The Action Group called‘Standardized methods across Permafrost Landscapes:from Arctic Soils to Hydrosystems’(SPLASH)is a community-driven effort aiming to provide a suite of standardized field strategies for sampling mineral and organic components in soils,sediments,and water across permafrost *** unified approach will allow data from different landscape interfaces,field locations and seasons to be shared and compared,thus improving our understanding of the processes occurring during lateral transport in circumpolar Arctic watersheds.

AIM To establish consensual definitions of anoperineal lesions of Crohn's(APLOC) disease and assess interobserver agreement on their diagnosis between *** A database of digitally recorded pictures of APLOC was examined by a coordinating group who selected two series of 20 pictures illustrating the various aspects of APLOC. A reading group comprised: eight experts from the Société Nationale Fran?aise de Colo Proctologie group of study and research in proctology and one academic dermatologist. All members of the coordinating and reading groups participated in dedicated meetings. The coordinating group initially conducted a literature review to analyse verbatim descriptions used to evaluate APLOC. The study included two phases: establishment of consensual definitions using a formal consensus method and later assessment of interobserver agreement on the diagnosis of APLOC using photos of APLOC, a standardised questionnaire and Fleiss' s kappa test or descriptive *** Terms used in literature to evaluate visible APLOC did not include precise definitions or reference to definitions. Most of the expert reports on the first set of photos agreed with the main diagnosis but their verbatim reporting contained substantial variation. The definitions of ulceration(entity, depth, extension), anal skin tags(entity, inflammatory activity, ulcerated aspect), fistula(complexity, quality of drainage, inflammatory activity of external openings), perianal skin lesions(abscess, papules, edema, erythema) and anoperineal scars were validated. For fistulae, they decided to follow the American Gastroenterology Association's guidelines definitions. The diagnosis of ulceration(κ = 0.70), fistulae(κ = 0.75), inflammatory activity of external fistula openings(86.6% agreement), a b s c e s s e s( 8 4. 6 % a g r e e m e n t) a n d e r y t h e m a(100% agreement) achieved a substantial degree of interobserver reproducibility. Background: Patients with syncope or near syncope of unknown etiology represen t a great challenge to cardiologists. An initial symptomatic episode triggers a series of diagnostic analysis which remain unsatisfactory when negative. More in vasive tools such as electrophysiologic testing yield only partial answers to ri sk stratification while the complementary implantable holter diagnostics are not usually considered until a recurrent episode is documented. Objective: This stu dy targets predictors of significant cardiac rhythmic events in patients with a reported episode of syncope or near syncope presenting with negative diagnostics and electrophysiologic study results(EPS). A significant cardiac rhythmic event was defined as a combined end-point of(1) symptomatic AV block;(2) symptomatic conduction abnormalities requiring pacemaker therapy;(3) symptomatic sustained ventricular arrhythmia; and(4) sudden ***: All patients undergoing EPS after a first episode of syncope or presyncope between January 1997 and decembe r 2001 were included for analysis. The study population consisted of 329 pts(42. 6%women), 21 to 96 years old(mean 70±15 years) referred for an EP study for sy ncope or near syncope. Results: Of the 329 patients who underwent EPS, 305(92.7 %) had follow-up data. The population, mean age 70(±15 years) and composed of 42%women, presented with hypertension(51.5%), diabetes mellitus(14.4%), hype rcholesterolemia(30%), tobacco use(35%), a familial history of coronary heart disease(22%), history of stroke(4%), history of MI(12%), history of atrial fi brillation(10%), structural heart disease(17.4%), left ventricular ejection fr action 61(±11%) and ECG abnormalities(37%). AIM: To establish children born with gastroschisis(GS).METHOdS: We performed a retrospective study covering the period from January 2000 to december 2007. The following variables were analyzed for each child: Weight, sex, apgar, perforations, atresia, volvulus, bowel lenght, subjective description of perivisceritis, duration of parenteral nutrition, first nasogastric milk feeding, total milk feeding, necrotizing enterocolitis, average period of hospitalization and mortality. For statistical analysis, descriptive data are reported as mean ± standard deviation and median(range). The non parametric test of Mann-Whitney was used. The threshold for statistical significance was P d).RESULTS: Sixty-eight cases of GS were studied. We found nine cases of perforations, eight of volvulus, 12 of atresia and 49 children with subjective description of perivisceritis(72%). The mortality rate was 12%(eight deaths). Average duration of total parenteral nutrition was 56.7 d(8-950; median: 22), with five cases of necrotizing enterocolitis. Average length of hospitalization for 60 of our patients was 54.7 d(2-370;median: 25.5). The presence of intestinal atresia was the only factor correlated with prolonged parenteral nutrition, delayed total oral milk feeding and longer ***: In our study, intestinal atresia was our predictive factor of the severity of GS.

To test the hypothesis that the concentration of early follicular phase serum antim¨ullerianinullerian hormone (AMH) or m¨hibiting substance (MIS) is a useful marker of ovarian response and assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcome. Retrospective analysis of day 3 serum samples drawn before treatment. Private ART program. One hundred nine consecutive serum samples from women younger than 42 years of age who were undergoing ovulation induction for IVF. Follicular aspiration for IVF after ovarian stimulation with FSH in a downregulated cycle using GnRHa treatment. Correlations between day 3 serum AMH/MIS, E2, FSH, inhibin B levels, and IVF outcome (i.e., number of retrieved mature oocytes, number and quality of embryos obtained, ongoing clinical pregnancy rates). Multivariate regression analysis on categorical data was performed to describe a predictive model of clinical pregnancy outcome. Mean serum AMH/MIS value for clinical pregnancy (n = 38) was 2.4 ng/mL, in comparison to 1.1 ng/mL for those who did not become pregnant (n = 71). No differences were noted in mean values for day 3 FSH, inhibin B, or E2 between groups. Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that day 3 serum AMH/MIS had the greatest independent contribution in predicting pregnancy outcomes. These data demonstrate a strong association between day 3 serum AMH/MIS level and IVF outcome in women younger than 42 years of age. Higher AMH/MIS concentrations are associated with a greater number of mature oocytes, a greater number of embryos, and ultimately a higher clinical pregnancy rate. Furthermore, AMH/MIS may offer greater prognostic value than other currently available serum markers of ART outcome.

Background:The goal of this study is to determine the expression and localization of the cannabinoid receptor type 1(CB1R),the synthesizing enzyme N-acyl phosphatidyl-ethanolamine phospholipase d(NAPE-PLd),and the degradation enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase(FAAH)in the vervet monkey area V1 to better understand the mechanisms underlying the effects of eCB system modulation on cortical visual ***:Using Western blots and immunohistochemistry,we investigated the laminar and cellular expression patterns of CB1R,NAPE-PLd,and FAAH across the rostrocaudal axis of the vervet monkey(Chlorocebus sabaeus)primary visual ***:CB1R,NAPE-PLd,and FAAH were expressed in V1 throughout the rostrocaudal ***1R showed very low staining in layer(L)4,with higher expression in all other layers,especially L1,followed by L2 and ***-PLd and FAAH expression patterns were similar,but not quite as low in ***1R,NAPE-PLd,and FAAH were localized in vGlut2-positive cells,representing glutamatergic projection neurons,and in somatostatin(SST)-positive cells,a class of GABAergic ***:The low level of CB1R in L4 indicates less direct endocannabinoid modulation of V1 afferents from the dLGN,but that greater modulation may occur via the higher expression of CB1R in L2 and L3 on the way to the dorsal and ventral visual *** is further supported by the higher expression of NAPE-PLd and FAAH in these *** in vGlut2-positive and SST-positive cells represents a role at both glutamatergic and GABAergic *** data indicate that CB1R may influence the network of activity patterns in the visual streams after the visual information has reached V1,and thus may influence visual perception.

Background:The expression,localization,and function of the endocannabinoid system has been well characterized in recent years in the monkey retina and in the primary thalamic relay,the lateral geniculate nucleus(dLGN).Few data are available on cortical recipients’structures of the dLGN,namely the primary visual cortex(V1).The goal of this study is to characterize the expression and localization of the metabotropic cannabinoid receptor type 1(CB1R),the synthesizing enzyme N-acyl phosphatidyl-ethanolamine phospholipase d(NAPE-PLd),and the degradation enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase(FAAH)in the vervet monkey area ***:Using Western blots and immunohistochemistry,we investigated the expression patterns of CB1R,NAPE-PLd,and FAAH in the vervet monkey primary visual ***:CB1R,NAPE-PLd,and FAAH were expressed in the primary visual cortex throughout the rostro-caudal ***1R showed very low levels of staining in cortical layer 4,with higher expressions in all other cortical layers,especially layer ***-PLd and FAAH expressions were highest in layers 1,2 and 3,and lowest in layer ***:Interestingly enough,CB1R was very low in layer 4 of V1 in comparison to the other cortical *** visual information coming from the dLGN and entering layer 4Calpha(magno cells)and 4Cbeta(parvo cells)may be therefore modulated by the higher expression levels of CB1R in cortical layers 2 and 3 on the way to the dorsal and ventral visual *** is further supported by the higher expression of NAPE-PLd and FAAH in the outer cortical *** data indicate that CB1R system can influence the network of activity patterns in the visual stream after the visual information has reached area *** novel results provide insights for understanding the role of the endocannabinoids in the modulation of cortical visual inputs,and hence,visual perception.
