Time-course pattern of neuronal loss and gliosis in gerbil hippocampi following mild, severe, or lethal transient global cerebral ischemia

Transient ischemia in the whole brain leads to neuronal loss/death in vulnerable brain regions. The striatum, neocortex and hippocampus selectively loose specific neurons after transient ischemia. Just 5 minutes of transient ischemia can cause pyramidal neuronal death in the hippocampal cornu ammonis (CA) 1 field at 4 days after transient ischemia. In this study, we investigated the effects of 5-minute (mild), 15-minute (severe), and 20-minute (lethal) transient ischemia by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) on behavioral change and neuronal death and gliosis (astrocytosis and microgliosis) in gerbil hippocampal subregions (CA1-3 region and dentate gyrus). We performed spontaneous motor activity test to evaluate gerbil locomotor activity, cresyl violet staining to detect cellular distribution, neuronal nuclei immunohistochemistry to detect neuronal distribution, and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence to evaluate neuronal death. We also conducted immunohistochemical staining for glial fibrillary acidic protein and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Ibal) to evaluate astrocytosis and microgliosis, respectively. Animals subjected to 20-minute BCCAO died in at least 2 days. BCCAO for 15 minutes led to pyramidal cell death in hippocampal CA1-3 region 2 days later and granule cell death in hippocampal de匚tate gyrus 5 days later. Similar results were not found in animals subjected to 5-minute BCCAO. Gliosis was much more rapidly and severely progressed in animals subjected to 15-minute BCCAO than in those subjected to 5- minute BCCAO. Our results indicate that neuronal loss in the hippocampal formation following transient ischemia is significantly different according to regions and severity of transient ischemia. The experimental protocol was approved by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (AICUC) of Kangwon National University (approval No. KW-180124-1) on May 22, 2018.

Electrochemical water splitting to produce hydrogen fuel is a promising renewable energy-conversion ***-scale electrolysis of freshwater may deplete water resources and cause water scarcity ***,seawater electrolysis is a potential solution to the future energy and water *** seawater electrolysis,it is critical to develop cost-effective electrocatalysts to split seawater without chloride ***,we present zinc-doped nickel iron(oxy)hydroxide nanocubes passivated by negatively charged polyanions(NFZ-PBA-S)that exhibits outstanding catalytic activity,stability,and selectivity for seawater *** dopants and polyanion-rich passivated surface layers in NFZ-PBA-S could effectively repel chlorine ions and enhance corrosion resistance,enabling its excellent catalytic activity and stability for seawater oxidation.

Structured illumination microscopy(SIM)has become the standard for next-generation wide-field microscopy,offering ultrahigh imaging speed,superresolution,a large fiield-of-view,and long-term *** the past decade,SIM hardware and software have flourished,leading to successful applications in various biological ***,unlocking the full potential of SIM system hardware requires the development of advanced reconstruction ***,we introduce the basic theory of two SIM algorithms,namely,optical sectioning SIM(OS-SIM)and superresolution SIM(SR-SIM),and summarize their implementation *** then provide a brief overview of existing OS-SIM processing algorithms and review the development of SR-SIM reconstruction algorithms,focusing primarily on 2D-SIM,3D-SIM,and *** showcase the state-of-the-art development of SIM systems and assist users in selecting a commercial SIM system for a specific application,we compare the features of representative off-the-shelf SIM ***,we provide perspectives on the potential future developments of SIM.

Evaluation of microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-xCe-0.5Zn alloys by nano-indentation

The microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-xCe-0.5Zn （x=0.5, 1.5, 2.5, molar fraction, %） alloys were examined using a nano-indentation technique. The alloys were fabricated using a vacuum induction melting method under an argon atmosphere The microstruetures of Mg-xCe-0.5Zn alloys mainly consist ofa-Mg and eutectic Mg12Ce phase. The volume fraction and size of the eutectic Mgl2Ce phase increase with increasing Ce contents. Nano-indentation test results show that the indentation hardness and elastic modulus of the eutectic Mg12Ce phase are higher than those of the a-Mg matrix. In addition, the mean indentation hardness and elastic modulus of the Mg-xCe-0.5Zn alloys increase with the Ce addition amount increasing.

ACUPUNCTURE STIMULATION IMPROVES MEMORY IMPAIRMENT INDUCED BY SCOPOLAMINE IN RATS

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether acupuncture stimulation at the Baihui(GV20) improves memory defects caused by administration of scopolamine(SCO) to the *** effects of acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 on the cholinergic system as well as the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) and cAMP-response element-binding protein(CREB) in the hippocampus were also ***: Male rats were administered with SCO(2 mg/kg, i.p.) once daily for 14 *** stimulation at GV20 was performed for 5 min before SCO ***: Acupuncture stimulation at GV20 improved memory impairment as measured by the passive avoidance test(PAT) and reduced the escape latency for finding the platform in the Morris water maze(MWM) *** stimulation at the GV20 significantly alleviated memory-associated decreases in the expression levels of choline acetyltransferase(ChAT), BDNF and CREB proteins in the ***, acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 significantly restored the expression of choline transporter 1(CHT1), vesicular acetylcholine transporter(VAChT), BDNF and CREB mRNAs in the ***: These results demonstrated that acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 has significant neuroprotective effects against neuronal impairment and memory dysfunction caused by SCO in ***, these findings suggested that acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 might be a useful therapy in various neurodegenerative diseases for the improvement of cognitive functioning via stimulating cholinergic enzyme activities and regulating BDNF and CREB expression in the brain.

Mg alloys exhibit a number of good properties such as low density, good castability and high specific strength. However, molten Mg and Mg alloys are ignited without the melt protective gases during melting and casting process due to their high reactivity. The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of Ca and CaO on pure Mg through microstructure observation, ignition test and phase analysis. With increasing Ca and CaO contents, the ignition resistance of Ca or CaO added pure Mg is increased and the grains are refined. As results of XRD and EDS, CaO is reduced to Ca in CaO added pure Mg. Mg2Ca phase is formed even in 0.1 wt.%CaO added pure Mg by reduction mechanism, while Mg2Ca phase is formed over 1.35 wt.% Ca added pure Mg.

Multilevel resistive switching and synaptic plasticity of nanoparticulated cobaltite oxide memristive device

Multilevel resistive switching(RS)is a key property to embrace the full potential of memristive devices for non-volatile memory and neuromorphic computing *** this study,we employed nanoparticulated cobaltite oxide(Co_(3)O_(4))as a model material to demonstrate the multilevel RS and synaptic learning capabilities because of its multiple and stable redox state *** Pt/Co_(3)O_(4)/Pt memristive device exhibited tunable RS properties with respect to different voltages and compliance currents(CC)without the electroforming *** is,the device showed voltage-dependent RS at a higher CC whereas CC-dependent RS was observed at lower *** device showed four different resistance states during endurance and retention measurements and non-volatile memory results indicated that the CC-based measurement had less ***,we investigated the basic and complex synaptic plasticity properties using the analog current-voltage characteristics of the Pt/Co_(3)O_(4)/Pt *** particular,we mimicked the potentiation–depression and four-spike time-dependent plasticity(STDP)rules such as asymmetric Hebbian,asymmetric anti-Hebbian,symmetric Hebbian,and symmetric antiHebbian learning *** results of the present work indicate that the cobaltite oxide is an excellent nanomaterial for both multilevel RS and neuromorphic computing applications.

Enhancing Hydrophilicity of Thick Electrodes for High Energy Density Aqueous Batteries

Thick electrodes can substantially enhance the overall energy density of ***,insufficient wettability of aqueous electrolytes toward electrodes with conventional hydrophobic binders severely limits utilization of active materials with increasing the thickness of electrodes for aqueous batteries,resulting in battery performance deterioration with a reduced ***,we demonstrate that controlling the hydrophilicity of the thicker electrodes is critical to enhancing the overall energy density of *** binders are synthesized via a simple sulfonation process of conventional polyvinylidene fluoride binders,considering physicochemical properties such as mechanical properties and *** introduction of abundant sulfonate groups of binders(i)allows fast and sufficient electrolyte wetting,and(ii)improves ionic conduction in thick electrodes,enabling a significant increase in reversible capacities under various current ***,the sulfonated binder effectively inhibits the dissolution of cathode materials in reactive aqueous ***,our findings significantly enhance the energy density and contribute to the development of practical zinc-ion batteries.
