The brain and spinal cord can not replace neurons or supporting glia that are lost through trau- matic injury or disease. In pre-clinical studies, however, neural stem and progenitor cell transplants can promote functional recovery. Thus the central nervous system is repair competent but lacks endogenous stem cell resources. To make transplants clinically feasible, this field needs a source of histocompatible, ethically acceptable and non-tumorgenic cells. One strategy to generate pa- tient-specific replacement cells is to reprogram autologous cells such as fibroblasts into pluripotent stem cells which can then be differentiated into the required cell grafts. However, the utility of pluripotent cell derived grafts is limited since they can retain founder cells with intrinsic neoplastic potential. A recent extension of this technology directly reprograms fibroblasts into the final graft- able cells without an induced pluripotent stem cell intermediate, avoiding the pluripotent caveat. For both types of reprogramming the conversion efficiency is very low resulting in the need to amplify the cells in culture which can lead to chromosomal instability and neoplasia. Thus to make reprogramming biology clinically feasible, we must improve the efficiency. The ultimate source of replacement cells may reside in directly reprogramming accessible cells within the brain.

AIM： To evaluate the effect of various methods of small bowel preparation on the transit time and the quality of visualization of the entire small bowel mucosa. METHOdS： Ninety-five patients underwent capsule endoscopy （CE） by easily swallowing the capsule. They were divided into three study groups according to the preparation used： group A （n = 26） by polyethylene glycol （PEG） liter or with sodium phosphate （SP） 12 h prior to the CE study; group B （n = 29） by erythromycin 1 h prior to the CE study; and group C （n = 40） without any preparation. visualization ranged from good to satisfactory to poor. RESULTS： The gastric emptying time in the group prepared with erythromycin was shorter but without statistical significance and the small bowel transit time was unaffected. In elderly subjects prepared by PEG or SP, the gastric emptying time was significantly longer （163.7 rain, P = 0.05）. The transit times of the three sub-groups were not affected by gender or pathology. The grade of cleaning of the entire study group was 3.27±1.1. The erythromycin group presented significantly the worst quality of images （P = 0.05） compared to the other sub-groups. Age, gender, and pathology had no effect on the quality of the cleaning of the small bowel in the sub-groups. One （1.05%） case had no natural excretion. CONCLUSION： Erythromycin markedly reduces gastric emptying time, but has a negative effect on the quality of the image in the small bowel. The preparation of elderly subjects with PEG or SP has a negative effect on the small bowel transit time.

The alternations of sedimentogenic and asedimentogenic belts on the continental shelf and slope are distinctive features in the East Asia marginal *** sedimentogenesis characteristics areconditioned by the terrigenous material supply and their distribution patterns. Facial analysis of the marginal basins reveals a number of typical facial models which are comparablewith the geosynclinal and subplatform formations of the ancient basins. The paragenetical situation and simultaneous coexistence of these facial models in the modern margi-nal seas indicate that the ancient formation could be deposited in the same way,at the same time andeven in the same basin.

Background： Hematologic and biochemical reference intervals depend on many factors, including age. A review of the literature highlights the lack of reference intervals for 6-wk-old specific pathogen free （SPF） Hampshire-Yorkshire crossbred pigs. For translational research, 6-wk-old pigs represent an important animal model for both human juvenile colitis and diabetes mellitus type 2 given the similarities between the porcine and human gastrointestinal maturation process. The aim of this study was to determine reference intervals for hematological and biochemical parameters in healthy 6-wk-old crossbred pigs. Blood samples were collected from 66 clinically healthy Hampshire-Yorkshire pigs. The pigs were 6 wks old, represented both sexes, and were housed in a SPF facility. Automated hematological and biochemical analysis were performed using an AdvIA 120 Hematology System and a Cobas 6000 C501 Clinical Chemistry Analyzer. Results： Reference intervals were calculated using both parametric and nonparametric methods. The mean, median, minimum, and maximum values were calculated. Conclusion： As pigs are used more frequently as medical models of human disease, having reference intervals for commonly measured hematological and biochemical parameters in 6-wk-old pigs will be useful. The reference intervals calculated in this study will aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of both naturally occurring and experimentally induced disease. In comparison to published reference intervals for older non SPF pigs, notable differences in leukocyte populations, and in levels of sodium, potassium, glucose, protein, and alkaline phosphatase were observed.
