Tremor is a manifestation of a variety of human neurodegenerative diseases, notably Parkinson’s disease (Pd) and Essential Tremor (ET), both affecting millions worldwide. Pd is primarily caused by a progressive loss of dopamine neurons in the nigrostriatal system that leads to widespread motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor and postural instability. ET typically involves a tremor of the arms, hands or fingers. No definitive test or biomarker is yet available for Pd or ET, so the rate of misdiagnosis is relatively high. As tremor is a very common feature at the onset of both diseases, it is crucial to be able to characterize it. This is made possible using acce?lerometers to quantify the tremor amplitude and frequency. In this work we aim to find tasks involving upper limb movements that are suitable to modulate both types of tremor. Four tasks were tested, differing on whether the arms moved together or alternatingly and whether loads were added. Significant differences in tremor measures were found when patients were asked to perform simultaneous rapid arms movements with loads placed on their wrists. These results may allow the design of an efficient fMRI protocol for identifying the cortical circuits responsible for the modulation of tremor.

Furazolidone-based triple therapy for H pylori gastritis in children

AIM： To evaluate the furazolidone-based triple therapy in children with symptomatic H pylori gastdtis. METHOdS： A prospective and consecutive open trial was carried out. The study included 38 patients with upper digestive symptoms sufficiently severe to warrant endoscopic investigation. H pylori status was defined based both on histology and on positive ^13C-urea breath test. drug regimen was a seven-day course of omeprazole, clarithromycin and furazolidone （100 mg, 200 mg if over 30 kg） twice daily. Eradication of H pylori was assessed two months after treatment by histology and ^13C-urea breath test. Further clinical evaluation was performed 7 d, 2 and 6 mo after the treatment. RESULTS： Thirty-eight patients （24 females, 14 males） were included. Their age ranged from 4 to 17.8 （mean 10.9 ± 3.7） years. On intent-to-treat analysis （n = 38）, the eradication rate of H pylori was 73.7% （95% CI, 65.2%-82%） whereas in per-protocol analysis （n = 33） it was 84.8% （95% CI, 78.5%-91%）. All the patients with duodenal ulcer （n = 7） were successfully treated （100% vs 56.2% with antral nodularity）. Side effects were reported in 26 patients （68.4%）, mainly vomiting （14/26） and abdominal pain （n = 13）. Successfully treated dyspeptic patients showed improvement in 78.9% of H pylori-negative patients after six months and in 50% of Hpylori-positive patients after six months of treatment. CONCLUSION： Triple therapy with furazolidone achieves moderate efficacy in H pylori treatment. The eradication rate seems to be higher in patients with duodenal ulcer.

Objective: To investigate the antifungal activity of the fern species Lygodium venustum(L. venustum) and Pityrogramma calomelanos(P. calomelanos) against Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis ***: The microdilution method was used to evaluate the antifungal activity, as well as the modulating effects of ethanolic extracts of these plants in combination with fluconazole. The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC), minimum fungicide concentration and morphological changes were also ***: The extract obtained from L. venustum presented a MIC > 8 192 mg/m L, while the extract obtained from and P. calomelanos presented a MIC = 8 192 mg/m L, indicating that they present weak antifungal activity. However, combination of the extracts with Fluconazole potentiated the antifungal activity of this drug. At different experimental conditions, such as concentration of the extract and type of strain, the extracts inhibited hyphae and pseudohyphae formation, indicating that these fern species can affect the morphology of the ***: The extracts obtained from the fern species L. venustum and P. calomelanos dose not present significant antifungal activity. However, P. calomelanos potentiates the activity of fluconazole and both extracts inhibits the morphological changes in Candida species, indicating that they have potential pharmacological activity as modulators of fungal biology. Therefore, novel studies are required to characterize the interference of these extracts in the virulence and pathogenicity of Candida species as well as the potential of fern species to treat fungal infections.

AIM: To study the therapeutic effect of three tubeguides with electrical conductivity associated to mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) on neuro-muscular regeneration after ***: Rats with 10-mm gap nerve injury were tested using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), PVA-carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and MSCs, and PVA-polypyrrole(PPy). The regenerated nerves and tibialis anterior muscles were processed for stereological studies after 20 wk. The functional recovery was assessed serially for gait biomechanical analysis, by extensor postural thrust, sciatic functional index and static sciatic functionalindex(SSI), and by withdrawal reflex latency(WRL). In vitro studies included cytocompatibility, flow cytometry, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and karyotype analysis of the MSCs. Histopathology of lung, liver, kidneys, and regional lymph nodes ensured the biomaterials biocompatibility. RESULTS: SSI remained negative throughout and independently from treatment. differences between treted groups in the severity of changes in WRL existed, showing a faster regeneration for PVA-CNTs-MSCs(P d ankle muscles function during the push off phase of the gait cycle. In PVA-PPy and PVA-CNTs groups, there was a 25% and 42% increase of average fiber area and a 13% and 21% increase of the "minimal Feret's diameter" respectively. Stereological analysis disclosed a significantly(P d myelin thickness(M), ratio myelin thickness/axon diameter(M/d) and ratio axon diameter/fiber diameter(d/d; g-ratio) in PVA-CNT-MSCs group(P d that treatment with MSCs and PVA-CNTs tube-guides induced better nerve fiber regeneration.
