Clinical results of radical prostatectomy for patients with prostate cancer in Macao

Background Incidence of prostate cancer has been increasing in recent decades. In the year 2005, prostate cancer became the second most common cancer in males in Macao. The purpose of this report was to review and summarize the clinical features and prognosis of the 54 patients undergoing radical prostatectomy in Macao Special Administrative Region （SAR）, China.Methods From November 2000 to November 2006, retropubic radical prostatectomy were performed in 54 cases for the treatment of prostate cancer. The mean age of patients was 69.8 years （range from 54 to 79）. The preoperative prostate specific antigen （PSA） level, postoperative pathologic stage and Gleason＇s score, operation duration, intraoperative bleeding and intraoperative and postoperative complications were reported. The follow-up duration was 3 months to 6.25 years with a mean of 2.1 years. Postoperative parameters including PSA alteration, biochemical recurrence, local recurrence, distant metastasis and mortality were observed.Results Most of the patients in our study were diagnosed as localized prostate cancer. The patients＇ preoperative serum PSA was 0-4.0 ng/ml （16.7%）, 4.0-10.0 ng/ml （51.8%）, 10.1-20.0 ng/ml （24.1%） and above 20.0 ng/ml （7.4%）. The TNM stage T1a ＋ T1b comprised 7.6% of patients, stage T2a ＋ T2b comprised 20.3%, stage T2c 38.9%, stage T3a 20.3% and over T3a only 12.9%. There were 9.5% cases with Gleason scores of 2-4, 41.5% with scores of 5-6, 30.2% with scores of 7 and 18.8% with scores of 8-10. The average operative duration was 216 minutes and the average intraoperative bleeding was 760 ml. Intraoperative complications included one massive hemorrhage （1.9%）, one rectal injury （1.9%） and one obturator nerve injury （1.9%）. Early postoperative complications consisted of urinary incontinence （14 cases, 25.9%）, bladder neck stricture （5 cases, 9.3%）, acute urinary retention （4 cases, 7.4%）, pelvic effusion （2 cases, 3.8%）, lymphocele （1 case, 1.9%） and vesicorectal fistula （only 1 c

Thresholdless coherence in a superradiant laser

Lasing threshold in the conventional lasers is the minimum input power required to initiate laser *** has been widely accepted that the conventional laser threshold occurring around a unity intracavity photon number can be eliminated in the input-output curve by making the so-calledβparameter approach *** recent experiments,however,have revealed that even in this case the photon statistics still undergo a transition from coherent to thermal statistics when the intracavity mean photon number is decreased below *** the coherent output is only available above the diminished threshold,the long-sought promise of thresholdless lasers to produce always coherent light has become ***,we present an always-coherent thresholdless laser based on superradiance by two-level atoms in a quantum superposition state with the same phase traversing a high-Q *** lasing was observed without the conventional lasing threshold around the unity photon number and the photon statistics remained near coherent even below *** coherence was improved by reducing the coupling constant as well as the excited-state amplitude in the superposition *** results pave a way toward always-coherent thresholdless lasers with more practical media such as quantum dots,nitrogen-vacancy centers and doped ions in crystals.

Effects of two different doses of intravitreal bevacizumab on subfoveal choroidal thickness and retinal vessel diameter in branch retinal vein occlusion

AIM： To investigate the effects of two different doses of intravitreal bevacizumab on subfoveal choroidal thickness （SFChT） and retinal vessel diameter in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion. METhoDS： An interventional, restrospective study of 41 eyes of 41 patients who had completed 12mo of follow-up, divided into group 1 （1.25 mg of bevacizumab, 21 eyes of 21 patients） and group 2 （2.5 mg of bevacizumab, 20 eyes of 21 patients）. Complete ophthalmic examination, fluorescein angiography, enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography and measurement of retinal vessel diameter with IVAN software were performed at baseline and follow-up. RESULTS： The SFChT changed from 279.1 （165-431） μm at baseline to 277.0 （149-413） μm at 12mo in group 1 （P= 0.086）, and from 301.4 （212-483） μm to 300.3 （199-514） μm in group 2 （P=0.076）. The central retinal arteriolar equivalent （CRAE） changed from 128.8 ±11.2 μm at baseline to 134.5±8.4 μm at 12mo in group 1, and from 134.6±9.0 μm to 131.4±12.7 μm in group 2 （P =0.767）. The central retinal venular equivalent （CRVE） changed from 204.1±24.4 μm at baseline to 196.3±28.2 μm at 12mo in group 1, and from 205.8±16.3 μm to 194.8±18.2 μm in group 2 （P=0.019）. The mean central macular thickness （P〈0.05） and average best-corrected visual acuity （BCVA; P〈0.05） improved in both groups CONCLUSION： Changes in the SFChT are not statistically significant and not different according to the doses of bevacizumab. The CRAE did not show significant change, however, the CRVE showed significant decrease regardless of the dose.

Clinical implications of fatty pancreas:Correlations between fatty pancreas and metabolic syndrome

AIM:To investigate the clinical implications of lipid deposition in the pancreas(fatty pancreas). METhoDS:The subjects of this study were 293 patients who had undergone abdominal computed tomography(CT)and *** pancreas was diagnosed by sonographic findings and subdivided into mild,moderate,and severe fatty pancreas groups comparing to the retroperitoneal fat echogenicity. RESULTS:Fatty pancreas was associated with higher levels for visceral fat,waist circumference,aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alanine aminotransferase (ALT),total cholesterol,triglyceride,high density lipoprotein,free fatty acid,γ-GTP,insulin,and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (hoMA-IR)than the control group(PhoMAIR,visceral fat,triglyceride,and ALT also tended to increase with the degree of fat deposition in the pancreas on *** a multivariate logistic regression analysis,hoMA-IR,visceral fat,and ALT level were independently related to fatty pancreas after adjustment for age,body mass index,and lipid *** incidence of metabolic syndrome in the fatty pancreas group was significantly higher than in the control group,and the numbers of metabolic syndrome parameters were significantly higher in the fatty pancreas group(Psonographic fatty pancrease showed higher insulin resistance,visceral fat area,triglyceride, and ALT levels than normal *** pancreas also showed a strong correlation with metabolic syndrome.

Attribute reduction through the combined approach of Rough Sets(RS)and algebraic topology is an open research topic with significant potential for *** research works have introduced a strong relationship between RS and topology spaces for the attribute reduction ***,the mentioned recent methods followed a strategy to construct a new measure for attribute ***,the strategy for searching for the reduct is still to select each attribute and gradually add it to the ***,those methods tended to be inefficient for high-dimensional *** overcome these challenges,we use the separability property of Hausdorff topology to quickly identify distinguishable attributes,this approach significantly reduces the time for the attribute filtering stage of the *** addition,we propose the concept of Hausdorff topological homomorphism to construct candidate reducts,this method significantly reduces the number of candidate reducts for the wrapper stage of the *** are the two main stages that have the most effect on reducing computing time for the attribute reduction of the proposed algorithm,which we call the Cluster Filter Wrapper algorithm based on Hausdorff *** validation on the UCI Machine Learning Repository Data shows that the proposed method achieves efficiency in both the execution time and the size of the reduct.

Impacts of low-intensity prescribed fire on microbial and chemical soil properties in a Quercus frainetto forest

Prescribed fire is a common economical and effective forestry practice, and therefore it is important to understand the effects of fire on soil properties for better soil management. We investigated the impacts of low-intensity prescribed fire on the microbial and chemical properties of the top soil in a Hungarian oak(Quercus frainetto Ten.) forest. The research focused on microbial soil parameters(microbial soil respiration(RSM), soil microbial biomass carbon(Cmic) and metabolic quotient(qCO2) and chemical topsoil properties(soil acidity(pH),electrical conductivity(EC), carbon(C), nitrogen(N), C/N ratio and exchangeable cations). Mean annual comparisons show significant differences in four parameters(C/N ratio,soil pH, Cmic and qCO2) while monthly comparisons do not reveal any significant differences. Soil pH increased slightly in the burned plots and had a significantly positive correlation with exchangeable cations Mg, Ca, Mn and *** mean annual C/N ratio was significantly higher in the burned plots(28.5:1) than in the control plots(27.0:1). The mean annual Cmic(0.6 mg g-1) was significantly lower although qCO2(2.5 lg CO2–C mg Cmic h-1) was significantly higher, likely resulting from the microbial response to fire-induced environmental stress. Low-intensity prescribed fire caused very short-lived changes. The annual mean values of C/N ratio, pH, Cmic and qCO2showed significant differences.

Digital forensics aims to uncover evidence of cybercrimes within compromised *** cybercrimes are often perpetrated through the deployment of malware,which inevitably leaves discernible traces within the compromised *** analysts are tasked with extracting and subsequently analyzing data,termed as artifacts,from these systems to gather ***,forensic analysts must sift through extensive datasets to isolate pertinent ***,manually identifying suspicious traces among numerous artifacts is time-consuming and *** studies addressed such inefficiencies by integrating artificial intelligence(AI)technologies into digital *** the efforts in previous studies,artifacts were analyzed without considering the nature of the data within them and failed to prove their efficiency through specific *** this study,we propose a system to prioritize suspicious artifacts from compromised systems infected with malware to facilitate efficient digital *** system introduces a double-checking method that recognizes the nature of data within target artifacts and employs algorithms ideal for anomaly *** key ideas of this method are:(1)prioritize suspicious artifacts and filter remaining artifacts using autoencoder and(2)further prioritize suspicious artifacts and filter remaining artifacts using logarithmic *** evaluation demonstrates that our system can identify malicious artifacts with high accuracy and that its double-checking method is more efficient than alternative *** system can significantly reduce the time required for forensic analysis and serve as a reference for future studies.

The perovskite Cr-doped La0.6Sr0.4CrxFe1-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） oxides were synthesized via the citrate gel method. The perovskite forming of the Lao.6Sr0.4CrxFel-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） oxides were studied by ther- mogravimetric analysis （TG）, differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）, and X-ray diffraction （XRD）. Structural and chemical stability under H2-containing helium atmospheres of Lao.6Sro.4CrxFel-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） were investigated by TG and XRD. The sintering microstructures of the perovskite Lao.6Sr0.4Cr2Fel-xO3-δ （x--0.10, 0.20） ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, and the electrical conduc- tivities of both oxide ceramics were also measured up to 900℃. The results demonstrated that the chemical stability of the Co-free ***.4CrxFe1-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） oxides was significantly improved compared to the Co-containing Lao.6Sr0.4C00.2Fe0.8O3-δ and Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ oxides. The incorporation of Cr cations in the B-site of the pervoskite oxides resulted in the improved structural and chemical stability of the as-synthesized Lao.6Sr0.4CrxFe1-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） oxides.

Short-Term Effects of Experimental Warming and Precipitation Manipulation on Soil Microbial Biomass C and N, Community Substrate Utilization Patterns and Community Composition

Soil microorganisms are major drivers of soil carbon(C) cycling;however,the response of these microorganisms to climate change remains *** the present study,we investigated how 18 months of multifactor climate treatments(warmed air temperature by 3℃ and decreased or increased precipitation manipulation by 30%) affected soil microbial biomass C and nitrogen(N),community substrate utilization patterns,and community *** and increased precipitation significantly reduced microbial biomass C by 13.5% and 24.9% and microbial biomass N by 22.9% and 17.6% in unwarmed plots,respectively(P<0.01).Warming enhanced community substrate utilization by 89.8%,20.4%,and 141.4% in the natural,decreased,and increased precipitation plots,***,warming significantly enhanced the utilization of amine and carboxylic acid substrates among all precipitation manipulation *** with the natural air temperature with natural precipitation treatment,other treatments affected fungal community richness by -0.9% to 33.6% and reduced the relative abundance of the dominant bacterial and fungal groups by 0.5% to 6.8% and 4.3% to 10.7%,*** warming and/or precipitation manipulation treatments significantly altered Zygomycota abundance(P<0.05).Our results indicate that climate change drivers and their interactions may cause changes in soil microbial biomass C and N,community substrate utilization patterns,and community composition,particularly for the fungal community,and shifts in the microorganism community may further shape the ecosystems function.
