nodes （LNs） to be treated by PTT using NIR laser light and GNRs, without skin damage. A mouse model of LN metastasis was developed by injection of tumor cells, and the tumor-bearing proper axillary LN was treated with NIR laser light after injection of GNRs. The skin temperature was maintained at 45 ~C during irradiation by using a temperature control system. Bioluminescence imaging revealed that tumor progression was less in LNs exposed to NIR laser light and GNRs than in LNs exposed to NIR laser light alone or controls （no irradiation or GNRs）. Furthermore, the skin and LN capsule were macroscopically intact on day 9 after irradiation with NIR laser light, whereas tumor cells within the LN showed apoptosis. A numerical analysis demonstrated that the high-temperature zone and the LN region showing damage were localized to an area up to 3 mm in depth. The proposed novel PTT technique, using NIR laser light and GNRs with controlled surface cooling, could be applied clinically to treat metastatic LNs located within or outside the area accessible for surgical dissection.

Activated carbon enhanced ozonation of oxalate attributed to HO·oxidation in bulk solution and surface oxidation: Effect of activated carbon dosage and pH

Ozonation of oxalate in aqueous phase was performed with a commercial activated carbon（AC）in this work. The effect of AC dosage and solution pH on the contribution of hydroxyl radicals（HOU） in bulk solution and oxidation on the AC surface to the removal of oxalate was studied. We found that the removal of oxalate was reduced by tert-butyl alcohol（tBA） with low dosages of AC,while it was hardly affected by tBA when the AC dosage was greater than 0.3 g/L. tBA also inhibited ozone decomposition when the AC dosage was no more than 0.05 g/L, but it did not work when the AC dosage was no less than 0.1 g/L. These observations indicate that HOUin bulk solution and oxidation on the AC surface both contribute to the removal of oxalate. HOU oxidation in bulk solution is significant when the dosage of AC is low, whereas surface oxidation is dominant when the dosage of AC is high. The oxalate removal decreased with increasing pH of the solution with an AC dosage of 0.5 g/L. The degradation of oxalate occurs mainly through surface oxidation in acid and neutral solution, but through HOUoxidation in basic bulk solution. A mechanism involving both HOUoxidation in bulk solution and surface oxidation was proposed for AC enhanced ozonation of oxalate.

Screening of agonistic activities against four nuclear receptors in wastewater treatment plants in Japan using a yeast two-hybrid assay

To assess the potential endocrine disruptive effects through multiple nuclear receptors （NRs）, especially non-steroidal NRs, in municipal wastewater, we examined the agonistic activities on four NRs （estrogen receptor α, thyroid hormone receptor α, retinoic acid receptor ct and retinoid X receptor α） of untreated and treated wastewater from municipal wastewater treatment plants （WWTPs） in Japan using a yeast two-hybrid assay. Investigation of the influent and effluent of seven WWTPs revealed that agonistic activities against steroidal and non-steroidal NRs were always detected in the influents and partially remained in the effluents. Further investigation of four WWTPs employing conventional activated sludge, pseudo-anoxic-oxic, anoxic-oxic and anaerobic-anoxic-oxic processes revealed that the ability to reduce the agonistic activity against each of the four NRs varies depending on the treatment process. These results indicated that municipal wastewater in Japan commonly contains endocrine disrupting chemicals that exert agonistic activities on steroidal and non-steroidal NRs, and that some of these chemicals are released into the natural aquatic environment. Although the results obtained in yeast assays suggested that measured levels of non-steroidal NR agonists in the effluent of WWTPs were not likely to cause any biological effect, further study is required to assess their possible risks in detail.

BACKGROUND Relapsing polychondritis(RP)is a rare inflammatory disease involving the systemic cartilage,such as the auricle,trachea,and bronchiole,among others.A patient with RP shows variable symptoms based on the involved *** SUMMARY A 72-year-old Japanese woman with a history of redness of the bilateral auricles for 3 d was referred to a *** clinician prescribed antibiotics to the patient;however,the symptoms worsened;thus,she was referred to our *** and neck magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed edematous auricle with remarkable contrast,fluid collection in the bilateral mastoid cells,suggesting otitis *** eustachian tube(ET)on the right side was also edematous with contrast *** patient was suspected of RP according to the diagnostic criteria.A biopsy of the auricular cartilage was performed by an otorhinolaryngologist,confirming pathological proof of *** with steroids were immediately administered *** We highlight a rare case of RP with radiologically confirmed involvement of ET in the MRI.
