Optimum laser configurations are presented to achieve high illumination uniformity with directly driven inertial confinement fusion targets.Assuming axisymmetric absorption pattern of individual laser beams,theoretical models are reviewed in terms of the number of laser beams,system imperfection,and laser beam patterns.Utilizing a self-organizing system of charged particles on a sphere,a simple numerical model is provided to give an optimal configuration for an arbitrary number of laser beams.As a result,such new configurations as“M48”and“M60”are found to show substantially higher illumination uniformity than any other existing direct drive systems.A new polar direct-drive scheme is proposed with the laser axes keeping off the target center,which can be applied to laser configurations designed for indirectly driven inertial fusion.

In the central nervous system,the A6 noradrenaline(NA)and the B3 serotonin(5-HT)cell groups are well-recognized players in the descending antinociceptive system,while other NA/5-HT cell groups are not well characterized.A5/A7 NA and B25-HT cells project to the spinal horn and form descending pathways.We recorded G-Ca MP6 green fluorescence signal intensities in the A5/A7 NA and the B25-HT cell groups of awake mice in response to acute tail pinch stimuli,acute heat stimuli,and in the context of a non-noxious control test,using fiber photometry with a calcium imaging system.We first introduced G-Ca MP6 in the A5/A7 NA or B25-HT neuronal soma,using transgenic mice carrying the tetracycline-controlled transactivator transgene under the control of either a dopamineβ-hydroxylase or a tryptophan hydroxylase-2 promoters and by the site-specific injection of adeno-associated virus(AAV-Tet O(3 G)-G-Ca MP6).After confirming the specific expression patterns of G-Ca MP6,we recorded G-Ca MP6 green fluorescence signals in these sites in awake mice in response to acute nociceptive stimuli.G-Ca MP6 fluorescence intensity in the A5,A7,and B2 cell groups was rapidly increased in response to acute nociceptive stimuli and soon after,it returned to baseline fluorescence intensity.This was not observed in the non-noxious control test.The results indicate that acute nociceptive stimuli rapidly increase the activities of A5/A7 NA or B25-HT neurons but the non-noxious stimuli do not.The present study suggests that A5/A7 NA or B25-HT neurons play important roles in nociceptive processing in the central nervous system.We suggest that A5/A7/B2 neurons may be new therapeutic targets.All performed procedures were approved by the Institutional Animal Use Committee of Kagoshima University(MD17105)on February 22,2018.

BACKGROUND Bone metastasis has various negative impacts.Activities of daily living(ADL)and quality of life(QOL)can be significantly decreased,survival may be impacted,and medical expenses may increase.It is estimated that at least 5%cancer patients might be suffering from bone metastases.In 2016,we published the Comprehensive Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Bone Metastasis.Since then,the therapeutic outcomes for patients have gradually improved.As life expectancy is a major determinant of surgical intervention,the strategy should be modified if the prolongation of survival is to be achieved.AIM To monitor how bone metastasis treatment has changed before and after launch of our guidelines for bone metastasis.METHODS For advanced cancer patients with bone metastasis who visited the Department of Clinical Oncology at Akita University hospital between 2012 and 2023,parameters including the site and number of bone metastases,laboratory data,and survival time,were extracted from electronic medical records and the Katagiri score was calculated.The association with survival was determined for each factor.RESULTS Data from 136 patients were obtained.The 1-year survival rate for the poor prognosis group with a higher Katagiri score was 20.0%in this study,which was 6%and an apparent improvement from 2014 when the scoring system was developed.Other factors significantly affecting survival included five or more bone metastases than less(P=0.0080),and treatment with chemotherapy(P<0.001),bone modifying agents(P=0.0175)and immune checkpoint inhibitors(P=0.0128).In recent years,advances in various treatment methods have extended the survival period for patients with advanced cancer.It is necessary not only to simply extend survival time,but also to maintain ADL and improve QOL.CONCLUSION Various therapeutic interventions including surgical approach for bone metastasis,which is a disorder of locomotor organs,are increasingly required.Guidelines and scoring system for prognosis need to be revised promptly.

Motor imagery is defined as an act wherein an individual contemplates a mental action of motor execution without apparent action.Mental practice executed by repetitive motor imagery can improve motor performance without simultaneous sensory input or overt output.We aimed to investigate cerebral hemodynamics during motor imagery and motor execution of a self-feeding activity using chopsticks.This study included 21 healthy right-handed volunteers.The self-feeding activity task comprised either motor imagery or motor execution of eating sliced cucumber pickles with chopsticks to examine eight regions of interest:pre-supplementary motor area,supplementary motor area,bilateral prefrontal cortex,premotor area,and sensorimotor cortex.The mean oxyhemoglobin levels were detected using near-infrared spectroscopy to reflect cerebral activation.The mean oxyhemoglobin levels during motor execution were significantly higher in the left sensorimotor cortex than in the supplementary motor area and the left premotor area.Moreover,significantly higher oxyhemoglobin levels were detected in the supplementary motor area and the left premotor area during motor imagery,compared to motor execution.Supplementary motor area and premotor area had important roles in the motor imagery of self-feeding activity.Moreover,the activation levels of the supplementary motor area and the premotor area during motor execution and motor imagery are likely affected by intentional cognitive processes.Levels of cerebral activation differed in some areas during motor execution and motor imagery of a self-feeding activity.This study was approved by the Ethical Review Committee of Nagasaki University(approval No.18110801)on December 10,2018.

A 3-year-old boy developed transient protein-losing gastroenteropathy associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Both IgG and IgM antibodies to CMV were positive in a serologic blood test. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed multiple erosions throughout the body of the stomach, without enlarged gastric folds. Histological examination of the biopsy specimens indicated eosinophilic gastroenteritis and CMV infection. The patient had complete resolution without specific therapy for CMV in four weeks. An allergic reaction as well as CMV infection played important roles in the pathogenesis of this case.

Carbon nanotubes(CNTs)are an emerging nanomaterial because of their outstanding performance in various applications.In recent years,the segment molecules of CNTs,referred to as carbon nanorings(CNRs)or carbon nanobelts(CNBs),have gained attention for their unique structures and properties,as well as their potential as seed molecules for the precise synthesis of CNTs.CNBs are rigid and thick segments of CNTs whose synthesis has been addressed by scientists fascinated by the uniqueness of CNBs long before the discovery of CNTs.After 60 years of efforts by synthetic chemists all over the world,the synthesis of the first CNB,(6,6)CNB,was achieved by our group in 2017.Since this milestone,diverse types of nanobelts have been synthesized through various synthetic routes,thereby demonstrating their photophysical,magnetic,and redox properties derived from rigid belt structures.The applications of CNBs have also been introduced recently.The formation of the host−guest complex,transformation to three-dimensional molecules,and measurement of conductivity have been reported for CNBs.This paper summarizes the brief history and perspective of CNBs.Further synthetic campaigns and aggressive application of CNBs would create novel and groundbreaking scenes in materials science.
