Quantifying the short-term dynamics of soil organic carbon decomposition using a power function model

Introduction:Soil heterotrophic respiration(Rh,an indicator of soil organic carbon decomposition)is an important carbon efflux of terrestrial ***,the dynamics of soil Rh and its empirical relations with climatic factors have not been well ***:We incubated soils of three subtropical forests at five temperatures(10,17,24,31,and 38°C)and five moistures(20,40,60,80,and 100%water holding capacity(WHC))over 90 *** was measured throughout the course of the *** types of models(log-linear,exponential,and power model)were fitted to the measurements and evaluated based on the coefficient of determination(r2)and Akaike Information Criterion(AIC)of the *** regression analysis was used to derive the empirical relations between model parameters and the two climatic ***:Among the three models,the power function model(Rh=R1 t−k)performed the best in fitting the descending trend of soil Rh with incubation time(r2>0.69 for 26 of 30 models).Both R1 and k generally increased linearly with soil temperature but varied quadratically with soil moisture in the three forest ***:This study demonstrated that the power function model was much more accurate than the exponential decay model in describing the decomposition dynamics of soil organic carbon(SOC)in mineral soils of subtropical *** empirical relations and parameter values derived from this incubation study may be incorporated into process-based ecosystem models to simulate Rh responses to climate changes.

Background Precipitation plays an important role in crop production and soil greenhouse gas ***,how crop yield and soil nitrous oxide(N_(2)O)emission respond to precipitation change,particularly with different background precipitations(dry,normal,and wet years),has not been well *** this study,we examined the impacts of precipitation changes on corn yield and soil N_(2)O emission using a long-term(1981-2020,40 years)climate dataset as well as seven manipulated precipitation treatments with different background precipitations using the DeNitrification-DeComposition(DNDC)*** Results showed large variations of corn yield and precipitation but small variation of soil N_(2)O emission among 40 *** corn yield and soil N_(2)O emission showed near linear relationships with precipitation based on the long-term precipitation data,but with different response patters of corn yield and soil N_(2)O emission to precipitation *** yield showed a positive linear response to precipitation manipulations in the dry year,but no response to increases in precipitation in the normal year,and a trend of decrease in the wet *** extreme drought treatments reduced corn yield sharply in both normal and wet *** contrast,soil N_(2)O emission mostly responded linearly to precipitation *** in precipitation in the dry year reduced more soil N_(2)O emission than those in the normal and wet years,while increases in precipitation increased more soil N_(2)O emission in the normal and wet years than in the dry *** This study revealed different response patterns of corn yield and soil N_(2)O emission to precipitation and highlights that mitigation strategy for soil N_(2)O emission reduction should consider different background climate conditions.

Rates of litter decomposition in terrestrial ecosystems:global patterns and controlling factors

Aims We aim to construct a comprehensive global database of litter decomposition rate(k value)estimated by surface floor litterbags,and investigate the direct and indirect effects of impact factors such as geographic factors(latitude and altitude),climatic factors(mean annual tempePlrature,MAT;mean annual precipitation,MAP)and litter quality factors(the contents of N,P,K,Ca,Mg and C:N ratio,lignin:N ratio)on litter *** We compiled a large data set of litter decomposition rates(k values)from 110 research sites and conducted simple,multiple regression and path analyses to explore the relationship between the k values and impact factors at the global *** findings The k values tended to decrease with latitude(LAT)and lignin content(LIGN)of litter but increased with temperature,precipitation and nutrient concentrations at the large spatial *** factor such as climate,litter quality and geographic variable could not explain litter decomposition rates ***,the combination of total nutrient(TN)elements and C:N accounted for 70.2%of the variation in the litter decomposition *** combination of LAT,MAT,C:N and TN accounted for 87.54%of the variation in the litter decomposition *** results indicate that litter quality is the most important direct regulator of litter decomposition at the global *** data synthesis revealed significant relationships between litter decomposition rates and the combination of climatic factor(MAT)and litter quality(C:N,TN).The global-scale empirical relationships developed here are useful for a better understanding and modeling of the effects of litter quality and climatic factors on litter decomposition rates.

Plant carbon substrate supply regulated soil nitrogen dynamics in a tallgrass prairie in the Great Plains, USA: results of a clipping and shading experiment

Land use management affects plant carbon(C)supply and soil environments and hence alters soil nitrogen(N)dynamics,with consequent feedbacks to terrestrial ecosystem *** objective of this study was to better identify mechanisms by which land-use management(clipping and shading)regulates soil N in a tallgrass prairie,OK,*** We conducted 1-year clipping and shading experiment to investigate the effects of changes in land-use management(soil microclimates,plant C substrate supply and microbial activity)on soil inorganic N(NH_(4)^(+)-N and NO_(3)^(-)-N),net N mineralization and nitrification in a tallgrass *** Findings Land-use management through clipping and/or shading significantly increased annual mean inorganic N,possibly due to lowered plant N uptake and decreased microbial N immobilization into biomass *** significantly increased annual mean mineralization rates(P<0.05).Clipping slightly decreased annual mean N nitrification rates whereas shading significantly increased annual mean N nitrification *** microclimate significantly explained 36%of the variation in NO_(3)^(-)-N concentrations(P=0.004).However,soil respiration,a predictor of plant C substrate supply and microbial activity,was negatively correlated with NH_(4)^(+)-N concentrations(P=0.0009),net N mineralization(P=0.0037)and nitrification rates(P=0.0028)across *** results suggest that change in C substrate supply andmicrobial activity under clipping and/or shading is a critical control on NH_(4)^(+)-N,net N mineralization and nitrification rates,whereas clipping and shading-induced soil microclimate change can be important for NO_(3)^(-)-N variation in the tallgrass prairie.

Effects of Biochar Application on Soil Properties, Plant Biomass Production, and Soil Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Mini-Review

Biochar has been applied extensively as a soil amendment over the past decades. This review summarizes the general findings of the impacts of biochar application on different aspects from soil physical, chemical, and microbial properties, to soil nutrient availabilities, plant growth, biomass production and yield, greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, and soil carbon sequestration. Due to different biochar pyrolysis conditions, feedstock types, biochar application rates and methods, and potential interactions with other factors such as plant species and soil nutrient conditions, results from those studies are not inclusive. However, most studies reported positive effects of biochar application on soil physical and chemical properties, soil microbial activities, plant biomass and yield, and potential reductions of soil GHG emissions. A framework of biochar impacts is summarized, and possible mechanisms are discussed. Further research of biochar application in agriculture is called to verify the proposed mechanisms involved in biochar-soil-microbial-plant interactions for soil carbon sequestration and crop biomass and yield improvements.

Soil temperature and moisture sensitivities of soil CO_2 efflux before and after tillage in a wheat field of Loess Plateau,China

As a conventional farming practice, tillage has lasted for thousands of years in Loess Plateau, China. Although recent studies show that tillage is a prominent culprit to soil carbon loss in croplands, few studies have investigated the influences of tillage on the responses of soil CO2 efflux （SCE） to soil temperature and moisture. Using a multi-channel automated CO2 efflux chamber system, we measured SCE in situ continuously before and after the conventional tillage in a rain fed wheat field of Loess Plateau, China. The changes in soil temperature and moisture sensitivities of SCE, denoted by the Q10 value and linear regression slope respectively, were compared in the same range of soil temperature and moisture before and after the tillage. The results showed that, after the tillage, SCE increased by 1.2-2.2 times; the soil temperature sensitivity increased by 36.1%-37.5%; and the soil moisture sensitivity increased by 140%-166%. Thus, the tillage-induced increase in SCE might partially be attributed to the increases in temperature and moisture sensitivity of SCE.

Impacts of Micro- and Nano-Plastics on Soil Properties and Plant Production in Agroecosystems: A Mini-Review

Micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) are tiny plastic particles resulting from plastic product degradation. Soil MNPs have been identified as potential influential factors affecting various soil properties and crop biomass productivity. This mini-review provides a synthesis of recent findings concerning their effects on soil physicochemical properties, microorganisms, organic carbon content, soil nutrients, greenhouse gas emissions, soil fauna, and their impacts on plant ecophysiology, growth, and production. The results indicate that MNPs may markedly impede soil aggregation ability, increase porosity, decrease soil bulk density, enhance water retention capacity, influence soil pH and electrical conductivity, and escalate soil water evaporation. Exposure to MNPs may predominantly induce changes in soil microbial composition, reducing the diversity and complexity of microbial communities and microbial activity while enhancing soil organic carbon stability, influencing soil nutrient dynamics, and stimulating organic carbon decomposition and denitrification processes, leading to elevated soil respiration and methane emissions, and potentially decreasing soil nitrous oxide emission. Additionally, MNPs may adversely affect soil fauna, diminish seed germination rates, promote plant root growth, yet impair plant photosynthetic efficacy and biomass productivity. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the impacts and mechanistic foundations of MNPs. Future research avenues are suggested to further explore the impacts and economic implications.

Characterizing Rhizodegradation of the Insecticide Bifenthrin in Two Soil Types

Rhizodegradation is a process by which plant-supplied substrates stimulate microbial populations in plant root zones (rhizospheres) to cause removal of undesirable levels of contaminants in soil. This study characterized rhizodegradation of the insecticide bifenthrin in Armour silt loam and Sullivan fine sandy loam soils that were planted with switchgrass, big bluestem, and alfalfa. After six weeks in soils, plate dilution frequency assays (PDFA) of bacterial populations were higher in all planted soils than in unplanted ones. Planted Sullivan soils contained higher bacteria than corresponding Armour soils and alfalfa rhizospheres of both soil types contained highest bacteria. Bacterial populations generally increased between week 6 and week 10, before declining in each treatment at week 12. Carbon utilization patterns (CUP) of bacterial communities, measured as color development on BIOLOG plates, were higher in planted soils than in unplanted ones. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) constructed patterns based on different extents of color development;these patterns were used to relate microbial communities in the different treatments. Gas chromatography (GC-ECD) showed that significantly more bifenthrin dissipated in planted soils than unplanted ones. Different levels of bifenthrin were recovered in planted soils but the differences were generally not significant. Data are being evaluated further to provide a basis for the development of strategies for enhancing rhizodegradation of soils contaminated with bifenthrin.

The Contraction-Expansion Algorithm and Its Use in Fitting Nonlinear Equation

A new optimization method,contraction-expansion algorithm,is devel-oped and applied to fit nonlinear *** points with equal distance are allocated in the given initial intervals,then the algorithm searches for the points of better objective function one round after another,with contracting and expanding intervals *** step length(l),a critical factor to optimal solution,is determined and adjusted by feedback information of the searching *** experiments with number of simulat-ed and real data sets show that the new algorithm is much easier to the optimization than other *** algorithm does not need to provide derivatives of the *** algorithm can also be used in other ptimization problems.
